ECM machines are the ones people buy when they want a proper E61-style espresso machine at home or in a small office: the Puristika, Classika, Mechanika and Technika with one boiler or a heat exchanger, and the Synchronika with two boilers. They fail in a few predictable ways. The shot stops dripping and starts sputtering, the group drips when it should be dry, the pump will not draw water, the display asks for a group clean, or limescale has begun to clog the valves.

This page sets out what ECM's own manuals say about those problems. We worked from the Puristika PID manual, which has the most complete troubleshooting table, and from the Technika IV manual's cleaning and descaling chapters. For the Synchronika we used the setup guide of a retailer, Clive Coffee, and we label it as that.

Book a visit and a technician comes to your home or office, usually the same day. The technician finds the fault, gives you a price, and repairs the machine at your door unless it has to go to the workshop, in which case we collect it.

## ECM espresso machine repair in Dubai: what we fix and what it costs

Diagnosis costs AED 100 plus 5% VAT. A typical ECM repair after that falls between AED 80 and AED 400 depending on the part, and no part goes in until you have said yes to the price.

- A photo of the machine, its front panel and the type plate lets us plan the visit.
- Parts are genuine and priced together with labour.
- The part and the work carry a one-month warranty.
- Your kitchen is the first choice of workshop.

| Fault | Typical work | Where it sits in the range |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Group drips when the portafilter is locked in | Replace the group gasket and shower screen together | Lower end |
| Little or no crema, sputtering or weak shots | Check grind, dose and shower screen, then the group and pump | Lower to middle |
| No water drawn, or the pump runs dry | Check hoses, tank fitting and the pump prime, then the pump | Lower to middle |
| Steam weak or wet | Clean or replace the steam valve parts, then test the boiler | Lower to middle |
| Scale in the boiler, valves or gauge | Assess the damage, descale or strip and clean | Middle to upper |
| Display shows a message that will not clear | Reset, then test sensors and board | Lower to upper |
| Temperature unstable or the machine will not heat | Test the element, sensor and PID | Middle to upper |
| Leaks under the machine | Trace the hose, fitting or valve | Lower to middle |
| Pump noisy or weak | Check the shipping wing nuts, then the pump | Lower to middle |

We tell you straight away when a repair is not worth doing.

## Which ECM do you have?

ECM's own company page says the maker was founded by Wolfgang Hauck, began selling its own machines in 1996 with the Technika, and today makes its single-boiler and heat exchanger models in Italy. The dual-boiler Synchronika, the commercial machines and the grinder range are made by hand in Germany. The name is on the front, and the type plate on the machine carries the full model and voltage.

| Model family | Type | Manuals covered |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Puristika | Single boiler, PID | The PID user manual: troubleshooting, display messages, cleaning, safety, technical data |
| Technika | Heat exchanger | The Technika IV manual: cleaning, brew group degreasing, prophylactic descaling, gasket replacement |
| Classika, Mechanika | Single boiler or heat exchanger, by version | Not quoted on this page |
| Synchronika | Dual boiler, PID | A retailer's setup guide only, labelled as that below |
| Elektronika and others | Volumetric and others | Not quoted on this page. We repair them; check your manual for the details |

The Puristika manual says the machine is intended for household and similar settings such as staff kitchens, farmhouses and bed-and-breakfast style places, and not for commercial use. Other uses void the warranty. If you run one in a café, tell us, because the manual is written for household use.

## Who services ECM in the UAE?

ECM's company page tells the company's story and names its factories. It names no distributors and says nothing about service, spare parts or the Middle East. The Puristika manual points to a list of dealer contacts on its first page and says repairs must be done by an authorised dealer. We are an independent technician and not an authorised service partner of ECM.

| Your situation | What we suggest |
| --- | --- |
| Bought from a dealer who promises service | Ring the dealer first. A repair by anyone else may matter for the warranty |
| Out of warranty, or the dealer has gone | Message us. Most visits happen the day you message us |
| Bought abroad or second-hand | Send the type plate. Voltage, frequency and plug matter (see below) |
| Badly calcified machine | See the descaling section. The manuals send it to a specialist |

One Click Dubai has no connection with ECM. We cannot answer for the maker, and a repair by us is not a factory warranty.

