Philips machines descale by buttons or by display menu. Find your series, use the Philips descaler and rinse to the Calc / Clean level.

Philips fully automatic machines (the 2200, 3200, 4300, 5400 and the LatteGo models) all descale on the same principle: you fill the tank with descaler and water, the machine pumps the solution through in stages, and a rinse with fresh water finishes the job. What differs is how you start it. The 2200 and 3200 use a Calc / Clean button and lights. The 3100 and the higher series use the display menu.

This guide covers both routes. For the display route it follows the Philips 3100-series manual step by step. For the light-based route and the 4300 and 5400 sequence it uses published walk-throughs from a large European retailer, and we label those as the retailer's. It also covers the AquaClean filter rules, what to do after a power cut mid-cycle, how often to descale, what the messages mean and when the problem is not scale.

Philips publishes a different sequence for each series, and its own support page lists separate instructions for the 2300 and 3300, the 4300 to 5500, the 0800 to 3200, the 5000, the 4000 and 3100, the 3000 and 2100 series. If your model is not named here, open the section for your series on Philips' site or in your manual and use this guide for the background. If the machine is faulty rather than due for a descale, see [coffee machine repair in Dubai](https://oneclickdubai.com/services/coffee-machine-repair-dubai). For other makes there is a [general guide to descaling a coffee machine](https://oneclickdubai.com/guides/how-to-descale-a-coffee-machine).

## How to descale a Philips machine: the short answer

1. **Wait for the prompt**: Philips says to descale when the Calc / Clean light is steady or the display asks for it. On the 3100 the display reads START CALC CLEAN.
2. **Use the Philips descaler**: Philips' support page says to use only its own descaling solution, named CA6700.
3. **Take out the AquaClean filter**: The sources says the filter comes out before descaling.
4. **Empty and refit the trays**: Empty, rinse and replace the drip tray and the grounds container. Remove the LatteGo or the classic milk frother if one is fitted.
5. **Fill the tank**: Pour in the descaler, then add fresh water up to the Calc / Clean level.
6. **Place a 1.5 litre container**: Under the coffee outlet. The 2200 and 3200 walk-through puts it under the hot water and coffee outlet.
7. **Start the programme**: Hold Calc / Clean for 3 seconds then press Start / Stop on the 2200 and 3200, or press OK at START CALC CLEAN on the 3100.
8. **Let it finish and do not interrupt**: Philips warns against interrupting. It can take up to 30 minutes.
9. **Rinse with fresh water**: Refill to the Calc / Clean level and run the rinse, about 3 minutes.
10. **Refit a new AquaClean filter**: Only after the rinse, then confirm it in the menu or with the AquaClean button.

The sections below set out each route in full, with the volumes, timings and warnings each source gives.

## Which Philips do you have?

| Series | How you start descaling | Source we used |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2200 and 3200 | Calc / Clean button and lights, then Start / Stop | Retailer walk-through |
| 3100 (EP3519, EP3510) | Display message START CALC CLEAN, or MENU then DESCALING | Philips manual |
| 4300 and 5400 (with LatteGo) | Descale programme in the clean menu on the display | Retailer walk-through |
| Other series (2300, 3300, 5000, 3000, 2100 and others) | Differs. Philips publishes a section for each | Philips support page lists them. |

The model number is on the rating plate and in the box of the manual. It begins EP followed by four digits, for example EP3226 or EP4349. The manual and the box give the series name. Check it before you follow any sequence, because a light-based machine and a display machine do not start the same way.

## The descaler: what Philips names, and what to check

Philips' own support page for descaling says to use only the Philips descaler, Descaling solution CA6700. The 3100 manual says the same in different words: use only Philips or Saeco descaling solution, because other products may damage the machine and leave residues in the water.

| Point | What the sources say |
| --- | --- |
| Which product | Philips descaling solution CA6700, 250 ml bottle |
| Dose | The 3100 manual gives no dose and says to pour the solution into the tank and fill with fresh water to the Calc / Clean level. The retailer walk-through for the 2200 and 3200 says to pour in one whole bottle |
| Cycles per bottle | A Philips product page describes CA6700 as one descaling cycle |
| Other products | The manual says they may damage the machine and leave residues in the water |
| Availability | A Philips regional product page marks CA6700 as discontinued. Check which product your own manual names today |

The last row matters. Philips changes part numbers, and regional pages do not always agree. If your manual names a different descaler, use the one your manual names. If you cannot find the Philips product locally, ask a dealer which Philips descaler fits your model rather than reaching for a general liquid.

