How to Descale a Nescafé Dolce Gusto Machine

Overview

A Nescafé Dolce Gusto machine is the easiest kind of coffee machine to descale and the one most often skipped. The job is a few minutes of work and about half an hour of waiting: mix the descaling solution, run half of it through, wait two minutes, run the rest, then flush the machine twice with clean water. What trips people up is that the details change from one model to the next. Some machines have a lever and some have a button. Some warn you when descaling is due and some do not.

This guide follows Dolce Gusto's own descaling instructions for the general method, and adds the model-specific steps we could confirm for the Mini Me and the Esperta. It explains the signs that a machine needs descaling, how often to do it, how to clean the parts you can reach, what goes wrong and what to do when it does.

If the machine still will not pour after a proper descale, the fault is a part and not scale. For a repair, see Nescafé Dolce Gusto machine repair in Dubai. For other makes, there is a general guide to descaling a coffee machine.

How to descale a Dolce Gusto machine: the short answer

1
Switch off and empty

Switch the machine off, empty the water tank and take out any capsule.

2
Mix the descaler

Dolce Gusto's page says to mix fresh drinking water with the Dolce Gusto descaler at a ratio of 1 to 10. For example, 50 ml of descaler to 500 ml of water.

3
Fit the rinsing tool

If your model came with a rinsing tool, put it in the capsule holder. Otherwise use an empty capsule holder.

4
Fill the tank and place a cup

Pour the solution into the tank, put the tank back and set a large empty container under the spout.

5
Enter descaling mode if your model needs it

On models without a descaling alert, hold the power button for at least 5 seconds until it blinks.

6
Run half the solution through

Set the lever to hot, or press the coffee button if there is no lever. Stop after about half the solution has come out, unless the machine stops itself.

7
Wait two minutes

Let the solution work on the scale.

8
Rinse the tank and run clean water through

Refill with clean water and run it the same way until the tank is empty.

9
Switch off, rinse the parts and refill

Rinse and dry the capsule holder and the rinsing tool, then fill the tank with fresh water.

The steps above are Dolce Gusto's general method. The model differences, the lights and the rinses are below.

Signs that a Dolce Gusto needs descaling

Dolce Gusto's own page names the first three signs below. The rest are common scale symptoms on any machine.

How often to descale

SourceWhat it says
Dolce Gusto's descaling pageAbout every 3 months. Daily users may need it more often
Esperta instruction manualAt least every 3 to 4 months
A retailer guide for the Mini MeEvery 3 months or every 300 coffees, whichever comes first. More often for heavy use and hard water

The three sources agree on roughly every three months. The retailer guide adds a rule for heavy use: five to eight coffees a day every two months, and eight to ten a day monthly. That is the retailer's advice, and Dolce Gusto does not publish those figures, but it fits how scale builds: more water through the machine means more scale.

If your model has a descaling alert, follow it. If it does not, write the date on a label under the machine and set a reminder. A machine without an alert is a machine that nobody remembers to descale.

Which Dolce Gusto do you have?

Dolce Gusto sells many models, and its descaling page says the details differ. These are the differences that change what you do.

DifferenceWhat it changesHow to find out
Descaling alert or notSome machines, such as the Genio S, light up when descaling is due. Others, such as the Mini Me, per Dolce Gusto's page, do notLook for a descale light in the manual. If there is none, keep the date yourself
Lever or buttonLever machines use HOT and COLD positions. Button machines use the coffee buttonLook at the top or front of the machine
Volume dialMachines with a dial are set to maximum for descaling. Some stop automaticallyLook for a dial near the lever or button
Rinsing toolSome models include a funnel or tool that sits in the capsule holderCheck the box and the manual
DisplayMachines like the Esperta count down on a bar displayLook at the front

The model name is on the base of the machine and on the back. Search it with the word manual and you will find the maker's own steps. We give the general method first, and then the two models we could confirm.

What you need

Dolce Gusto descaler, or the descaling kit named in your manual. Dolce Gusto's page gives the 1 to 10 dilution for its descaler. Use the dilution on your own pack.
Fresh drinking water for the solution and for the rinses.
An empty container under the spout. A retailer guide for the Mini Me suggests one of 1 litre or more.
The rinsing tool, if your model came with one. Keep it somewhere safe, because people lose it.
A soft sponge and mild washing-up liquid for the tank and the removable parts.
A towel or tray, because descaler can mark worktops.
Your manual, or its web page open on your phone.

The whole job takes about thirty minutes. Do not start it when you are about to leave, because you will want to stay near the machine.