## What the Puristika manual lists as faults

The Puristika manual's troubleshooting chapter is the clearest of the ECM documents. Its table pairs a problem with causes and remedies. Models with a different layout may differ, but the logic carries across the family. We paraphrase it and add what we do when the remedy fails.

| Problem | Cause the manual gives | Remedy the manual gives | When we are called |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Little or no crema | Grind not fine enough, coffee too old, too much chlorine in the water, too little coffee, dirty shower screen | Grind finer, tamp firmly, lower the brewing pressure, use fresh coffee, use a chlorine filter, use the dose marked in the basket, clean the group | It stays after the group is clean and the grind is right |
| Coffee comes drop by drop | Grind too fine, or too much coffee | Grind coarser, tamp lighter, raise the brewing pressure, use the correct dose | It stays at a coarse grind |
| Weak body | Grind not fine enough, old coffee, too little coffee, dirty shower screen | Grind finer, use fresh coffee and the correct dose, clean the shower screen | It stays |
| Foam instead of crema | Unsuitable beans, or a grinder setting that does not suit them | Use other beans, change the grinder setting | It stays with fresh beans |
| Green lamp off | Not enough water in the tank | Refill the water | The tank is full |
| Portafilter or group drips | Portafilter not locked properly, or the group gasket is broken | Lock it properly; replace the gasket and shower screen | Always, if the gasket is the cause |
| No water drawn | Connecting hoses attached incorrectly | Reconnect them as the manual's setup chapter shows | The hoses are right |
| CLn on the display | The cleaning reminder has been reached | Clean the group; it clears after the lever is operated ten times | It will not clear |
| No water from the group | Water missing | Refill the water | The tank is full |
| No water after the machine has stood idle | The pump is not drawing | Switch off, let it cool, switch on again | It happens again |
| Unexpected behaviour | Parameters have been changed | Switch off, hold the plus button and switch on to reset | It still misbehaves |

Most rows are about the grind, the dose, the group and the water. Only the gasket, the hoses and the pump are parts.

## PID display messages on an ECM

The Puristika manual explains what its display says. Other ECM models with a PID show similar prompts, but check your own manual.

| Display | Meaning in the manual |
| --- | --- |
| FIL | Fill mode. Lift the brew lever to fill the boiler. The message clears when the lever is lowered |
| UP | Heating in Fast Heat Up mode, which starts if the boiler is below 40 degrees |
| FLU | A flush is needed. Flush until rdY or Go appears. If you do not flush within a minute, FLU alternates with the temperature |
| rdY or Go | Ready to brew |
| t1 | The temperature setting menu, reached by pressing plus and minus together |
| CLn | The brew group cleaning reminder |
| Eco, FH, St, o | Menu items for the auto-off timer, Fast Heat Up and the degree scale |
| Dot permanently lit | The machine is heating |
| Dot flashing | The machine is holding the set temperature |

The Synchronika's PID is described in the retailer guide. Its left dot shows the coffee boiler (t1) and the right dot the steam boiler (t2), alternately. The factory setting heats the boilers in sequence with the coffee boiler first. You can switch off the display with the plus button, and a dot shows the machine is still on.

## The CLn reminder and cleaning the brew group

Both manuals and the retailer guide agree on the main point: clean the group regularly, and do not over-clean it.

- The reminder is off at delivery (set to 0). The retailer guide for the Synchronika says to program it by pressing plus and minus together, going to CLn and setting it in steps of 10.
- Both the Puristika manual and the retailer guide give 90 to 140 brewing cycles as the interval between group cleans. The Technika IV manual says a tablet clean can be done after about 150 cups.
- The retailer guide says that when the reminder appears you flush the group with at least ten brewing cycles to clear it.

