Breville asks for two jobs with similar lights: a cleaning cycle for coffee oil and a descale for scale. Work out which one first, then follow the steps for your model.

A Breville or Sage espresso machine asks for two different jobs with similar-looking lights: a cleaning cycle, which removes coffee oil from the group head, and a descale, which removes limescale from the inside of the machine. People confuse them constantly, run the wrong one and then wonder why the light stays on. The first thing to settle is which job your machine is asking for.

This guide separates the two. It covers the descale on the Barista Express, the Bambino Plus, the Precision Brewer and the Barista Express Impress, and the cleaning cycle on the Barista Express and Bambino Plus.

If the machine has a fault rather than a full scale tank, the section near the end tells you how to tell. For a repair, see [Breville coffee machine repair in Dubai](https://oneclickdubai.com/services/breville-coffee-machine-repair-dubai). For other makes, there is a [general guide to descaling a coffee machine](https://oneclickdubai.com/guides/how-to-descale-a-coffee-machine).

## How to descale a Breville machine: the short answer

1. **Decide which job it wants**: A descale and a cleaning cycle are different. The light pattern tells you which, and the table below shows the patterns we could confirm.
2. **Get the descaler**: Use the descaler Breville supplies or names for your model. Breville's page for the Barista Express Impress says to use the descaler packet that came with the machine.
3. **Remove the water filter**: If your tank has a filter, take it out before descaling.
4. **Empty the drip tray and fill the tank**: Mix the descaler with water as the pack says and pour it into the tank.
5. **Place a large container**: A 2 litre container under the portafilter and steam wand is used for the Bambino Plus. It must be large enough for everything that comes out.
6. **Enter descale mode**: The button sequence depends on the model. The sequences we could confirm are below.
7. **Run the solution through**: Run it through the coffee outlet, the steam wand and the hot water outlet, as your model requires.
8. **Rinse**: Rinse the tank, refill it with fresh water to MAX and repeat the process to flush the solution.
9. **Exit and test**: Return the machine to standby and make a test shot.

The full steps, with the lights, are further down.

## Descale or clean? The two jobs are not the same

| | Cleaning cycle | Descale |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it removes | Coffee oils from the group head | Mineral scale inside the machine |
| What it uses | A cleaning tablet and a cleaning disc in the portafilter | A descaling solution in the water tank |
| How long | About 5 minutes on the Barista Express, per a retailer guide | Longer, with several rinses |
| When | After a number of shots. The Bambino Plus alerts after 200 extractions | When the machine's descale light or message comes on |
| What it fixes | Bitter or off taste from old coffee oil | Slow flow, cool shots, weak steam, scale |
| Where the product goes | On the disc in the portafilter basket | In the water tank |

Running a cleaning cycle does not remove scale, and descaling does not clean the group head. A machine that gets both on time rarely needs a repair for either.

The words people type include clean me, clean descale and clean sage barista. They are usually asking about the cleaning cycle. The sections below cover both.

## Breville or Sage: the same machine, two names

Breville is the name the company uses in North America and Australia. Sage is the name it uses in the UK and parts of Europe. In Dubai you may see either badge on the same machine, depending on where it was bought. The machines are the same designs under two badges, so a Sage Barista Express and a Breville Barista Express are the same family. Searches for a Sage descaler are searches for Breville's descaler.

Model codes help. Breville models are named with a code such as BES870 or BES876 on the base of the machine or the back. Use the code to find the right instruction book, because the button sequences differ between models, and between a compact machine like the Bambino and a dual-boiler machine like the Oracle.

## Which Breville do you have?

| Model family | What it is | What we could confirm |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Barista Express (BES870 family) | Espresso machine with a built-in grinder, buttons and dials for steam and hot water | Descale sequence (published guide), cleaning cycle (retailer guide) |
| Barista Express Impress | Newer machine in the Barista Express family with a maintenance light | Breville's page: maintenance light means descale; use the packet supplied. The page has a video, not text steps |
| Bambino and Bambino Plus | Compact machine with 1 CUP, 2 CUP and STEAM buttons | Cleaning cycle and descale alert (Breville instruction book), descale sequence (published guide) |
| Precision Brewer | A filter coffee maker | Descale cycle (published guide) |
| Oracle and other dual-boiler models | Larger machines with two boilers | Not confirmed. Use your instruction book |
| One-Touch and others | Different designs | Use your instruction book |

We have included steps only for the models we could confirm. For the others, the model code leads you to the right book, or you can send us the code and we will find the steps.