Vinegar, citric acid from the kitchen and tablets are not the Philips descaler. The manual warns that other products may damage the machine, so we do not recommend them, and the warranty position for damage caused by an unapproved product is a question for Philips.

## What you need

- Philips descaling solution for your model, one 250 ml bottle for the 2200 and 3200 walk-through.
- A container of at least 1.5 litres. The 3100 manual specifies 1.5 l under the spout.
- Fresh water for the mixture and for the rinse.
- A new AquaClean filter if you use one, ready to fit after the rinse.
- A cloth, because water and descaler drip from the outlets.
- Your manual or its page open, to match the buttons and messages.
- About 35 to 45 minutes. The 3100 manual gives 30 minutes in total: about 20 for the descaling phase and 3 for the rinse, with the back cover showing 23 minutes. Philips' support page says it can take up to 30 minutes.

Do not start in a hurry. An interrupted descale leaves solution in the lines, and the 3100 manual says an incomplete cycle needs repeating as soon as possible.

## Descaling a Philips 2200 or 3200

This is the retailer's walk-through for the 2200 and 3200, the light-based machines. The retailer's article says to start when the Calc / Clean light flashes. Philips' own page says the light being on steadily, or a prompt on the display, means descaling is due. Treat either as the signal.

### Preparation

1. **Remove the milk system and the trays**: Take off the LatteGo, and take out the drip tray and the grounds container. Empty and rinse them and put them back.
2. **Empty the tank**: Pour away any water and take out the AquaClean filter.
3. **Add the descaler**: Pour in one whole bottle of the Philips descaler.
4. **Top up with fresh water**: Fill to the Calc / Clean mark on the tank and put it back.
5. **Place the container**: At least 1.5 litres, under the hot water and coffee outlet.

### Descaling

1. **Enter the programme**: Press and hold the Calc / Clean icon for 3 seconds.
2. **Start**: Press Start / Stop.
3. **Wait**: The machine runs until the water tank empty light comes on. The walk-through gives no run time, so allow the half hour Philips mentions.
4. **Empty and rinse**: Empty the drip tray and rinse the water tank.
5. **Refill**: Fill the tank with fresh water to the Calc / Clean mark and put it back.

### Rinsing

1. **Container back under the outlet**: Empty it first.
2. **Start the rinse**: Press Start / Stop.
3. **Wait**: The rinse is finished when the machine stops running water.
4. **Ready**: The machine is ready when the drink icons stay lit continuously.

## Descaling a Philips 3100 (EP3519, EP3510) from the display

The Philips 3100-series manual is the fullest official source. It describes the whole procedure through the display.

1. **Trays**: Remove, empty, clean and replace the drip tray and the coffee grounds container.
2. **Milk frother**: Remove the classic milk frother from the steam wand.
3. **Container**: Place a 1.5 litre container under the spout.
4. **Start**: When START CALC CLEAN shows, press OK. The display reminds you to remove the AquaClean filter.
5. **Fill the tank**: Pour in the descaling solution, fill with fresh water to the Calc / Clean level, reinsert the tank and press OK.
6. **First phase**: It runs for about 20 minutes, dispensing at intervals. Let the machine dispense until the tank is empty.
7. **Rinse the tank**: Remove it, rinse it, fill it with fresh water to the Calc / Clean level and reinsert it.
8. **Rinse phase**: Empty the container, put it back under the spout and press OK. The 3-minute rinse begins. If the tank was not filled to the Calc / Clean level, another rinse may be needed.
9. **Finish**: When the machine stops dispensing and a tick appears, press OK to exit. The machine heats up and rinses itself.
10. **Empty the container**: Remove and empty it.
11. **Brew group**: Clean the brew group using the weekly brew group cleaning cycle that the manual describes.
12. **Filter and frother**: Fit a new AquaClean filter in the tank and put the classic milk frother back.

