Smeg espresso, drip and fully automatic machines descale differently. Find your type, use a descaler Smeg recommends and rinse to the maximum mark.

Smeg makes three kinds of coffee machine that people descale: the retro espresso machine with a portafilter, the drip filter coffee maker and the fully automatic bean-to-cup machine. They look as though they belong to one family, but each descales differently. The espresso machine runs a programme from a button sequence and a steam knob. The drip machine flashes an icon and starts a mode from two buttons. The fully automatic machine uses the lungo button and a middle button, then tells you the result with the colour of its lights.

This guide covers all three, using Smeg's own manuals for the ECF01 espresso machine and the DCF02 drip machine, and a published walk-through for Smeg fully automatic machines. It explains which descaler to use, what the lights mean, how often to do it, what goes wrong and when the problem is not scale.

If your Smeg is faulty rather than due for a descale, see the signs near the end. For a repair, see [coffee machine repair in Dubai](https://oneclickdubai.com/services/coffee-machine-repair-dubai), or for a portafilter machine [espresso machine repair](https://oneclickdubai.com/services/espresso-machine-repair-dubai). For other makes there is a [general guide to descaling a coffee machine](https://oneclickdubai.com/guides/how-to-descale-a-coffee-machine).

## How to descale a Smeg machine: the short answer

1. **Find your type**: Retro espresso (ECF01 style), drip filter (DCF02 style) or fully automatic. The steps differ.
2. **Wait for the signal**: The ECF01 shows an orange light. The DCF02 flashes a DESCALING icon. The fully automatic machine shows a descaling light, and if it flashes you must descale before making more coffee.
3. **Use a descaler Smeg approves**: Smeg's manuals say to use descaling products recommended by Smeg, and warn that others may damage the machine.
4. **Mix the solution**: Mix water and descaler as the pack states and pour it into the tank, up to the maximum mark.
5. **Put a container under the outlet**: A container of at least 1.4 litres is used in the fully automatic walk-through. On the ECF01 you put a container under the frothing nozzle.
6. **Start the descaling mode**: Hold the buttons your model uses. The sequences are below.
7. **Let it run**: The machine runs the solution through and pauses on its own.
8. **Rinse**: Empty the tank, fill it with fresh water to the maximum mark, and run the rinse cycle.
9. **Check the lights**: The orange light goes off, the icon disappears or the buttons turn white when it is finished.

The sections below take each type in turn, with the lights and the mistakes to avoid.

## Which Smeg do you have?

| Type | What it looks like | What we could confirm |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Retro espresso (ECF01 and similar) | Rounded 50s-style machine with a portafilter, steam wand and buttons on the front | ECF01 manual steps and lights |
| Drip filter (DCF02 and similar) | A filter coffee maker with a display, a clock and a glass or thermal jug | DCF02 manual steps and the DESCALING icon |
| Fully automatic (BCC series and others) | Bean-to-cup with a hopper, buttons for espresso and lungo, and a milk or steam option on some | A published walk-through for Smeg fully automatic machines |
| Other Smeg models | Capsule machines, manual espresso machines and others | Not confirmed. Use your manual |

Look at the base or back of the machine for the model code, such as ECF01, DCF02 or BCC. Search the code with the word manual and compare the steps with those below. The model names on the plate matter more than the colour of the machine, because Smeg sells the same body in many colours.

## What Smeg says about the descaler

The ECF01 and DCF02 manuals say the same thing in the same words, and it is worth reading before you shop.

| Point | What the Smeg manuals say |
| --- | --- |
| Which descaler | Use descaling products recommended by Smeg |
| Why | Other products may damage the machine |
| The product | The descaler contains acid that can irritate skin and eyes |
| If it touches skin or eyes | Follow the first-aid instructions on the descaler pack |
| The dose | Mix water and descaler as the manufacturer of the descaler recommends, up to the maximum level in the tank |

If your machine is under warranty, ask the dealer which product Smeg approves. If it is out of warranty, read the pack for coffee machines, use the pack's dose and never mix products.