## When to descale: the signals

| Model | Signal | What it means |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Barista Express | The CLEAN/DESCALE light comes on | A cleaning cycle or a descale is due. Check your manual for which |
| Barista Express Impress | The maintenance light turns on | Breville says it is time to perform a descale |
| Bambino Plus | The 1 CUP, STEAM and 2 CUP buttons flash alternately for 15 seconds | Descale due. Pressing a button cancels the alert and returns to ready mode |
| Bambino Plus | The 1 CUP and 2 CUP buttons flash alternately | Cleaning cycle due after 200 extractions. Press STEAM to skip it, and the alert returns next time you switch on |
| Precision Brewer | DESCALE flashes on the screen | Descale due |
| Any model | Slow flow, cooler shots, weak steam, white flakes | Scale is building. Descale even if no light has come on |

A light that is cancelled is not a job that is done. Cancelling the alert silences it for now and the scale is still there. Run the programme.

## What you need

- The descaler Breville names for your model. Breville's Barista Express Impress page says to use the packet supplied with the machine.
- A published guide describes a Breville descaling powder for the Barista Express, with one sachet dissolved in one litre of water. Check your own pack for the amount.
- A container of 2 litres for the Bambino Plus steps. Choose one big enough for all the liquid the model delivers.
- Fresh water for the tank and for the rinses.
- The cleaning tablets and disc, if you are running the cleaning cycle.
- A cloth and a tray to protect the worktop, since descaler can damage surfaces.
- The instruction book, or its web page.

Set aside about 45 minutes for a compact home machine. The descale itself takes less, but the rinses and the washing of parts add up.

## Before you start

1. **Switch off and let the machine cool**: A hot machine should cool before you open it. The Bambino Plus steps ask for the machine to cool completely.
2. **Remove the portafilter**: Take out the basket if the model's steps say so.
3. **Empty the drip tray**: Put it back.
4. **Remove the water filter**: If one is fitted.
5. **Fill the tank**: With the descaling solution to the line your model states.
6. **Place a large container**: Under the portafilter outlet and the steam wand.
7. **Check the dials**: On the Barista Express, the steam and hot water dials are used in the descale. Know where STANDBY is on each dial.

Do not remove or empty the tank during a Bambino Plus descale. The Breville instruction book says never to remove or completely empty the water tank during descaling.

## Procedure A: Barista Express

These steps are from a published guide to the Barista Express. Check them against the instruction book for your exact code.

1. **Remove the water filter and fill the tank**: Fill it with the diluted solution.
2. **Enter descale mode**: Hold the 2-CUP button, then hold POWER at the same time. Wait for the POWER, 1-CUP, CLEAN/DESCALE and HOT WATER/STEAM lights to stay on solid.
3. **Descale the coffee outlet**: Press 1-CUP.
4. **Descale the steam and hot water outlets**: Turn the steam dial to the right, then the hot water dial to the left. Turn a dial back to STANDBY to stop it.
5. **Repeat**: About half a litre will remain in the tank. Repeat the steps to empty it.
6. **Rinse**: Rinse the tank, refill it with fresh water to the maximum line, and repeat all the steps to flush the solution.
7. **Exit**: Press POWER to leave descale mode. The LEDs turn off when you are done.

If your machine's lights or button names differ from these, you have a different version. Use the instruction book.

## Procedure B: Bambino and Bambino Plus

These steps are from a published guide. The Breville instruction book confirms the alert and the rule about the tank.