To start the programme later, press MENU, select MENU again, scroll to DESCALING and press OK.

### Warnings from the manual

- Do not drink the descaling solution or the water dispensed during descaling.
- Do not remove the brew group during descaling. The manual says you cannot while it runs.
- Empty the drip tray first, because an overflow can leave water under the machine.
- If the machine is not descaled when it asks, it will eventually stop working properly, and the manual says repairs are then not covered by the warranty.

## Descaling a Philips 4300 or 5400 (with LatteGo)

This is the retailer's walk-through for the EP4349 and EP5447. It describes the display route in broad strokes, with about 30 minutes for descaling and about 3 minutes for the rinse.

1. **Open the programme**: Choose the descale programme from the clean menu and confirm.
2. **Remove the milk system**: Take off the LatteGo if it is fitted.
3. **Trays**: Empty, rinse and replace the drip tray and the coffee grounds tray.
4. **Tank**: Empty it and remove the used AquaClean filter.
5. **Descaler**: Put the descaler in the tank and fill with water to the Calc / Clean mark. Put the tank back. The retailer gives no dose, so follow the pack.
6. **Container**: At least 1.5 litres, under the coffee and water outlets.
7. **Start**: Confirm and wait until the machine stops dispensing water.
8. **Prompt to add water**: When the display asks for water, remove the container and the tank. Rinse the tank, refill it with fresh water to the Calc / Clean mark, put it back, empty the container, place it back and confirm.
9. **Rinse**: The rinse cycle runs for about 3 minutes and stops by itself.
10. **Finish**: Empty the container. Fit a new AquaClean filter. Fill the tank with fresh water to Max and put it back.

The prompts on screen are the authority on this series. If the display and this list disagree, follow the display.

## The AquaClean filter and descaling

The AquaClean filter changes when and how you descale, and The sources treats it the same way.

- Take the used filter out before you descale. The 3100 display reminds you to.
- Fit the new filter only after the rinse, before the machine is used again.
- The machine must be free of limescale before you use an AquaClean filter. The 3100 manual says that if you skipped the filter at first installation, you should descale before activating it.
- Confirm the filter in the menu each time you replace it. On the 2200 and 3200 you hold the AquaClean icon for 3 seconds, press Start / Stop and wait for the light to turn blue.
- After 8 filters the 3100 display reads DESCALE BEFORE ACTIVATING FILTER, and the filter counter resets to 0/8 after descaling.
- A series of 8 filters allows up to 5000 cups without descaling, according to the same manual.

### Preparing a new filter (2200 and 3200 walk-through)

1. **Shake the filter**: For 5 seconds.
2. **Soak it**: Upside down in cold water until no more bubbles rise.
3. **Fit it**: Place it in the tank, fill to MAX and put the tank back.
4. **Activate it**: Under the outlet, hold the AquaClean icon for 3 seconds, press Start / Stop and wait for the AquaClean light to turn blue.

Check your own manual for the activation steps, since the 3100 uses the menu and the 2200 and 3200 use the button.

## Rinsing and the first cup

- The rinse is part of the descale. Do not skip it.
- Fill to the Calc / Clean level. A short fill may need another rinse, the manual says.
- After the rinse the 3100 manual suggests cleaning the brew group with its weekly cycle before fitting the new filter.
- The 3100 manual says not to drink the solution or the water dispensed during descaling. Taste the first drink of plain hot water. Any sharpness means rinse again.
- Make a coffee. If the first cup tastes sour, run another tank of fresh water through the system.

## If the descale is interrupted

Philips' support page says not to interrupt the process once it has started. The 3100 manual explains what to do if it happens anyway.

| Situation | What the 3100 manual says |
| --- | --- |
| You want to pause | Press the escape button to pause, then OK to continue |
| The run seems stuck | Press the standby button to leave it |
| A power cut or an accidental unplugging | Empty and rinse the tank thoroughly. Fill it with fresh water to the Calc / Clean level and switch on. The machine heats up and rinses automatically |
| Before you brew again after a power cut | Dispense half a tank of hot water, then run two cups of pre-ground coffee through without adding any grounds |
| The descale was not completed | The machine needs another descale as soon as possible |

The recovery steps are from the 3100 manual. Another series may recover differently, so check yours.