Searches for a Smeg recommended descaler have a plain answer: Smeg's manuals say to use one that Smeg recommends, and the dealer or Smeg's support can name it for your model.

## When to descale

| Smeg type | Signal | What it means |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Retro espresso (ECF01) | The orange light comes on | Descaling is needed |
| Drip filter (DCF02) | The DESCALING icon flashes. The machine bases this on the water hardness you set in the menu | Descale when prompted. You can still brew while the alarm is active |
| Fully automatic | The descaling light stays on | You can still make a few cups. Descale soon |
| Fully automatic | The descaling light flashes | You must descale before the machine will make coffee again |
| Any Smeg | Slow flow, cooler coffee, white flakes | Scale is building. Descale early |

The fully automatic walk-through adds an average of about every two months, and says hard water means more often. That is a retailer's advice and not a Smeg figure, so follow the machine's own signal where it has one. For the DCF02, set the water hardness correctly in the menu. The machine uses that setting to decide when to ask.

A signal that is ignored is a job postponed. The machine does not forget, and the scale keeps building.

## What you need

- A descaler recommended by Smeg for your model.
- A container for the liquid. For the fully automatic machine, one of at least 1.4 litres. For the ECF01, a container under the frothing nozzle that is large enough for the solution.
- Fresh water for the solution and for the rinse.
- A cloth and a tray, because acidic descaler can mark worktops.
- Gloves if your skin is sensitive.
- Your manual, or its web page open on your phone, to match the icons and buttons.
- About half an hour for an espresso or drip machine, and a little longer for a fully automatic machine.

The ECF01 manual and the DCF02 manual both warn that the descaler is acidic. Handle it as the pack says, and keep it away from children and pets.

## Descaling a Smeg retro espresso machine (ECF01)

The ECF01 manual gives the sequence below. The manual page dropped some icon and button names, so we describe each stage in words and ask you to match it to the picture in your own manual.

1. **Wait for the orange light**: Descaling is needed when the orange light comes on.
2. **Fill the tank**: Fill the water tank with the water and descaler solution.
3. **Switch on**: Use the ON/OFF switch.
4. **Remove the filter holder**: Take out the portafilter. Place a container under the frothing nozzle.
5. **Wait for the ready light**: An indicator light stays on steadily when the machine is ready.
6. **Enter descaling mode**: Press and hold the descaling button, shown by an icon in the manual, for 10 seconds, until the three buttons flash in sequence.
7. **Turn the steam knob**: Turn it to the position shown in the manual.
8. **Start the programme**: Press the button shown in the manual. The machine runs automatic rinse cycles at intervals until the tank is empty.
9. **Help the boiler outlet**: During descaling, close the steam knob now and then, so some solution comes out of the boiler outlet.
10. **Stop point**: When the tank is empty, the cycle stops and the orange light comes on.
11. **Empty and rinse the tank**: Rinse it under running water.

### The rinse cycle

1. **Fill with fresh water**: Fill the tank to the maximum mark and put it back.
2. **Set the steam knob and container**: Place an empty container under the frothing nozzle and set the steam knob to the position the manual shows.
3. **Press the steam button again**: To start the rinse.
4. **Flush the outlet**: Close the steam knob now and then during the rinse, to flush the boiler outlet.
5. **Finish**: The rinse is complete when the tank is empty and the orange light goes out. Turn the steam knob back to its rest position.

If you are not sure which button or position your machine's manual shows, stop and check. Do not press buttons at random during a descale.

## Descaling a Smeg drip filter machine (DCF02)

The DCF02 manual describes a much simpler routine, driven by an icon on the display.