Dolce Gusto's general descaling method

This is the sequence on Dolce Gusto's own page. It applies to many models, with the differences in the next table.

1
Switch off and prepare

Switch the machine off, empty the water tank and remove any capsule.

2
Fit the rinsing tool

If your model has one, place it in the capsule holder.

3
Pour in the solution

Mix the descaler with water at 1 to 10, pour it into the tank, put the tank back and put an empty capsule holder in the machine. Place a cup underneath.

4
Enter descaling mode

On models without a descaling alert, hold the power button for at least 5 seconds, until it blinks orange.

5
Start the flow

Set the lever to hot, or press the coffee button if there is no lever. Set any volume dial to maximum.

6
Stop at half

Stop once about half of the solution has come out, unless the machine stops by itself. Wait two minutes.

7
Finish the solution

Run the rest of the solution through in the same way.

8
Rinse with clean water

Rinse the tank, refill it with clean water, and run it through the machine the same way until the tank is empty.

9
Switch off and clean

Switch the machine off, then rinse and dry the capsule holder and the rinsing tool.

10
Refill

Fill the tank with fresh water. The machine is ready to brew.

Model featureWhat to do differently
Lever machineSet the lever to hot to start. Some return to neutral by themselves, and on others you must return it by hand
Button machinePress the coffee button to start
Machine with volume dialSet the dial to maximum. Some stop automatically
Machine with a descaling alertFollow the manual for entering the mode. The alert clears when the job is done
Machine without an alertHold the power button for at least 5 seconds to enter the mode

Dolce Gusto's page does not mention vinegar or other home descalers, and it points to the model-specific guide or the manual for details. Use the maker's descaler.

Mini Me: a worked example

The Mini Me is a small manual machine, and the steps below come from a retailer walk-through for it. Dolce Gusto's own page uses the Mini Me as an example of a machine with no descaling alert. The retailer guide says the Mini Me's light turns orange when descaling is due, so the two sources differ on the alert. Check your manual.

1
Prepare

Empty the drip tray and confirm the last capsule is out. Place an empty container of 1 litre or more under the spout.

2
Mix and fill

Fill the tank with about 500 ml of clean water plus descaling solution, mixed thoroughly. Make enough to fill the tank completely.

3
Fit the funnel

Insert the plastic descaling funnel, or the item the manual names, into the capsule holder.

4
Enter the mode

Press and hold the power button for at least 5 seconds until the light blinks. The retailer guide says green, and Dolce Gusto's page says orange. Hold until it blinks.

5
Hot descale

Push the lever to HOT. The machine runs for about two minutes, then stops.

6
Wait two minutes

Let the solution work. The power light flashes while you wait.

7
Hot rinse

Push the lever to HOT and run for two minutes using clean water.

8
Cold rinse

Push the lever to COLD and run for two minutes.

9
Clean up

Remove the funnel, rinse the capsule holder and put it back. Refill the tank with fresh water and wipe the outside.

The retailer guide advises against vinegar and against baking soda. It warns that vinegar can loosen scale in flakes that clog the machine, and that some descalers contain caustic chemicals, so read the label.

Esperta: a worked example

The Esperta has a bar display that counts down. The steps below come from its instruction manual, which says to descale at least every three to four months.

1
Empty the capsule bin

Take out the used capsules.

2
Fill the tank

Fill with fresh drinking water up to MAX, then add descaling liquid according to the descaling kit's manual.

3
Start the hot rinse

Press the hot water button. The bar display counts down. Wait until the machine stops.

4
Continue with cold

Press the cold water button. The bar display counts down again.

5
Switch off

Switch the machine off and wait until it returns to normal operation.

6
Empty the capsule bin again

Remove and empty the capsule bin.

7
Refill

Refill the tank with drinking water and put it back on the machine.

8
Reattach the drip tray

Then clean the outside with a soft damp cloth and dry it.

During the first rinse, the bar display and the power button blink green when the machine stops.
At the end of the cold water rinse, the power button lights red and the bar display counts up.
Follow the instructions in the descaling kit's manual for the amount of liquid.
Do not use vinegar. Do not press the power button during the descaling cycle.
Avoid letting descaling liquid touch any part of the machine other than the tank and the water path.

The manual page does not give a quantity of descaling liquid. The kit's own instructions do, so read them.

Genio S and other machines with a descaling alert

Dolce Gusto's page names the Genio S as an example of a machine that lights up when descaling is due.