## Reading the lights and messages

| What you see | What it means | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Calc / Clean light steady | Descaling is due | Philips support page |
| Calc / Clean light flashing | Descaling is due (the retailer's 2200 and 3200 article uses this wording) | Retailer |
| START CALC CLEAN | Descale now | 3100 manual |
| DESCALE BEFORE ACTIVATING FILTER | The filter has been replaced 8 times; descale first | 3100 manual |
| Water tank empty light | On the 2200 and 3200, the descaling phase is over | Retailer |
| Tick on screen | The rinse has finished; press OK to leave | 3100 manual |
| Drink icons steady | The 2200 and 3200 are ready | Retailer |

Philips' page says a steady Calc / Clean light signals the need, and the retailer says flashing. We have shown both. If you cannot tell which your machine shows, check the manual for your model.

## How often to descale a Philips

| Setting | Interval | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| With an AquaClean filter, replaced on time | About once every 1.5 years, when the machine signals | Retailer walk-throughs |
| Without a filter | About every 3 months | Retailer walk-throughs |
| Any machine | When the light or message appears | Philips support page |
| After 8 filter replacements | The 3100 asks for a descale before activating the next filter | 3100 manual |

Those intervals come from a retailer's advice and not from Philips. Use them as a starting point and follow the machine. If the flow slows, the coffee cools, or white flakes appear before the prompt, scale is building faster than average, so descale earlier.

Hard water shortens the gap, and a filter lengthens it. The AquaClean filter only works while you replace it on time.

## Why Philips machines scale up

Limescale is calcium and magnesium that settle out of hot water. Philips' own descaler page says limescale on the heater absorbs heat that should go to the water, so coffee comes out cooler. A coat of scale also narrows the small passages, so flow drops and the pump works harder.

The descaler is an acid that dissolves the mineral layer. It does nothing about coffee oil, which collects in the brew group, or milk residue, which collects in the milk system. That is why the 3100 manual pairs descaling with a brew group clean, and why a freshly descaled machine can still taste bitter if the brew group is dirty.

| Symptom | Likely cause | First step |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Slow flow, loud pump | Scale in the narrow passages | Descale |
| Cooler coffee | Scale on the heater | Descale |
| White flakes in the cup | Scale breaking loose | Descale and rinse fully |
| Bitter or flat taste | Oil in the brew group | Clean the brew group |
| Milk system fouled | Milk residue | Clean the milk system or LatteGo |

## Mistakes that damage a Philips

| Mistake | Why it matters |
| --- | --- |
| Using a descaler that is not Philips' | The manual says other products may damage the machine and leave residues |
| Leaving the AquaClean filter in | The 3100 display asks you to remove it first, and The sources says to |
| Fitting the new filter before the rinse | Every source says to do it after |
| Interrupting the cycle | Philips warns against it and an incomplete cycle needs repeating |
| Underfilling the tank on the rinse | The manual says another rinse may be needed |
| Not emptying the drip tray first | The manual warns of water under the machine |
| Removing the brew group during descale | The manual says you cannot |
| Drinking the solution or the first water | The manual says not to |
| Ignoring the prompt for months | The manual says the machine will stop working properly and the warranty will not cover repairs |

The costly one is the last. Descaling on schedule is cheap, and a heater clogged beyond a descale is not.

## Troubleshooting a Philips descale

### The machine will not enter the programme

- On the 2200 and 3200, hold the Calc / Clean icon for the full 3 seconds before pressing Start / Stop.
- On a display model, use MENU, then DESCALING, then OK.
- Check that the water tank holds the mixture and is seated.
- Check that the trays and the filter are as the display expects.

### The cycle stops partway

- The tank may be empty. Refill it with fresh water to the Calc / Clean level and continue as the display says.
- The container may be full. Empty it.
- Heavy scale can slow the flow. Repeat the descale after the first one finishes.