1. **Wait for the icon**: The DESCALING icon flashes when descaling is due. The machine decides this from the water hardness set in the menu. You can still brew while the alarm is on, but run a cycle when prompted.
2. **Mix the solution**: Pour water and a Smeg-recommended descaler into the tank up to the maximum level, using the amount the descaler's maker recommends.
3. **Remove the filter and the coffee**: Take out the paper filter and any grounds, and place the jug in position.
4. **Enter descaling mode**: Press the two buttons shown in the manual together for 5 seconds. The button LEDs flash.
5. **Wait**: The DESCALING icon keeps flashing until the cycle finishes.
6. **Finish**: When the cycle ends, the display returns to the clock and the icon disappears.
7. **Rinse**: Run a rinse as the manual describes in its section on rinsing the internal circuits.

If you press the wrong pair, nothing harmful should happen, but check the manual's diagram before you try.

Because the DCF02 bases the alarm on the water hardness you set, check that setting once. A machine set too soft asks too late.

## Descaling a Smeg fully automatic machine

This sequence comes from a retailer's walk-through for Smeg fully automatic machines. It matches the lungo and middle button layout of the BCC series. If your machine's buttons differ, use your manual.

1. **Place the container**: Put a container of at least 1.4 litres under the coffee outlet.
2. **Fill the tank**: Fill the water tank with fresh water to the Max mark.
3. **Add the descaler**: Add the descaler to the water, in the amount the pack says.
4. **Start the mode**: Press the lungo button and the middle button together for 3 seconds.
5. **Watch the lights**: The lungo button flashes orange and the descaling light stays on while the programme runs.
6. **Wait for white**: Descaling is done when the lungo button and the descaling indicator turn white.

### The rinse

1. **Empty the container**: Put it back under the outlet.
2. **Fill with fresh water**: Fill the tank to the Max mark.
3. **Press the lungo button**: To start the rinse.
4. **Watch the lights**: The lungo button flashes white and the indicator stays on during the rinse.
5. **Finish**: The rinse is finished when the tank is empty and all the buttons are white.

The walk-through gives no total running time. Allow half an hour or more, and stay within earshot so you can empty the container.

## Reading the lights: orange, white and flashing

| Machine | Light | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| ECF01 | Orange, steady | Descaling is due |
| ECF01 | Three buttons flashing in sequence | You have entered descaling mode |
| ECF01 | Orange comes on when the tank empties | Descaling cycle finished. Move on to the rinse |
| ECF01 | Orange goes out after the rinse | Rinse complete |
| DCF02 | DESCALING icon flashing | Descaling is due, or the cycle is running |
| DCF02 | Icon gone and the clock back | Cycle complete |
| Fully automatic | Descaling light steady | A few cups left before you must descale |
| Fully automatic | Descaling light flashing | Descale before you can make coffee again |
| Fully automatic | Lungo button flashing orange | Descaling running |
| Fully automatic | Lungo button and indicator white | Descaling done |

The colours come from the manuals and the walk-through, and your machine's may differ slightly. If a light you see is not in this table, check the manual or message us a photo.

## Rinsing and the first cup

- Rinse the tank under running water before you fill it for the rinse. It still holds solution.
- Fill to the maximum mark and let the machine empty the tank.
- On the ECF01, close the steam knob now and then during the rinse, so fresh water flushes the boiler outlet.
- Smell the water that runs through. Any trace of descaler means rinse again.
- Make a drink of plain water, then a coffee, and taste it.
- If the taste is sharp, run another full tank of fresh water through.

Smeg's descaler is acidic, so a thorough rinse protects both the seals and your cup.

## Cleaning your Smeg between descales

| Part | Routine |
| --- | --- |
| Water tank | Rinse daily and refill with fresh water |
| Drip tray and grid | Empty daily, wash weekly |
| Portafilter and baskets (espresso) | Rinse after each use. Soak weekly in espresso cleaner |
| Steam wand or frothing nozzle | Wipe after each use and purge. Clear the holes if they clog |
| Brew unit and grounds container (automatic) | Empty the grounds container daily. Clean the brew unit as your manual says |
| Jug and filter basket (drip) | Wash after each use |
| Outside | Wipe with a soft damp cloth. The retro finish scratches, so avoid abrasive pads |

Descaling does not clean coffee oil or milk residue. Do both jobs, at their own intervals.