1. **Prepare**: Empty and reinsert the drip tray. Fill the tank to the DESCALE line and add the descaling agent.
2. **Place the container**: A 2 litre container under the portafilter outlet and the steam wand.
3. **Switch off and cool**: Turn the machine off by pressing 1 CUP and STEAM together, and let it cool completely.
4. **Enter descale mode**: Hold 1 CUP and STEAM together for 5 seconds.
5. **Start**: Press 1 CUP or STEAM. The mode pauses when the solution runs out.
6. **Refill for the rinse**: Fill the tank to the MAX line with fresh water, empty the waste container, and reinstall both parts.
7. **Resume**: Press either button. When the cycle ends, the machine returns to standby.
8. **Clean up**: Empty the waste container, and rinse and dry the drip tray and the water tank.

The pause in step 5 is part of the programme. The machine waits for you to refill the tank, so do not read it as a fault.

## Procedure C: Precision Brewer

The Precision Brewer is a filter machine, so the process resembles the filter-machine method in our [general descaling guide](https://oneclickdubai.com/guides/how-to-descale-a-coffee-machine).

1. **Prepare the solution**: Empty the tank and pour in the prepared solution.
2. **Position the basket and carafe**: Place the basket and an empty carafe under the drip stop outlet, with the carafe lid locked.
3. **Start the cycle**: Hold SELECT for 3 seconds. The cycle takes about 15 minutes.
4. **Rinse**: Fill the tank with fresh water and run two full brew cycles. Discard the carafe water each time and rinse the carafe between cycles.

Machines with a descale warning flash DESCALE on the screen. Finish the rinse before you brew coffee.

## Procedure D: Barista Express Impress and other models

Breville's own page for the Barista Express Impress says that when the maintenance light is on, it is time to perform a descale cycle, and to use the descaler packet that came with the machine. The page shows the process in a video that runs from emptying the drip tray and the tank to a final clear-water rinse. It does not list the steps as text, and we are not going to guess a button sequence.

- Use the video on Breville's page or the instruction book for your machine.
- Use the descaler packet supplied.
- Empty the drip tray and the tank first, and finish with a clear-water rinse.
- If you cannot find the instruction book, message us the model code from the base of the machine and we will tell you the steps.
- For Oracle and other dual-boiler models, the sequence differs from the machines above, so use the book for your model.

## The cleaning cycle

The cleaning cycle is not a descale, but it is half of what the CLEAN/DESCALE and Clean Me searches are about. The two cycles below come from Breville's Bambino Plus instruction book and a retailer guide to the Barista Express.

### Bambino Plus

1. **Know when**: The machine alerts after 200 extractions since the last cleaning cycle, with the 1 CUP and 2 CUP buttons flashing alternately.
2. **Load the portafilter**: Put the provided cleaning disc in the filter basket, put a cleaning tablet on the disc, and lock the portafilter into the group head.
3. **Prepare the machine**: Empty the drip tray and return it. Place a 2 litre container under the portafilter and steam wand. Fill the tank to the MAX line.
4. **Enter cleaning mode**: Press and hold 1 CUP and 2 CUP together for 5 seconds.
5. **Start**: Press 1 CUP or 2 CUP. The lights flash alternately while the cycle runs.
6. **Finish**: When the cycle ends, the machine returns to ready mode. Remove and rinse the portafilter, the disc, the drip tray and the container.

### Barista Express

1. **Know when**: The CLEAN/DESCALE light flashes to say a cleaning cycle is due.
2. **Load the portafilter**: Put the one-cup filter basket in the portafilter, put the cleaning disc in it, put a cleaning tablet in the centre of the disc, and lock the portafilter into the group head.
3. **Prepare**: Fill the tank to the max line with cold water, empty the drip tray and switch the machine off.
4. **Start**: Press the one-cup and two-cup buttons together, then press POWER and hold all three for 10 seconds. The cycle runs for about five minutes.
5. **Finish**: The machine beeps twice. Remove the portafilter and check the tablet has dissolved. If it has not, repeat.

The Barista Express steps come from a retailer's guide rather than Breville, so check your instruction book if your model is a later one.

