Smeg sells coffee machines that look like part of the kitchen: the rounded ECF01 espresso machine, the DCF02 drip filter machine, the BCC01 and BCC02 bean-to-cup machines and the compact built-in units such as the CMS6451X. They are easy to love and, like any coffee machine, they stop in a few predictable ways. The coffee comes out slowly or not at all, the lights flash, a message asks for an infuser that you have already put back, the milk will not froth or water appears under the tray.

This page covers those faults using Smeg's own manuals: the ECF01 and DCF02 user manuals, the CMS6451X built-in manual and the BCC02 manual's troubleshooting excerpt. We label what comes from a retailer's blog, and we say where a manual gave no detail. Descaling has its own step-by-step page, so we link to it rather than repeat it: see our [guide to descaling a Smeg machine](https://oneclickdubai.com/guides/how-to-descale-a-smeg-coffee-machine).

When you book, a technician comes to your door, usually on the same day. He tells you what is wrong and what it costs before touching a part, and fixes it there if the machine allows. If it cannot be done at your address, we collect it.

## Smeg coffee machine repair in Dubai: what we fix and what it costs

The diagnostic visit is AED 100 plus 5% VAT. Repairs then run from AED 80 to AED 400 for most Smeg faults, depending on the part, and the price is fixed with you first.

- Send a photo of the lights and the rating plate before the visit so the right parts travel with us.
- Parts are genuine, and the price includes labour.
- A one-month warranty covers the part and the work.
- Your address is the first workshop. The real one is for what cannot be done there.

| Fault | Typical work | Where it sits in the range |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Coffee will not come out or drips slowly | Check the tank, the filter and the grind, then descale, then test the pump | Lower to middle |
| Portafilter machine drips around the filter holder | Replace the group gasket, clean the spout holes | Lower end |
| Brewing group, infuser or door alarm that will not clear | Clean and refit the infuser, then test the sensor and switch | Lower to middle |
| All lights flashing | Check the water, reset, then test the hydraulic circuit | Middle to upper |
| Milk system blocked or froth poor | Clean the tubes and regulator, replace seals | Lower to middle |
| Grinder noisy or not grinding | Clear the object, check the burrs, replace if worn | Middle to upper |
| Coffee lukewarm | Test the heater and thermostat | Middle |
| Leaks under the machine | Trace the hose, valve or tank fitting | Lower to middle |
| Dead machine or a board fault | Check the plug and supply, then the board | Lower to upper |

A drip filter machine is cheap to replace, and when a repair would not be worth it we say so.

## Which Smeg do you have?

The model code is on the base or back of the machine. The ECF01 manual lists one code per colour, so the full code on the plate tells us more than the colour does.

| Model | Type | Manuals covered |
| --- | --- | --- |
| ECF01 | Retro espresso machine with a portafilter | The user manual: troubleshooting, lights, cleaning, safety |
| DCF02 | Drip filter machine | The user manual: troubleshooting, hardness setting, cleaning |
| BCC01, BCC02 | Fully automatic bean-to-cup | An excerpt of the BCC02 manual, Smeg's own overview page, and a retailer's blog on the lights |
| CMS6451X | Compact built-in fully automatic | The user manual: alarm messages, cleaning, installation, power |
| CMS4101 and other built-in | Compact built-in | Not quoted on this page |
| Capsule and manual espresso models | Other | Not quoted on this page |

The tables below say which model each rule comes from. A rule for one model may not hold on another.

## Who looks after a Smeg in the UAE?

Smeg's service page tells owners of home appliances to contact the dedicated spare parts and service department in their country. It links to service pages for about twenty countries, none of them in the Middle East, and lists general authorised-assistance numbers under the Italian prefix. It gives no UAE or Middle East contact. We are an independent technician and not an authorised service partner of Smeg. We therefore name none.

| Your situation | What we suggest |
| --- | --- |
| Under warranty, bought from a shop | Ask the shop who handles warranty service and keep the invoice |
| Built in by a kitchen supplier | Ask the kitchen supplier first. They may hold the warranty paperwork |
| Out of warranty | Message us. Most visits happen the day you message us |
| Bought abroad | Check the plate against Dubai's supply (see the power section) |

One Click Dubai is not a Smeg business. We cannot answer for the maker, and our repair is not a factory warranty.