## Mistakes that damage a Smeg

| Mistake | Why it matters |
| --- | --- |
| Using any descaler that comes to hand | Smeg's manuals say others may damage the machine |
| Guessing at the button sequence | ECF01, DCF02 and fully automatic machines differ |
| Ignoring a flashing light on a fully automatic | It will not make coffee until you descale |
| Leaving the paper filter or grounds in the drip machine | They get wet with the solution and block the path |
| Skipping the rinse | Acidic solution left in the lines tastes sharp |
| Setting the wrong water hardness (DCF02) | The machine asks too late or too early |
| Splashing acidic descaler on worktops | It can mark surfaces and irritate skin and eyes |
| Mixing descalers | It can harm the machine |
| Scrubbing the retro body with abrasives | The finish scratches |

The one we meet most is ignoring the orange light on the espresso machine until the flow has nearly stopped. Descaling at the first light is easier than descaling after months of delay.

## Troubleshooting a Smeg descale

### The machine will not enter descaling mode

- Hold the buttons for the full time: 10 seconds on the ECF01, 5 seconds on the DCF02, 3 seconds on the fully automatic machine.
- Check that the tank holds solution and is seated.
- On the ECF01, check that the portafilter is out and the indicator light is steady.
- Check the manual for the buttons your model uses.

### The cycle stops partway

- The tank is empty. Refill it with the right mixture.
- The container is full. Empty it.
- Heavy scale is slowing the flow. Repeat the descale after the first one finishes.

### The orange light stays on after the rinse

The rinse did not finish, or the tank was not filled to the maximum mark. Run the rinse again until the tank is empty. If the light stays, the cycle did not register, and a repeat of the full programme may be needed.

### The fully automatic still flashes

A flashing descaling light means the machine will not brew until it is descaled. Run the full programme, with the rinse.

### The retro espresso machine gives no steam or water

Check that the steam knob is in the position the manual shows for the stage you are on. A knob in the wrong position stops the flow.

### Coffee tastes sharp afterwards

Run two or three more tanks of fresh water through, including the steam wand or frothing nozzle.

## When descaling is not the answer: call a technician

| After a proper descale | What it means | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Flow and heat back to normal | It was scale | Keep to the schedule |
| Still weak or no flow | Pump, valve or a blocked path | Book a visit |
| Coffee still lukewarm | Heater or thermostat | Book a visit |
| Leaks beneath the machine | Seal, hose or pump | Switch off and book a visit |
| Light stays on after two full cycles | A sensor or a control fault | Book a visit |
| Steam weak on the espresso machine | Blocked nozzle, valve or heater | Clear the nozzle, then book a visit |
| Grinder noise or no grind (automatic) | Burrs, motor or a jam | Switch off and book a visit |
| Machine under warranty | The dealer or Smeg may repair it | Contact them first |

## Why scale builds up differently in each Smeg

Scale is mineral left behind when hot water evaporates or cools. Calcium and magnesium in the water settle as a hard white crust on whatever is hottest, and the hottest parts of a coffee machine are the ones that matter most: the heater, the boiler and the narrow pipes leading from them.

The retro espresso machine and the fully automatic machine both push water through small passages under pressure, so a thin layer of scale there cuts the flow quickly. Coffee comes out slower, cooler and with a weaker body, and you may hear the pump working harder. The drip machine has a simpler path, but its heating element still gets coated. A coated element takes longer to bring the water to temperature, and the jug of coffee ends up lukewarm.

The descaler is an acid. It dissolves the mineral layer so the water carries it out. It has no effect on coffee oil, milk or mould, which need their own cleaning. That is why a machine can be freshly descaled and still taste bitter: the scale is gone but the oil in the brew path is not.

| Symptom | Likely cause | First step |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Slow flow, loud pump | Scale in the narrow passages | Descale |
| Lukewarm coffee | Scale on the heater, or a heating fault | Descale, then test again |
| White flakes in the cup | Scale breaking loose | Descale and rinse thoroughly |
| Bitter or stale taste | Old coffee oil in the brew path | Clean the brew parts, then descale if due |
| Weak steam | Scale or a blocked nozzle | Clear the nozzle, then descale |
| Strange smell | Residue, mould or old milk | Clean first |

## How hard water changes your schedule

The harder the water, the faster scale forms, and the more often the machine asks for a descale. The DCF02 manual builds this into the machine: you set the water hardness in the menu and the machine decides when to flash the DESCALING icon. If the setting does not match your water, the reminder comes at the wrong time.