### The message returns straight after a descale

The rinse may not have completed, the tank may not have been filled to the Calc / Clean level, or the cycle was interrupted. Run the programme again from the start. If it comes back after a full clean cycle, book a visit.

### Water leaks beneath the machine

An overflowing drip tray leaves water under the machine. If the trays were empty and water still leaks, the cause is a seal or a hose. Switch the machine off and book a visit.

### Coffee tastes sour or sharp afterwards

Run another tank of fresh water through, including the hot water outlet and the milk system.

## Safety with acid descaler

- Keep the bottle closed and away from children and pets.
- Follow the safety and first-aid text on the pack.
- Wipe spills at once. Acid marks some worktops and natural stone.
- Do not mix descalers or use two products together.
- Do not drink the solution or the water dispensed during descaling, as the 3100 manual says.
- Pour waste away with plenty of running water, as the pack directs.

## Buying a second-hand Philips

A used Philips fully automatic machine has a history you cannot see. The tank, the heater and the brew group all carry it.

- Look into the tank with a torch. A white crust on the walls tells you the water was hard.
- Ask the seller whether it used an AquaClean filter and when it was last descaled.
- Descale it with the programme for your model, then rinse.
- Clean the brew group and the milk system.
- Fit a new filter after the rinse if you plan to use one.

If the descale will not start, or the machine leaks or does not heat, book a visit before you use it.

## When descaling is not the answer: call a technician

| After a proper descale | What it means | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Flow and heat back to normal | It was scale | Keep to the schedule |
| Still weak or no flow | Pump, valve or blocked path | Book a visit |
| Lukewarm coffee | Heater or thermostat | Book a visit |
| Leaks beneath the machine | Seal, hose or pump | Switch off and book a visit |
| Message returns after two full cycles | A sensor or control fault | Book a visit |
| Grinder noise or no grind | Burrs, motor or a jam | Switch off and book a visit |
| Brew group will not move or fit | Mechanical fault | Book a visit |
| Machine under warranty | The dealer or Philips may repair it | Contact them first |

We repair Philips fully automatic coffee machines at your home or office in Dubai. The visit is AED 100 plus VAT, the repair is AED 80 to AED 400 depending on the fault, and the price is agreed before work starts. Parts are genuine and a month of cover applies. See [coffee machine repair](https://oneclickdubai.com/services/coffee-machine-repair-dubai).

## A realistic timeline

The programme itself is about half an hour, but the whole job is longer. Plan around this.

| Stage | Time | What happens |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Preparation | 5 to 10 minutes | Empty the trays, remove the filter and milk system, mix the tank, place the container |
| Descaling phase | About 20 minutes | The machine dispenses at intervals until the tank is empty (3100 manual) |
| Tank rinse and refill | 2 to 3 minutes | You rinse the tank and refill it to the Calc / Clean level |
| Rinse phase | About 3 minutes | Fresh water runs through the circuit |
| Brew group clean and new filter | 5 to 10 minutes | Weekly clean cycle, then fit and activate the filter |

Start when you will be nearby for the whole run. The machine needs you at two points: when the tank empties, and when the display asks for fresh water. If you walk away, it waits, and the solution sits in the lines longer than it should.

## To filter or not to filter

The AquaClean filter is the biggest single choice in how often you descale. The retailer figures are about once every 1.5 years with a filter replaced on time, and about every 3 months without one. That is a large difference in effort, but a filter has its own costs: you replace it on a schedule, and the 3100 manual makes you descale before you activate one for the first time.

| | With AquaClean | Without a filter |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Descaling | Rare, when the machine asks | About every 3 months, or when it asks |
| Routine | Replace the filter on time and confirm it in the menu | None beyond descaling |
| Risk | A late filter change means the protection lapses | Scale builds faster and the flow drops sooner |
| First step | Descale the machine, then fit the filter | Descale when prompted |

If you are not sure the filter gets changed on time, set a reminder when you fit it. If you would rather not manage a filter, plan the three-month descale and keep the Philips solution in the cupboard.