## Smeg ECF01 espresso machine: what the manual lists as faults

The ECF01 manual's troubleshooting chapter is short and practical. We have paraphrased it and added what we do when the remedy does not work.

| Problem | Cause in the manual | Remedy in the manual | When we are called |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Coffee does not come out | Empty tank, blocked filter holes, tank not seated, or scale | Refill, clear the filter basket with a brush or pin, reseat the tank, or descale | It stays after all four |
| Coffee drips from the filter holder instead of the spouts | Holder not attached properly or dirty, a worn group gasket, or clogged spout holes | Re-attach the holder and turn it to the stop, clean it, have the gasket replaced at an authorised centre, or clean the spout holes | The gasket is worn |
| Filter holder will not latch | Basket overfilled | Use the supplied scoop and the correct basket | Never |
| All lights blinking | A possible fault | Unplug the machine and contact an authorised service centre | Always |
| Crema pale and runs out too fast | Under-tamped grounds, too little coffee, grind too coarse, or poor coffee | Tamp more firmly, use more coffee, use an espresso grind, or change the coffee | The technique is right and it stays |
| Crema dark and runs out too slowly | Over-tamped grounds, too much coffee, clogged group or basket, grind too fine, or scale | Tamp lighter, use less coffee, clean the outlet and basket, use an espresso grind, or descale | It stays |
| Steam or descaler button lights flash for a few seconds | Steam valve open, boiler too hot, or scale | Close the steam valve, cool the boiler, or descale | It repeats |
| Coffee not hot | The machine has stood idle, the group or basket is clogged, or the tank is not seated | Raise the coffee temperature in the programming menu, warm the cup with hot water, clear clogs, reseat the tank | It stays lukewarm |

The manual adds that after more than 30 minutes of inactivity the first cups may not be at the right temperature. Check the plate.

## Smeg ECF01: lights, cleaning and care

| Light or event | Meaning in the manual |
| --- | --- |
| Three button lights flash in sequence at power-on | Normal start-up |
| One-cup and two-cup lights flash | The machine is warming. It is ready when they stop |
| Steam or descaler button orange | Descaling is due |
| Three buttons flash after holding a button for ten seconds | Programming mode |
| Frother light flashing | The machine is preparing steam |
| Red floater up in the drip tray | The tray is too full. Empty and clean it and the cup tray |

- Wipe the body with a soft damp cloth once the machine has cooled, and avoid steam jets.
- Rinse the filter baskets under running water and clear the holes with a pin or brush.
- Clean the frother straight after use: release a little steam, unscrew and slide off the frother, remove the rubber nozzle, wash in warm water, check the hole is clear and reassemble.
- After every 200 coffees, flush about two cups of water through the group by pressing the coffee button with no coffee loaded.
- Clean the water tank monthly with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
- Avoid chlorine, ammonia or bleach on metal-finish parts, and abrasive or corrosive cleaners.

Steam, pods and the cup warmer have their own cautions: do not touch the cup warmer tray during use, and leave an inch of space at the sides and back and six inches above the machine.

## Smeg ECF01: baskets and scoop

The ECF01 manual's parts list shows three filters: a soft pod filter, a one-cup ground coffee filter and a two-cup ground coffee filter. It also lists one measuring and tamping scoop. The manual's introduction says the machine makes coffee from ground coffee or soft pods.

- Use the basket that matches the number of cups you are making.
- The manual's troubleshooting table links pale crema and dark crema to the coffee and how it is pressed in, so check the dose and tamp before suspecting the machine.
- A holder that will not latch is also a table entry. An overfilled or badly seated basket is the first thing to look at.

If the dose and tamp are right and the crema is still wrong, the group gasket, the basket or the pump needs a look. That is when a visit pays for itself.

## Keeping a short fault log

A few lines written over a week make a diagnosis faster than any description given from memory. The Smeg manuals give us fixed messages and light patterns to record, so the log can be exact.