- Ask your building management or water provider for the hardness of your supply, or test it with a cheap strip kit from a pet or aquarium shop.
- Set the DCF02 menu to match what you find.
- For a machine without a hardness setting, descale when the light comes on, and descale earlier if you notice slow flow or cooler coffee.
- If you use filtered or bottled water, scale forms more slowly.
- If you fill the tank from a jug, use fresh water every day. Standing water picks up flavours and encourages film in the tank.

A water filter cartridge slows scale but does not remove the need to descale. If your Smeg model accepts a filter, check the manual for how and when to change it.

## Before you start: a five-minute preparation

Most descaling problems come from rushing the start. Take five minutes first.

1. **Read the model plate**: Note the code on the base or back, so you follow the right sequence.
2. **Open the manual**: Search the code with the word manual and keep the page open on your phone. Match each icon with the one on your machine.
3. **Empty the machine**: Discard old water, remove any capsule or paper filter, empty the grounds container and the drip tray.
4. **Set up the surface**: Put the machine on a surface that tolerates acid, with a tray or cloth under the container. Keep descaler away from natural stone and polished metal.
5. **Measure the descaler**: Read the pack and measure the dose. Mix it with the water in a separate jug and then pour it into the tank, so the tank is not overfilled.
6. **Allow the time**: Do not start if you need the machine in the next hour. A descale that is interrupted leaves solution in the lines.

If the descale light is steady, you have time to plan. If it is flashing on a fully automatic machine, the machine will not brew until you descale, so clear the time now.

## Safety with acid descaler

Both Smeg manuals warn that the descaler is acidic and can irritate skin and eyes. That is standard for descaling products and it deserves respect.

- Keep the pack closed and out of reach of children and pets.
- Wear gloves if your skin is sensitive, and avoid touching your face while handling it.
- If it touches your skin or eyes, follow the first-aid instructions printed on the pack.
- Wipe spills straight away. Acid can dull some worktops and marks natural stone.
- Do not mix descalers with each other, or with other cleaners.
- Pour the used solution away down the sink with plenty of running water, as the pack directs.
- Do not drink the solution or the first rinse water.

Because the solution has been through the machine, it carries dissolved scale. Treat it as waste, not as something to reuse on another appliance.

## Descale, clean and rinse: which job, how often

| Job | What it removes | How often |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Empty and refill the tank | Stale water | Every day |
| Empty the drip tray and grounds | Wet coffee waste | Every day |
| Wipe the steam wand or nozzle | Milk and coffee film | After each use |
| Wash the portafilter, baskets, jug or filter basket | Coffee oil | Weekly, or after each use for the jug |
| Clean the brew unit (automatic) | Coffee oil and fines | As your manual states |
| Descale | Mineral scale | When the machine signals, or every few months in hard water |
| Rinse after descaling | Descaler solution | Every descale |

The signal-based approach is what both Smeg manuals describe. If your machine has no signal, a calendar reminder every two or three months is a practical stand-in. Shorten the gap if you notice the flow slowing.

## Buying a second-hand Smeg or inheriting one

A Smeg of unknown history is a machine of unknown scale. If you buy one second-hand, or receive one from a relative, treat the first descale as a reset.

- Empty the tank and look inside it with a torch. White crust on the walls or the float means the machine has been run on hard water.
- Run a full descale with the cycle for your model, then a rinse.
- Run two more tanks of fresh water through before the first coffee.
- Clean the portafilter, baskets and brew parts, because oil builds up in unused machines.
- Check seals and hoses for cracks and look for leaks during the rinse.