### Cleaning the group with a blind filter (Technika IV manual)

1. **Heat the machine**: Let it come to temperature.
2. **Fit the blind filter**: Put it in the portafilter.
3. **Add the cleaner**: Half a spoon of group cleaner powder in the blind filter, or a tablet in the portafilter.
4. **Lock it in**: Attach the portafilter to the group.
5. **Fill the blind filter**: Operate the lever so it fills with water.
6. **Let it work**: Hold the lever in the middle position, not the lower one, for about 40 seconds.
7. **Discharge**: Move the lever down to flush out fats and oils.
8. **Repeat**: Repeat the fill, wait and discharge until only clear water comes out.
9. **Rinse**: Rinse the portafilter and blind filter with fresh water and refit them.
10. **Flush the group**: Run the lever for about a minute, lower it, remove the portafilter, and repeat once.

The manual warns that hot spray can escape. The Puristika manual adds that cleaning with detergent too often can make the group squeak and wear its moving parts, so run some cleans without detergent.

## Daily care and the boiler water

- Every day, clean the portafilter, filters, glass water tank, drip tray, drip plate, measuring spoon and tamper with warm water or a food-safe detergent. The Puristika manual says not to use the dishwasher.
- Clean the shower screen and the group gasket without taking them apart.
- Wipe the body with a soft damp cloth when the machine is cold, and never use abrasive or chloric detergents.
- Empty the drip tray regularly, before it fills.
- Refresh the boiler water by drawing about 0.8 litres of hot water from the group. The Puristika manual says every one to two weeks. The Technika IV manual says every two to three weeks, drawing it from the steam wand.
- On the Technika IV, clean the steam and hot water valve after every use.

The difference between one to two weeks and two to three weeks is the difference between two manuals for two machines. Follow your own.

## Replacing the group gasket and shower screen

A group that drips around the portafilter is the first fault in the manual's table, and its remedy is to replace the gasket and shower screen together. Both the Puristika and Technika IV manuals list the same two part numbers, C449900229 for the gasket and C519900103 for the shower screen. Check the numbers for your model before you order.

1. **Power down**: Switch off the machine and unplug it.
2. **Release steam**: Open the steam valve to release any steam, then close it.
3. **Cool**: Let the machine cool to room temperature.
4. **Remove**: Pry out the shower screen and the gasket with a flat screwdriver.
5. **Fit the gasket**: The rounded side with the ECM print faces up toward the group.
6. **Lock the screen in**: Press the shower screen into the new gasket.
7. **Clean the group**: Brush the group before you fit the assembly.
8. **Seat it**: Put the assembly in, clamp a portafilter without a basket and turn it until the screen locks.
9. **Lock the portafilter**: Then the group is ready.

This is a repair many owners do themselves, and it is on the manual's list of small technical service work. If it does not stop the drip, the cause is the group itself, and we should look at it.

## Water, tank and plumbing

The retailer guide for the Synchronika, which we label as such, gives several practical points that fit what the manuals say.

- Use filtered water. The retailer guide gives a target hardness of 35 to 85 parts per million and says to test the water from the group every few months, because supply hardness changes and softeners wear out.
- Do not use reverse osmosis or distilled water in a machine with a steam boiler fill probe. The retailer guide says such water lacks the minerals the probe needs and recommends adding mineral content back.
- The Puristika manual says to use soft, potable water, never carbonated water, and never to run the machine without water.
- The retailer guide says to remove the two shipping wing nuts under the machine. They secure the pump in transit but amplify pump noise.
- In the tank, the intake line must reach the bottom and be fully submerged. The retailer guide warns that otherwise the boilers can run dry and be damaged.
- Do not spill water on top of the machine when filling, because it can damage the electrics.

On a plumbed-in Synchronika, the retailer guide describes a water source switch and a braided line that is tightened by hand and then a quarter turn with a wrench. Lift the brew lever for about ten seconds before pulling a shot.

## Descaling an ECM: what the manuals actually say

This is where ECM's manuals are most cautious, and where a wrong move costs the most. We quote them closely.