- Write the message or light pattern word for word. On a CMS6451X that means text such as FILL TANK, INSERT INFUSER ASSEMBLY or GENERAL ALARM!. On a BCC02, name which alarm light is on and whether it is steady or flashing.
- Note which drink you had ordered when the message appeared, milk or plain coffee.
- Note what you did and whether the message cleared: tank refilled, grounds container emptied, infuser refitted, grind knob moved one click.
- Note the days since the last descale and the last infuser clean, because the manuals tie several messages to those intervals.

Send the log, a photo of the plate and your area on WhatsApp. We arrive knowing which parts to bring.

## Messages that look like faults but are not

Two Smeg messages come from the machine doing what the manual says. Knowing them saves a visit.

| What you see | What is happening | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| INSERT GROUNDS CONTAINER on a CMS6451X after a few days away | The container is full, or more than three days have passed since the last coffee | CMS6451X manual |
| DCF02 descaling icon on but coffee still brews | The red icon is a recommendation, and coffee can still be made while it is on | DCF02 manual |
| Machine stopped mid-cup on a BCC02 | The tank was out or low, or the door was open | BCC02 manual excerpt |

If the message stays after you have done what it asks, it is a fault and we should look at it.

## Grind direction on Smeg bean-to-cup machines

The two bean-to-cup documents give the same direction for a grind that is too fine. The BCC02 excerpt says to turn the knob clockwise to loosen the coffee grinders when coffee dispenses slowly. The CMS6451X manual says that for GROUND TOO FINE ADJUST MILL you turn the grinding adjustment knob one click clockwise towards 7.

- On the CMS6451X, turn the knob one click, then run hot water, as the manual says.
- Change one click at a time and brew a cup before moving again.
- If the message returns at a coarser setting, the cause is probably not the grind. Message us.

These are the two Smeg documents that gave a grind direction. For other bean-to-cup models, read your own manual before touching the knob.

## Smeg DCF02 drip filter machine: faults and settings

| Problem | Cause in the manual | Remedy in the manual |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Coffee does not come out | No water in the tank, or scale | Refill the tank, or descale |
| Slow dispensing | Scale | Descale |
| Acidic taste | Coffee stagnating in the circuits | Rinse the circuits as the manual describes |
| Overflow | Filter not seated, jug not under the outlet, jug lid missing, or too much coffee | Check all three and use no more than five level scoops in the permanent filter |
| Only water comes out | No ground coffee in the filter | Add the right amount |

If these steps do not cure the fault, the manual says to contact your local technical support centre.

### The indicators

- The descaling icon is red when descaling is recommended and flashes until the cycle ends. Coffee can still be made while it is on.
- A button LED flashing quickly means the machine is brewing.
- A button LED flashing slowly with the KEEP WARM icon lit means Keep Warm mode, which runs the plate for 40 minutes.
- One bean on the aroma icon is Delicate, two is Intense.

### Setting the water hardness on a DCF02

1. **Open the menu**: Hold the aroma button and the 4-cup button together for three seconds, then choose SE02.
2. **Choose the level**: The default is HA02, medium. Use the lever to pick HA01 soft, HA02 medium or HA03 hard.
3. **Save**: Press OK. The choice flashes for two seconds to confirm.

The machine decides when to ask for descaling from this setting, so a wrong hardness means the reminder comes too late or too early. Check the data plate.

## Smeg BCC bean-to-cup: the alarm lights

Smeg's BCC machines show their state with icons rather than numbered codes. Smeg's own overview says an icon lights on the control panel when attention is needed and that a dedicated alarm tells you when to descale. The detailed meanings below come from the BCC02 manual's excerpt and from a retailer's blog, Barista Life, which attributes its table to Smeg's manual. The second column of the table is the blog's reading, not a quotation from Smeg.

| Light | What it means | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Brewing group, flashing | The door is open, or the brewing group is missing or fitted wrongly | BCC02 manual excerpt |
| Tray alarm | The tray is missing or fitted wrongly. The machine is blocked until it is reassembled | BCC02 manual excerpt |
| All buttons flashing together | A hydraulic circuit error. Make sure the tank has water and wait for the circuit to reset. If it persists, call an authorised centre | BCC02 manual excerpt |
| Water tank, flashing | Tank missing, or water low | Retailer blog |
| No coffee, steady | Bean container at minimum or empty | Retailer blog |
| Grounds container, steady | Container full | Retailer blog |
| Grounds container, flashing | Container or internal drip tray missing or fitted wrongly | Retailer blog |
| Descaling, steady | Descaling recommended. Drinks continue for a limited number of cycles | Retailer blog |
| Descaling, flashing | All functions blocked until descaled | Retailer blog |