If the machine will not enter the descaling mode, leaks, or gives no heat, book a visit rather than forcing it.

Ask the seller for the model code and the date of purchase if you can. A Smeg still under warranty is best taken back to the dealer for any fault, and a machine with a missing manual is easy to replace with a download. Keep the descaler pack with the machine, so whoever uses it next knows which product it was run on.

## Leaving the machine for a few weeks

If you travel, a Smeg left with water in the tank grows film and smells when you return.

- Empty the tank and rinse it.
- Empty the grounds container and the drip tray.
- Wipe the steam wand or nozzle.
- Unplug the machine and leave the lid or tank open to dry.
- On return, fill with fresh water and run a rinse before the first coffee.

If the machine has been sitting a long time and the orange or descaling light was already on before you left, descale it before use.

## How to read the Smeg manual for your model

Smeg's manuals share a layout, and the descaling steps sit in a section called descaling, usually after the cleaning section. Knowing how to read it saves guesswork when this guide and your machine disagree.

- Find the section titled descaling or decalcification and read it from start to finish before touching the machine.
- Look for the numbered diagram of the control panel. Every button and icon in the steps is a number from that diagram.
- Note how long each button is held. The manuals use 3, 5 and 10 seconds depending on the model.
- Note the light that marks the end. Orange, white and an icon that disappears are the three.
- Find the rinse section separately, because some manuals place it a few pages after the descale steps.
- Check the warnings. The the manuals name acid as the hazard and say to use a Smeg-recommended product.

If your manual and this guide differ, the manual wins. We wrote this from the ECF01 and DCF02 manuals and a fully automatic walk-through, and newer models may change a button or a timing.

## A simple descale log

A short note after each descale shows if your schedule fits your water. Keep it in your phone.

| Date | Light that prompted it | Descaler used | Result |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| First descale | Orange or flashing icon | Name of the product | Flow and temperature after |
| Second descale | Same light | Same product | How many weeks since the last one |
| Third descale | Same light | Same product | Compare the gap. A shrinking gap means harder water or a filter that needs changing |

If the gap between descales keeps shrinking, shorten your reminder. If the light comes back within days of a descale, scale is probably not the cause, and a technician should look at the machine.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I descale a Smeg coffee machine?

Use a Smeg-recommended descaler, mix the solution as the pack says, pour it into the tank, start the descaling mode for your model, let it run, then rinse with fresh water to the maximum mark.

### How often should I descale a Smeg?

When the machine signals. A retailer walk-through suggests about every two months for a fully automatic machine, and more often in hard water.

### What descaler does Smeg recommend?

Ask your dealer or Smeg for your model.

### Can I use Durgol or NoKalk?

A walk-through for the fully automatic machine uses Durgol Universal. Under warranty, ask the dealer. Otherwise read the pack for coffee machines.

### How do I descale a Smeg BCC02?

The BCC series is a fully automatic machine. Press the lungo button and the middle button together for 3 seconds, as the fully automatic steps above describe, and check your manual for your model.

### How do I descale a Smeg ECF01?

Wait for the orange light, put solution in the tank, remove the filter holder, place a container under the frothing nozzle and hold the descaling button for 10 seconds until the three buttons flash. The steps are above.

### What does the orange light on my Smeg mean?

On the ECF01 it means descaling is needed. It also comes on when the descaling cycle stops with an empty tank.

### Can I still make coffee with the descale light on?

On the fully automatic machine, a steady light leaves a few cups. A flashing light stops brewing until you descale.

### Do I need to rinse?

Yes. The manuals includes a rinse with fresh water. Smeg's descaler is acidic.

### The cycle will not start. What now?

Hold the buttons for the full time, check that the tank holds solution and check that your model uses that sequence.

### Is it safe to touch the descaler?

It is acidic and can irritate skin and eyes. Follow the first-aid instructions on the pack.

### Who repairs Smeg coffee machines in Dubai?