- The Puristika manual says an already calcified machine may only be descaled by a specialised dealer, and that a late descale can cause substantial damage.
- The Technika manuals describe descaling as prophylactic, meaning done to stop scale, and not as a cure for a machine that is already blocked. They warn that lime residue can clog valves and gauges, and that a heavily calcified machine needs the boiler and tubing partly taken apart.
- The Technika IV manual says that with a direct water connection, you should contact your dealer before descaling. A machine with a tank follows the manual's steps.
- Use a descaler that is gentle on metal, in powder or tablet form, and take your water hardness into account.

### The steps we could see (Technika IV, heat exchanger)

1. **Heat up**: Heat the machine until the pressure reaches 1.0 to 1.2 bar.
2. **Switch off**: Switch the machine off.
3. **Empty the boiler**: Run the hot water dispenser to empty the boiler, then close it.
4. **Mix the descaler**: Dissolve it in fresh water in the tank, following the package.
5. **Fill the boiler**: Switch on so the empty boiler fills with the solution.

The pages stop there and resume at the rinse. The rinse steps that survive say to operate the group lever three times, returning it to the lower position each time, to rinse the expansion valve, then to remove the blind filter, run the lever for about 60 seconds to rinse the heat exchanger, and repeat the earlier steps three to five times to rinse the boiler. Follow the full manual, not this summary.

A retailer, Coffee Parts Australia, publishes a descaling guide for ECM and Profitec machines that treats dual-boiler and heat exchanger models separately. We therefore do not quote its steps.

If your ECM is already scaled up, with a gauge that sticks, a valve that does not close or a boiler that fills slowly, do not run a home descale. Message us and we will assess it. A professional job may involve taking the boiler apart. For the general method behind descaling any coffee machine, see our [descaling guide](https://oneclickdubai.com/guides/how-to-descale-a-coffee-machine).

## Brewing pressure: what the manual implies

Two rows of the Puristika table tell you to change the brewing pressure: lower it for little or no crema, and raise it when coffee comes drop by drop. That means the pump pressure is adjustable on the machine.

- Do not force a pump pressure screw that will not turn. Bring it to us.
- Pressure is read from the pump pressure gauge listed among the machine's parts. A gauge that sticks or reads strangely can be scale, which is a repair question.
- Change the grind and the dose before you touch the pressure. The manual's rows list them first.

When we set the pressure on a visit, we watch the gauge and tell you the figure we left it at.

## Priming the pump and filling a boiler

The manual's table has two pump rows: no water drawn when the hoses are wrong, and a pump that will not draw after standing idle. The fix for the second is to switch off, let the machine cool, and switch on again. The display prompt FIL, in the PID list, tells you the machine wants the boiler filled by lifting the brew lever.

1. **Check the tank**: Full, seated, intake line on the bottom, green lamp on.
2. **Check the hoses**: Connected as the manual's setup chapter shows.
3. **Lift the lever**: If the display shows FIL, lift the brew lever to fill the boiler and lower it when the message clears.
4. **Cool and restart**: If the pump will not draw after the machine has stood idle, switch off, let it cool and switch on again.
5. **Stop**: If it still will not draw, switch off. Running a pump dry is a way to damage it.

A pump that runs but moves no water, or a boiler that fills slowly, can be scale in the valves. That is the point to message us.

## Scale and water in Dubai

We quote no water hardness figure for Dubai, because supply varies by building and tank. The retailer guide's advice is the practical one: test the water from the group every few months, since supply hardness changes and softeners wear out. Its target for the Synchronika is 35 to 85 parts per million.

- Ask your building management whether water comes from a roof tank, and for any report they hold.
- A test strip gives you a number to work with.
- Replace the water filter on schedule.
- If strips show hard water, tell us when you book. We will look at the valves and gauge for scale.

The two manuals agree that scale prevention is cheaper than scale repair.