- Machine will not turn on: the manual's cause is a plug that is not fully connected.
- Machine stops while dispensing: the tank is out or the water is below the minimum, or the side door was opened. Fit the tank properly or fill it, or close the door.
- Coffee dispenses slowly: the grind is too fine. The manual says to turn the knob clockwise to loosen the grinders.
- Clean the brewing group at least weekly, always empty the grounds container, and clean the steam wand after every use.

A light that stays on after you have done what it asks can point to a sensor, switch or board. That is a visit. For descaling see our [guide](https://oneclickdubai.com/guides/how-to-descale-a-smeg-coffee-machine).

## Smeg CMS6451X built-in: the alarm messages

The built-in CMS6451X shows words, not icons, and its manual has a full table. These are the messages and what the manual says.

| Message | Cause in the manual | What the manual tells you to do | When we are called |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| FILL TANK | Tank empty or not seated | Fill it and push it in as far as it goes | A full, seated tank still shows it |
| GROUND TOO FINE ADJUST MILL | Grinding too fine, or air in the circuit | Turn the grinding knob one click clockwise towards 7, then insert the hot water spout and run water briefly | It returns at the coarser setting |
| INSERT WATER SPOUT | Spout not in | Insert it as far as it will go | It is in and the message stays |
| INSERT GROUNDS CONTAINER | Container too full, or more than three days since the last coffee | Empty, clean and replace it | It is empty and the message stays |
| INSERT MILK CONTAINER | Container not in | Push it in fully | It is in and the message stays |
| ADD PRE-GROUND COFFEE | Pre-ground selected with no coffee added, or the funnel is blocked | Add coffee, or clear the funnel with a knife | The funnel is clear |
| DESCALE! | Descaling is overdue | Descale as soon as possible | Descaling does not clear it |
| LESS COFFEE | Too much coffee was used | Choose a milder taste or reduce the pre-ground amount | Never |
| FILL BEANS CONTAINER | Beans have run out | Fill the container | Beans are in and the message stays |
| INSERT INFUSER ASSEMBLY | The infuser was not put back after cleaning | Refit it | It is fitted and the message stays |
| CLOSE DOOR | Service door open | Close it | It is closed and the message stays |
| GENERAL ALARM! | The inside is very dirty | Clean the inside thoroughly as the cleaning section shows; if it persists, contact customer services | It persists after a proper clean |

The manual says the grounds container must be emptied whenever the drip tray is removed. It also tells you that if the unit is faulty you should not attempt repairs, but switch it off at the main switch, unplug it and contact customer services.

## Cleaning the CMS6451X infuser and milk system

### The brew unit (infuser)

1. **Prepare**: Switch the machine off, open the service door and remove the drip tray and grounds container.
2. **Release**: Press the two red release buttons inward while pulling the infuser out. Do not force it.
3. **Soak and rinse**: Soak for about five minutes and rinse under the tap. The manual says not to use washing-up liquid, because it strips the lubricant from the piston and the infuser can seize.
4. **Refit**: Reinstall it and push until it clicks, and confirm both red buttons have snapped back out.

The manual asks for this at least once a month.

### The milk system

- Clean the milk tubes inside the milk container each time you prepare milk.
- Hold the CLEAN button on the lid for at least three seconds to run the internal cleaning cycle.
- For a full clean, remove the spout, intake tube and frothed milk regulator, wash them in hot water with mild detergent and check for residue.
- Put milk back in the fridge promptly. The manual says it should not sit out for more than 15 minutes.

### The drip tray

Empty it before the red level indicator rises above the cup tray. The manual warns that overflow can seep into the unit and the cabinet.

## Installing and powering a Smeg built-in

The CMS6451X manual gives installation rules that matter in Dubai kitchens, where a built-in coffee machine is normally fitted by the kitchen installer.