## Caring for the machine between descales

| Task | How often |
| --- | --- |
| Empty and rinse the drip tray | Every day, and before every descale |
| Empty the grounds container | Every day |
| Refresh the water in the tank | Every day |
| Rinse and clean the milk system or LatteGo | After each milk drink, as your manual describes |
| Brew group clean | Weekly. The 3100 manual refers to a weekly cleaning cycle |
| Wipe the outlets and the front | Weekly |
| Descale | When the light or message appears |

These routines keep coffee oil and milk from building up. They sit alongside descaling and do not replace it.

## How to find the right instructions for your series

Philips lists its descaling instructions by series on one support page, with a separate section for each. Look for yours in this order.

1. **Read the rating plate**: The model number begins EP. Copy it exactly.
2. **Find the series name**: The user manual and the box give it, for example 3200 or 4300.
3. **Open Philips' descaling page**: Pick the section for your series. The page lists Espresso 2300 and 3300, the 4300, 4400, 5400 and 5500, the 0800, 1200, 2200 and 3200, the 5000, the 4000 and 3100, the 3000 and the 2100.
4. **Check the machine for a display**: If it has one, the steps use the menu. If it only has lights, they use the Calc / Clean icon.
5. **Compare with this guide**: Where the two differ, follow Philips.

The series names matter more than the colour or the milk system. The same series can come with a classic milk frother or with LatteGo, and the descaling steps cover both.

## Leaving the machine unused

- Empty the tank, rinse it and leave it open to dry.
- Empty the grounds container and the drip tray.
- Clean the milk system if it was in use.
- Remove the AquaClean filter if the machine will sit unused for a long time, and check your manual for storing it.
- When you return, fill the tank with fresh water and run a rinse before the first coffee.

If the prompt was already showing when you left, descale before you use it.

## Two things people ask before they start

### Do I have to use a full bottle?

Sources disagree on the dose. The retailer's 2200 and 3200 article says to pour in one whole bottle, the 3100 manual gives no dose and says to pour in the solution, and Philips describes the 250 ml CA6700 as one descaling cycle. Read the pack that came with your descaler and use the amount it states, topping up with fresh water to the Calc / Clean level. Using less than the pack states leaves the solution weaker than the machine expects.

### Can I make a coffee while the prompt is showing?

The 3100 manual warns that the machine will eventually stop working properly if you do not descale. Treat the prompt as a deadline and set aside an hour the same week.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I descale a Philips coffee machine?

Take out the AquaClean filter, empty and refit the trays, fill the tank with the Philips descaler and fresh water to the Calc / Clean level, put a 1.5 litre container under the outlet and start the programme for your model. Then rinse with fresh water and refit a new filter.

### How do I descale a Philips 3200?

Hold the Calc / Clean icon for 3 seconds, press Start / Stop, wait for the water tank empty light, rinse the tank, refill and press Start / Stop for the rinse. The full steps are above, and they come from a retailer's walk-through.

### What does Calc / Clean mean on a Philips?

It is the descaling programme and its light. Philips says a steady light, or a prompt on the display, means descaling is due.

### What descaler does Philips recommend?

Philips' support page names Descaling solution CA6700. A Philips regional page marks it discontinued, so check which product your manual names.

### Can I use vinegar in a Philips machine?

We do not recommend it. The manual says products other than Philips or Saeco descaling solution may damage the machine and leave residues in the water.

### How long does descaling take?

Philips says up to 30 minutes in some cases. The 3100 manual gives about 20 minutes for descaling and 3 for the rinse.

### How often should I descale?

When the machine asks. A retailer suggests about every 1.5 years with a filter replaced on time and about every 3 months without one.

### Do I remove the AquaClean filter?

Yes, before descaling. Fit a new one after the rinse and confirm it.

### What if the power goes out mid-descale?

Empty and rinse the tank, fill it with fresh water to the Calc / Clean level, switch on and let it rinse. Then dispense half a tank of hot water and run two cups of pre-ground coffee through without grounds. Descale again as soon as possible.

### Can I descale without the Philips product?

Philips and its manual say to use the Philips solution. If your machine is out of warranty the choice is yours, but we cannot vouch for products the manual warns against.

### The message came back after descaling. What now?

Check that you filled the tank to the Calc / Clean level for the rinse and let the cycle finish. If it persists after a full programme, book a visit.