## Rinsing: do it twice

- Rinse the tank under running water between the solution and the fresh water.
- Fill the tank to the maximum line with fresh water and run the full procedure again, as the Barista Express steps state.
- Run water through the coffee outlet, the steam wand and the hot water outlet. Each carries solution.
- Smell the water. Any trace of descaler means another rinse.
- Make one shot with no coffee, then a normal shot, and taste it.
- Wipe the shower screen and the area round the group head, where drips dry into a film.

A published guide stresses rinsing for every model it covers. Descaler left in the machine tastes sour, and it is not meant to be drunk.

## If the light will not turn off

| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Light still on after the descale | The cycle was interrupted, or you skipped the rinse | Run the programme again to the end |
| Light still on after the cleaning cycle | The tablet did not dissolve, or the cycle stopped | Repeat the cleaning cycle with a fresh tablet |
| Light flashes straight after the machine is switched on | The alert returns until the job is done | Run the cycle the alert asks for |
| Machine stops partway through the descale | Tank empty or the program is waiting for you | Refill as the steps say and press the button to resume |
| Different lights from this guide | You have a different model | Use the instruction book for your code |
| Light stays on after a full descale and rinse | A sensor, the control board or a flow fault | Book a visit |

Resetting a light without doing the job does not help. If the machine insists, it has a reason, and the reason is usually scale or oil.

## Mistakes that cost money

| Mistake | Why it matters |
| --- | --- |
| Running the cleaning cycle and expecting it to descale | They are different jobs. Scale stays in the machine |
| Cancelling the alert and carrying on | The scale keeps building |
| Emptying or removing the tank during a Bambino Plus descale | Breville's instruction book says never to do this |
| Starting the descale with a hot machine | The Bambino Plus steps ask you to let it cool first |
| Leaving the water filter in | Published steps tell you to remove it first |
| Using a product that is not made for your machine | Check the packet supplied, or the instruction book |
| Mixing descalers or using bleach | It can harm the machine and is not a descaler |
| Skipping the second rinse | Leaves a sour taste and residue |
| Guessing the button combination | Different models use different sequences, so use the book |

The biggest single mistake is mixing up the two jobs. Look at the light, find your model in the table, and run the job that matches.

## Routine care between jobs

| How often | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| After every shot | Knock out the puck, rinse the portafilter and wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth. Purge the wand |
| Daily | Empty the drip tray, refill the tank with fresh water and wipe the group head |
| Weekly | Soak the baskets and rinse the portafilter. Clean the steam tip and the hot water outlet |
| Monthly | Remove the shower screen and rinse it. Check the group gasket |
| On the alert | Run the cleaning cycle (oil) or the descale (scale) |
| Yearly | Replace the group gasket and shower screen. Check the water filter if your model has one |

Wipe the steam wand straight after milk. Dried milk blocks the holes faster than scale does and looks like a weak steam fault.

## A 45-minute plan, start to finish

| Minutes | What you do | What you should see |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 0 to 5 | Switch off, let the machine cool, empty the drip tray, remove the water filter, set out the container | A cool machine and an empty tray |
| 5 to 10 | Mix the descaler, fill the tank to the line for your model | A full tank, no spills |
| 10 to 15 | Enter descale mode with your model's sequence | The lights change as the model describes |
| 15 to 30 | Run the solution through each outlet your model asks for. Refill or restart when it pauses | Warm, slightly sharp-smelling liquid in the container |
| 30 to 40 | Empty the container, rinse the tank, fill with fresh water, repeat the process | Water with less smell each time |
| 40 to 45 | Exit descale mode, wash the parts, dry the drip tray, make a test shot | A normal shot with no sharp taste |

The times are our own estimate for a compact home machine. Your model's book gives the real figures. If the lights do not match the second row's description, stop and check the book before going on.

## Cleaning disc, cleaning tablet and descaler: what goes where

| Item | What it is for | Where it goes | When |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cleaning disc | A blind disc that makes the portafilter hold water for the cleaning cycle | Inside the filter basket, in the portafilter | Every cleaning cycle |
| Cleaning tablet | A tablet that dissolves and removes coffee oil | On the disc | Every cleaning cycle |
| Descaler | Dissolves limescale | In the water tank, diluted as the pack says | Every descale |
| Water filter | Reduces minerals in the tank water | In the tank, removed during descaling | Replaced on the schedule in the book |
| Shower screen and gasket | Spread water and seal the portafilter | Inside the group head | Cleaned monthly, replaced yearly |

Never put a cleaning tablet in the tank or descaler on the disc. They are different products for different parts of the machine.