## Power, plug and safety

The Puristika manual lists these technical data.

| Region | Voltage and frequency, per the manual |
| --- | --- |
| EU, UK, New Zealand, Australia | 230 volts, 50 hertz |
| USA | 120 volts, 60 hertz |
| Japan | 100 volts, 50 or 60 hertz |

- Dubai's supply is 230 volts at 50 hertz, which matches the first row. A 120 volt American machine does not suit it, and nor does a Japanese one.
- The manual says to check that the local supply matches the type plate, to use only the supplied cable and an earthed socket, and not to use extension cords or multi-sockets. Dubai's sockets are the British three-pin pattern, so a machine sold for another market needs the correct cord from a dealer or from us. We do not advise stacking adapters.
- The brew group, portafilter, body and expansion valve become hot.
- Never immerse the machine, and never touch it with wet hands.
- Use only original spare parts, and have repairs done by a qualified dealer. The manual says so.

Because the manual asks for authorised repairs, tell us your warranty position when you book. If you are inside it, a repair by us may not suit.

## Parts we fit on ECM machines

| Part | Job in the machine | What you notice when it wears |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Group gasket and shower screen | Seal the portafilter and spread the water | Dripping at the group, wet pucks |
| Pump | Create the brewing pressure | Noise, weak flow, no draw |
| Hoses and fittings | Carry water from the tank or mains | Leaks, no water drawn |
| Steam and hot water valve | Make steam and hot water | Weak steam, dripping valve |
| Expansion valve | Release excess pressure | Dripping, pressure gauge reading wrong |
| Heating element and sensors | Heat the boiler | Cool coffee, long heat-up |
| Pump pressure gauge | Show brewing pressure | Sticking or wrong reading |
| Level probe and fill valve | Fill the boiler | FIL messages, slow filling |
| PID controller and display | Control temperature | Messages that will not clear, odd behaviour |
| Drip tray and tank fittings | Hold waste and supply water | Leaks, green lamp errors |

All parts are genuine. If an older ECM needs a part that has been discontinued, we tell you before quoting.

## A care routine for an ECM at home

The routine below is our own, built around the intervals the manuals give.

| When | Job |
| --- | --- |
| Every morning | Fill the tank with filtered water, flush the group, check the shot, check the drip tray |
| After each session | Wipe the steam wand and purge it, empty the tray and clean the portafilter and baskets |
| Weekly | Draw a little hot water to refresh the boiler water, clean the shower screen and gasket without taking them apart |
| Every 90 to 140 shots | Clean the group with the blind filter and group cleaner, then run clear water |
| Every few months | Test the water hardness, replace the water filter on schedule |
| When the gasket hardens or the group drips | Replace the gasket and shower screen together |

None of this takes long. A group that is cleaned on schedule and a tank of filtered water prevent most of what is in the manual's table.

## What a visit includes

1. **What happened**: Tell us what the machine did and what the display showed. We also ask about the water you use.
2. **Plate and supply**: We read the type plate, check the voltage and plug, and look at the tank or the plumbing.
3. **Gasket and group first**: A dripping or sputtering group is often the gasket, shower screen or grind, so we start there.
4. **Water side**: We check the pump, hoses and fittings for leaks and priming.
5. **Scale check**: We look at the valves and gauge for signs of scale.
6. **The price**: You hear it before any part is fitted.
7. **A real shot**: We pull a shot, steam milk and watch for drips before we leave.

A machine that must go to the workshop is collected, and you hear why and how long it will take.

## Repair or replace an ECM?

Our own test: price a new machine of the same type, and look hard at any repair that reaches half of it.

| Fault | Usual advice | Reason |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Gasket and shower screen | Repair | Cheap parts, quick work |
| Hoses, fittings, tank fitting | Repair | Small parts |
| Pump | Repair | A fraction of a new machine |
| Steam and expansion valves | Repair | Modest parts |
| Mild scale in valves | Repair | Strip and clean |
| Boiler badly scaled | Compare | Depends on how bad |
| PID or board on an older machine | Compare | Can approach a new price |

If buying new is smarter, we say so, and the only charge is the diagnosis.