- A qualified professional must install it, following local regulations.
- It must sit in a column fixed firmly to the wall, with a gap at the bottom of the cabinet for ventilation.
- Furniture touching the unit must withstand 65 degrees Celsius.
- Do not install it where the room temperature can fall to 0 degrees or below, because water in the unit may freeze.
- It may sit above a built-in oven only if the oven has a rear cooling fan and a maximum power of 3 kilowatts. Over a warming drawer, the drawer must draw 500 watts or less.
- The cable must be long enough for the unit to be pulled out to refill beans, and the socket must stay accessible.
- Use an earthed socket rated at 10 amps or more, with an omnipolar switch having at least 3 millimetres contact separation. No multiple sockets or extension cords.

| Specification, CMS6451X | Figure in the manual |
| --- | --- |
| Voltage | 220 to 240 volts, 50 or 60 hertz, maximum 10 amps |
| Absorbed power | 1,350 watts |
| Pump pressure | 15 bar |
| Water tank | 1.7 litres |

Dubai's 230 volts at 50 hertz fits. The manual says the unit is for household use and not suitable for commercial use. A damaged plug or cable may be replaced only by customer services.

## Water hardness and the filter on a Smeg

- The CMS6451X manual says to set the water hardness as soon as possible. Dip the test strip in the water for a few seconds, wait about 30 seconds, count the red squares, then enter the menu, choose WATER HARDNESS and set the value to the count.
- Remove the water softener filter before descaling the CMS6451X.
- The BCC02 excerpt says the machine is factory set to hard water. The Smeg softener filter is optional and not supplied.
- On the DCF02, set SE02 to HA01, HA02 or HA03 (see above).

We quote no hardness figure for Dubai because it varies by building. A test strip gives you a number to use.

## Safety on a Smeg

- Never put the machine, cord or plug in water, and unplug before cleaning.
- Let the machine cool before cleaning it.
- Use only original spare parts. Parts from other makers are not to be used.
- Keep children under eight away, and do not let children play with it.
- Do not use the DCF02 jug if it is damaged or the handle is loose, and do not use the appliance if its surface is cracked.
- Fill the DCF02 tank before you put the plug in the socket.
- The steam wand stays hot after steam delivery.
- Do not run an espresso machine without water in the tank or without the tank in place.
- Descaler contains acids that can irritate skin and eyes.

These are the manuals' points. Your own manual has the full list.

## Parts we fit on Smeg machines

| Part | Job in the machine | What you notice when it wears |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Group gasket and shower screen | Seal the filter holder and spread the water | Drips around the holder |
| Infuser or brew unit | Press the coffee | Infuser alarms, wet grounds |
| Grinder burrs and motor | Grind the beans | Noise, no grinding |
| Pump and flow meter | Move and measure the water | No flow, slow flow |
| Heater and thermostat | Heat the water | Lukewarm coffee |
| Milk tubes, regulator and seals | Draw and froth milk | Weak froth, leaks |
| Tank fitting, float and sensors | Hold and detect water | FILL TANK with a full tank |
| Door, tray and infuser switches | Report what is in place | CLOSE DOOR or INSERT messages when all is fine |
| Steam valve and wand | Make steam | Weak steam, leaks |
| Control board and display | Run the machine | All lights flashing, dead buttons |

All parts are genuine. If an older Smeg needs a part that is no longer made, we tell you before we quote.

## Caring for a Smeg in a Dubai kitchen

This routine is ours, based on the manuals' intervals.

| When | Job |
| --- | --- |
| Every day | Fresh water in the tank, empty the tray and grounds container, wipe the steam wand or frother after use |
| Each time you make milk | Clean the milk tubes or frother (built-in and espresso) |
| Weekly | Clean the brewing group or filter baskets |
| Monthly | Clean the infuser on a built-in, wipe the tank |
| Every 200 coffees (ECF01) | Flush the group with about two cups of water |
| When the machine asks | Descale, following our guide |

A calendar reminder takes the guesswork out. The manuals say to descale on the machine's signal.