Find the descaling section of your manual and follow it. The page will show the buttons and the lights.
The general method above shows the stages the machine will go through. solution, wait, rinse, rinse.
When the alert clears after the programme finishes, the job is done. If it does not clear, the cycle was interrupted.
Lumio, Piccolo and other models also have their own manuals. Search the model name and the word descaling.
If you cannot find the manual, message us the model name and we will tell you the sequence.

Our Dolce Gusto repair page lists the models and the lights, and explains which lights mean descaling and which mean a fault.

Mixing the solution: the 1 to 10 ratio worked out

Dolce Gusto's page gives the ratio for its own descaler: one part descaler to ten parts water, with 50 ml of descaler to 500 ml of water as the example. Use the figure on your own pack, but the arithmetic is the same whichever tank you have.

Water in the tankDescaler at 1 to 10Total solution
500 ml50 ml550 ml
600 ml60 ml660 ml
800 ml80 ml880 ml
1 litre100 ml1.1 litres

Check the maximum line in your tank before you pour. The solution must stay below it. The retailer's Mini Me guide mixes about 500 ml of water with the descaler and aims to fill the tank, so match the total to your tank and keep the ratio.

Mix the solution in a jug and stir it before it goes into the tank. A solution mixed in the tank is not always even.

The times are our estimate for the general method. Your model's manual gives its own figures.

A Dolce Gusto in an office, a rental or a holiday home

Put the descale date and the model name on a label stuck to the machine.
Appoint someone responsible. A shared machine is descaled late because everyone assumes someone else did it.
Keep a spare bottle of descaler and the rinsing tool in a drawer near the machine.
Before a holiday-home or rental guest arrives, descale the machine if it has sat unused for months, and make a test drink.
Empty the tank before a long absence, so no water stands in the machine.
In a busy office, use the heavy-use intervals from the retailer guide as a sensible starting point.

We can descale and service Dolce Gusto machines in offices and rentals on a regular visit.

Buying a second-hand Dolce Gusto

Ask the seller when it was last descaled. If they cannot say, assume never.
Descale it before regular use, following the steps above.
Check the capsule holder for cracks and a worn seal.
Run a tank of water through the machine and watch the flow. A weak or spluttering flow suggests heavy scale or a failing pump.
Make sure the rinsing tool is included if your model uses one.
Confirm the voltage on the plate suits the UAE supply.

A second-hand machine that passes these checks is a good buy. One that fails them may not be worth the repair.

Why capsule machines scale up so quickly

A capsule machine pushes a small volume of water through a compact heater at speed. There is not much water in the machine at any moment, so a thin layer of scale can matter more than it would in a large boiler.

A thin coating on the heater slows heat-up and cools the drink.
Scale in narrow channels cuts the flow, so the cup fills with less coffee.
The pump works harder against the restriction and gets louder.
Flakes can reach the capsule holder and the needle and block it.

This is why the interval matters more on a capsule machine than on a filter machine. The maker's three months is a sensible guide, and heavy use shortens it.

After milk capsules and sweet drinks

Dolce Gusto's page describes a routine rinse: run hot water through an empty capsule holder for 30 to 60 seconds, then empty the container. Milk and sugar residue is the reason it matters.

Run the hot rinse after milk capsules, which leave a film in the holder.
Rinse the capsule holder under the tap when it feels sticky.
Wipe the drip area so sugar does not dry into a crust.
Empty the used-capsule container daily if it is a heavy-use machine.
Do this in addition to descaling. It does not replace it.

A machine that tastes of yesterday's chocolate drink needs rinsing, not descaling.

Finding Dolce Gusto's own instructions for your model

Dolce Gusto's website has a cleaning and descaling section, and its page says to check the model-specific guide or the manual because the steps differ. The quickest way to the right page is the model name.

1
Find the model name

It is on the base of the machine and on the back.

2
Search the name with the word manual

For example, a model name followed by manual or descaling.

3
Open the descaling page

Check it against the general method above.

4
Note the lights

The light patterns are in the manual, and they differ by model.

5
Message us if you are stuck

Send the model name and a photo of the machine and we will point you to the right steps.

A manual from the maker beats any third-party guide, including this one, for your exact model.

Rinsing: the part that decides the taste

Rinse the tank by hand with clean water before you fill it for the rinse. It still holds solution.
Run a full tank of clean water through the machine, hot and then cold if your model has both settings.
Smell the water. A sharp smell means descaler is left.
Rinse the capsule holder and the rinsing tool, and dry them.
Make one drink with no capsule, then one with a capsule, and taste it.
If the taste is sharp, run another tank of clean water through.