## Quick checks to try first

1. **Water**: Check the tank is full and seated, the green lamp is on and the intake line reaches the bottom.
2. **Hoses**: If the pump will not draw, check the hoses are connected as the setup chapter shows.
3. **Group**: Lock the portafilter properly and look for a perished gasket.
4. **Grind and dose**: Use fresh coffee and the dose marked in the basket, and change the grind a little at a time.
5. **Reset**: If the display misbehaves, switch off, hold plus and switch on to reset the parameters.

Still faulty, or scale visible? Stop there and message us.

## Information that speeds up the booking

- The model name and the voltage on the type plate.
- What the display says and what the machine does.
- The water you use: filtered, softened, tap, bottled.
- How long you have had the machine, and where you bought it.
- The date of the last group clean and descale.

Mention anything you have already tried from this page.

## While you wait for the technician

An ECM has a boiler and a pump that draws water from the tank. If it leaks or will not draw water, switch it off, unplug it and let it cool before anyone looks inside.

- Check that the tank is filled and seated, then stop. Repeated attempts to brew do not clear a fault.
- Do not open the machine while it is hot or plugged in.
- Note what the display or the light shows, and photograph the plate on the back or the base.

## ECM repair near me: areas we cover

ECM owners in Dubai Marina, JBR, Palm Jumeirah, JLT, Downtown, Business Bay, Jumeirah, Al Barsha, Dubai Hills and Deira are within our normal visiting area. Anywhere else, message us and we will tell you what is possible.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much will an ECM repair cost me?

AED 100 plus VAT to diagnose. The repair itself is mostly AED 80 to AED 400, agreed with you before we start.

### Is there an ECM service centre in Dubai?

We are independent of ECM, and most visits take place the same day.

### Why is my ECM group dripping?

The Puristika manual lists a portafilter that is not locked properly and a broken group gasket. Lock it properly, and replace the gasket and shower screen together if it still drips.

### Why is there no crema?

The manual lists a grind that is not fine enough, old coffee, too much chlorine in the water, too little coffee and a dirty shower screen.

### What does CLn mean on my ECM?

The brew group cleaning reminder. Clean the group, and it clears after the lever is operated ten times.

### How often should I clean the group?

The Puristika manual and the retailer guide give 90 to 140 brewing cycles. The Technika IV manual says a tablet clean after about 150 cups.

### Why will my ECM not draw water?

The manual lists connecting hoses attached incorrectly, and a pump that is not drawing after standing idle. Reconnect the hoses, or switch off, cool down and switch on again.

### Can I descale my ECM myself?

The manuals describe descaling as prophylactic. An already calcified machine may only be descaled by a specialised dealer. Follow your manual's steps for a clean machine and message us if it is already scaled.

### What water should I use?

Soft, potable, non-carbonated water. A retailer guide gives 35 to 85 ppm for the Synchronika. Do not use reverse osmosis or distilled water in a steam boiler with a fill probe.

### How often should I change the boiler water?

The Puristika manual says every one to two weeks and the Technika IV manual every two to three weeks. Follow your model's manual.

### Does an ECM work on Dubai's supply?

The Puristika is made in a 230 volt, 50 hertz version, which matches Dubai. Check the type plate, and get the right cord.

### What does FLU mean on my ECM display?

On the Puristika, the manual says a flush is needed. Flush until rdY or Go appears. If you do not flush within a minute, FLU alternates with the temperature.

### Can I put the portafilter in the dishwasher?

The Puristika manual says not to use a dishwasher for the portafilter, filters, glass tank, drip tray, drip plate, measuring spoon or tamper. Wash them with warm water or a food-safe detergent.

### Can I use carbonated water in my ECM?

No. The Puristika manual says to use soft, potable water, never carbonated water, and never to run the machine without water.

### Is it worth repairing an ECM?

Gasket, hose, valve and pump work often is. For badly scaled boilers or a board on an old machine, compare the quote with a new one.