## Baskets, gaskets and the parts that wear around a Breville

Descaling cures scale. The parts below cure the faults people mistake for scale.

| Symptom | Likely part | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Water leaks around the group while brewing | Group gasket hardened | Replace the gasket and clean the shower screen |
| Uneven flow from the portafilter | Clogged shower screen or basket | Clean or replace |
| Shot runs fast whatever the grind | Worn basket, stale beans or low pump pressure | Test the beans and basket, then book a visit |
| Portafilter locks further round than before | Gasket flattened | Replace the gasket |
| Steam weak but descale done | Blocked steam tip | Soak and clear the holes |
| Drips under the machine | Hose, seal or pump | Switch off and book a visit |

Our [espresso machine repair](https://oneclickdubai.com/services/espresso-machine-repair-dubai) page explains each of these in more depth, and the [Breville repair page](https://oneclickdubai.com/services/breville-coffee-machine-repair-dubai) covers the Barista Express, Bambino and Oracle.

## How often, for your kitchen

| How you use it | Cleaning cycle | Descale |
| --- | --- | --- |
| One or two coffees a day | When the alert asks | When the light or message asks |
| Four to six drinks a day | More often, since the shot count rises faster | When the light asks, and check the filter |
| An office machine | Check the alert every week | Do not wait for the light. Log each descale |
| Machine unused for weeks | Before first use | Before first use |

The alerts count shots, so a busy machine reaches them sooner. A calendar reminder is a good backup, because alerts can be cancelled by accident.

## Breville descaler or a third-party product?

Breville names its own descaler, and the Barista Express Impress page tells owners to use the packet supplied with the machine. A published guide also lists a compatible descaling solution sold for the Barista Express, Bambino Plus and other models. Here is how to think about the choice.

| Situation | Our advice |
| --- | --- |
| Machine under warranty | Use the packet or product Breville names |
| Out of warranty, packet to hand | Use the packet. It is matched to the machine |
| Out of warranty, packet used up | A descaler made for espresso machines that states it suits your type. Read the pack for the dose |
| Only vinegar in the house | Wait and buy a proper descaler. Several makers warn against vinegar and it leaves a smell |
| A product made for kettles | Check the label for coffee machines before you use it |

Whatever you use, dilute it as the pack says and rinse it out fully. More descaler does not give a better result, and a stronger mix is more likely to harm seals.

## After the descale: the first drinks

1. **Run plain water through each outlet**: Coffee outlet, steam wand and hot water outlet, with a cup or jug under each.
2. **Smell and taste the water**: It should be clean. A sharp smell means more rinsing.
3. **Pull a shot without coffee**: Then lock in a basket of coffee and pull a real shot.
4. **Check the time and the flow**: A shot that flows evenly in a normal time says the scale is gone.
5. **Test the steam**: Open the wand for a few seconds. The steam should be strong and dry.
6. **Note the date**: Write it on a label or in your phone.

If the shot is sour, the temperature is wrong, or the steam is weak after a good descale, the cause is something else, and the technician section covers it.

## Shutting a Breville down for a long absence

- Run the cleaning cycle and a descale if one is due, so scale does not sit in the machine.
- Empty the tank and the drip tray, and leave the tank lid off to dry.
- Empty the bean hopper if you have a grinder model, because oils go stale.
- Unplug the machine.
- On your return, fill the tank with fresh water, run water through each outlet and make a test shot before using it.

Water left standing in the tank and lines for weeks can leave a smell and a slow, scaled machine on your return, so empty it first.

## A Breville in an office or a shared kitchen

- Name one person to watch the alerts and run the jobs. A shared machine is descaled late because everyone assumes someone else will.
- Stick a label on the side with the model code, the date of the last descale and the date of the last cleaning cycle.
- Keep a spare pack of descaler and cleaning tablets in a drawer, so the machine never waits for a delivery.
- Do not cancel the alert for someone else. Tell the owner.
- Show colleagues how to knock out the puck, purge the steam wand and wipe the group, which stops most blockages.
- Book a service for a machine with heavy daily use, rather than waiting for a fault.