## What a Smeg visit includes

1. **The story**: Tell us what the machine did, which lights or words showed, and when it began.
2. **Plate and supply**: We read the model code and check the socket, plug and supply.
3. **The manual's first causes**: Tank, filter, grind, infuser, door and tray come first, as the tables do.
4. **Tests**: We test the pump, grinder, heater and milk system as the fault needs.
5. **The price**: You hear it before anything is fitted.
6. **A working cup**: We brew and froth, and look for leaks before we leave.

If the machine has to leave your home, we give the reason and a return date first.

## Repair or replace a Smeg?

Smeg gives no repair-or-replace rule, so we use our own: price a new machine of the same type and question any repair that costs half as much.

| Fault | Usual advice | Reason |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Group gasket or spout holes | Repair | Cheap and quick |
| Infuser or door switch | Repair | Small parts |
| Milk tubes and seals | Repair | Wear parts |
| Pump or grinder on a bean-to-cup | Repair | Below a new machine |
| Board on an older built-in | Compare | May approach a new price |
| Most faults on a basic DCF02 | Compare | New ones cost little |

If a new machine is smarter, we tell you and only the diagnosis is charged.

## Before you message us

1. **Plug**: Check it is fully in the socket.
2. **Tank**: Full, seated, and the machine is not below its minimum.
3. **Parts in place**: Door shut, tray, grounds container, infuser or filter holder all fitted properly.
4. **Grind**: Make it a little coarser if coffee drips slowly.
5. **Descale**: If the machine has asked, do it first.

If it is still faulty, switch off and message us.

## Information that helps us book you in

- The model code on the plate.
- The words or lights on the display, and whether they are steady or flashing.
- When you last descaled and what you used.
- Whether it is freestanding or built in.
- Where you bought it.

Say which steps from this page you have already tried.

## While you wait for the technician

If a Smeg leaks or all its lights flash, switch it off, unplug it and let it cool. Empty the drip tray and the grounds container.

- Photograph the lights or the message exactly as they show, because Smeg's machines report their state through lights and icons.
- On a built-in machine, switch off at the isolator or breaker for that appliance rather than only at the front.
- Do not remove the infuser or any part while a programme is running.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the cost of a Smeg coffee machine repair?

AED 100 plus VAT to diagnose, then mostly AED 80 to AED 400 for the repair, agreed before we start.

### Is there a Smeg service centre in Dubai?

Smeg's service page lists service departments for about twenty countries and none in the Middle East. We are independent of Smeg and can usually attend the same day.

### How do I descale my Smeg?

The steps differ by model. Our [guide to descaling a Smeg machine](https://oneclickdubai.com/guides/how-to-descale-a-smeg-coffee-machine) covers the ECF01, DCF02 and bean-to-cup machines.

### Why does my Smeg espresso machine drip around the filter holder?

The ECF01 manual lists a holder that is not attached properly or is dirty, a worn group gasket and clogged spout holes.

### Why are all the lights on my Smeg flashing?

On the ECF01, the manual says to unplug the machine and contact an authorised service centre. On the BCC02, it is a hydraulic circuit error: make sure the tank has water and wait for it to reset.

### What does INSERT INFUSER ASSEMBLY mean on my Smeg built-in?

The CMS6451X manual says the infuser was not put back after cleaning. Refit it until it clicks.

### Can I wash the Smeg infuser with washing-up liquid?

No. The CMS6451X manual says detergent strips the lubricant from the piston and the infuser can seize.

### What does GENERAL ALARM mean?

The CMS6451X manual says the inside is very dirty. Clean it thoroughly, and contact customer services if the message persists.

### How do I set the water hardness on a Smeg DCF02?

Hold the aroma and 4-cup buttons for three seconds, choose SE02, pick HA01, HA02 or HA03 with the lever and press OK.

### Why is my Smeg coffee dispensing slowly?

On the BCC02 the cause is a grind that is too fine, and on the ECF01 and DCF02 the manuals also list scale.

### Does a Smeg work on Dubai's supply?

The CMS6451X is rated 220 to 240 volts at 50 or 60 hertz, which fits. Check the plate.

### Is it worth repairing a Smeg?

A gasket, infuser, milk or pump fault usually is. For a board on an older built-in, or a basic drip machine, compare the quote with a new one.