We service Breville machines in offices across Dubai and can set up regular visits with a record sheet left beside the machine.

## When descaling is not the answer: call a technician

A scaled Breville improves after a descale. If it does not, the fault is a part.

| After a good descale and cleaning cycle | What it means | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Flow and temperature back to normal | It was scale or oil | Keep to the routine |
| Still slow or no flow | Pump, solenoid or a blocked path | Book a visit |
| Shots still cool or sour | Heater, thermostat or sensor | Book a visit |
| Steam still weak | Blocked tip, steam valve or heater | Clean the tip, then book a visit |
| Leaks at the group or beneath the machine | Gasket, seal, hose or pump | Switch off and book a visit |
| Grinder noise or no grind (Barista Express) | Burrs, motor or a jam | Switch off and book a visit |
| Alert returns straight away | A sensor or control fault | Send a photo of the lights |
| Machine under warranty | Breville may repair it | Contact the dealer or Breville first |

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I descale a Breville espresso machine?

Use the descaler for your model, remove the water filter, fill the tank with the solution, enter descale mode, run it through the coffee, steam and hot water outlets, then rinse with fresh water. The button sequence depends on the model.

### What does the clean me light on a Breville mean?

It asks for the cleaning cycle that removes coffee oil from the group head. It is not a descale. Check your instruction book for your model.

### What is the difference between Breville and Sage?

They are the same machines sold under two names. Sage is used in the UK and parts of Europe.

### How do I descale a Barista Express?

Hold the 2-CUP button and POWER together, wait for the lights to stay solid, press 1-CUP, then turn the steam and hot water dials as the published steps describe. Repeat to empty the tank, then rinse.

### How do I descale a Bambino Plus?

Fill the tank to the DESCALE line with the agent, place a 2 litre container under the outlets, switch off and cool, hold 1 CUP and STEAM for 5 seconds, then press 1 CUP or STEAM to start.

### How often should I run the cleaning cycle?

The Bambino Plus alerts after 200 extractions. The Barista Express flashes its CLEAN/DESCALE light when a cleaning cycle is due.

### Can I stop a descale halfway?

Do not remove or empty the tank on the Bambino Plus. Let the programme finish or pause as designed.

### What descaler should I use?

Breville's page says to use the packet supplied with the machine. Otherwise use a descaler named for your model, and never mix products.

### Can I use vinegar?

We do not recommend it. Check your instruction book, because makers differ, and some warn against it.

### Do I need to descale if I use filtered water?

Yes, though less often. Filtering reduces scale but does not remove all minerals.

### Why is my Breville still flashing after descaling?

The cycle was interrupted or a rinse was skipped. Run it again to the end. If it persists after a full descale, book a visit.

### What is the cleaning disc for?

It blocks the basket so the cleaning cycle can hold water and tablet solution in the portafilter. Use it only in the cleaning cycle.

### Can I run the cleaning cycle and the descale on the same day?

Yes, as long as you finish one and rinse before starting the other. Do not mix the products.

### My Barista Express grinds but the shots are weak. Is it scale?

Not necessarily. Check the beans, the grind, the basket and the gasket first. Scale slows flow and cools the shot, but weak shots are often a worn basket or a coarse grind.

### Do I descale the grinder?

No. Descaler goes through the water path. Clean the grinder with a brush and a dry cloth, in the way your instruction book describes.

### How do I stop the Bambino Plus descale alert?

Pressing any of the flashing buttons cancels the alert and returns the machine to ready mode. It does not do the job, so descale soon.

### Is Sage the same as Breville?

Yes. Sage is the name used in the UK and parts of Europe, and the machines are the same designs.

### Who repairs Breville machines in Dubai?

One Click Dubai sends a technician the same day. Message us on WhatsApp at +971 55 209 9785. If your machine is under warranty, contact the dealer or Breville first.