Descaling solution left in the machine tastes sour and is not meant to be drunk. The extra rinse costs two minutes.

Cleaning between descales

Dolce Gusto's page also covers routine cleaning, and it is simple.

PartHow to clean itNotes
Water tankWash by hand with a soft sponge and mild washing-up liquidDo not scrub hard. The page warns that scrubbing can scratch the tank
Capsule holderRinse under running water and dryRun hot water through an empty capsule holder for 30 to 60 seconds, then empty the container
Drip tray and gridWash the tray. Hand-wash a metal gridCheck your manual before using a dishwasher
Outside of the machineSwitch off first, then wipe with a soft damp clothDry with a soft cloth
Rinsing toolRinse and dryKeep it with the machine

Routine cleaning removes coffee residue. It does not remove scale, and descaling does not clean the capsule holder. A machine needs both.

The capsule holder and the cleaning pin

Searches for a Dolce Gusto cleaning pin or cleaning kit usually mean the small tool or needle used to clear the capsule holder. Not every model comes with one, so check your model's manual for the part.

If your machine came with a cleaning tool, use that one, as the manual shows. Do not poke the holder with a pin or a paperclip that was not made for it.
If the holder is blocked, rinse it under hot running water first. Coffee grounds and scale are the usual cause.
Check that you have removed the capsule and that nothing is jammed in the holder.
If coffee only drips, run a descale before you assume the holder is faulty.
A holder that is cracked or bent needs replacing.

A needle that is clean and a tank that is full, with no flow, points to scale or a pump fault. Descale once, then book a visit if it persists.

Mistakes that damage a Dolce Gusto

MistakeWhy it matters
Using vinegarThe Esperta manual says do not. A retailer guide says it can loosen scale in flakes that clog the machine
Using baking sodaA retailer guide advises against it
Pressing the power button mid-cycleThe Esperta manual says do not press it during the descaling cycle
Skipping the two minute waitThe solution needs time to work, as Dolce Gusto's steps state
Running the whole tank through without the waitThe general method says to stop at half and wait
Skipping the clean water rinseLeaves solution in the lines
Scrubbing the tank hardDolce Gusto's page warns that it can scratch the tank
Losing the rinsing toolSome models need it for the process
Ignoring the intervalDolce Gusto says about every three months

Leaving it for a year is the mistake that costs most. These machines are inexpensive, so owners shrug when they slow down, but a descale often brings them back.

Troubleshooting a descale

The machine will not enter descaling mode

Hold the power button for the full five seconds on models that need it.
Check that the tank is in place and holds solution.
Check that a capsule is not in the holder.
Check the manual, because your model may use a different sequence.

The machine stops partway

The tank is empty. Refill with the right mixture or clean water.
On some models the machine stops by itself. Wait two minutes, then continue as the steps say.
The container is full. Empty it.

No flow during descaling

Check that the tank is seated and full. If the pump hums but nothing comes out, scale may be blocking the lines. Wait the two minutes, then try again. If the pump is silent, stop and book a visit.

The descale light stays on

The cycle did not finish or the machine did not register it. Run the programme again from the start. If the light stays after two full descales, the machine needs a technician.

Coffee tastes sharp or sour afterwards

Run two or three more tanks of clean water through, hot and then cold.

It leaks afterwards

Descaling does not cause leaks, but it can reveal a worn seal. Switch off, unplug and check whether the tank is seated. If water appears from beneath the machine or at the capsule holder, book a visit.

Scale, water and what you pour in the tank

Use fresh drinking water, and empty the tank if the machine will sit unused for days.
Hard water means more scale and shorter intervals. The retailer guide says hard water needs more frequent descaling.
A filter jug reduces scale but does not remove it. Descale anyway.
Machines in offices make more drinks and need descaling more often.
Rinse the tank when you refill it, so old water does not sit in it.

Descaling every three months costs a pack of descaler and half an hour. Ignoring it for a year can turn a cheap job into a repair.

Repair or replace a Dolce Gusto

Dolce Gusto machines are among the least expensive capsule machines, and that changes the repair maths.

Fault after a proper descaleOur view
Flow and heat back to normalNo repair needed
Capsule holder cracked or bentReplace the holder
Leak at the tank seat or a hoseRepair if the part is cheap
Pump failedCompare the quote with a new machine
Heater or control board failedUsually cheaper to replace the machine
Machine over several years old with multiple faultsReplace

Our rule is the same for every machine. When a quote approaches half the price of a comparable new one, we recommend replacing it. For a low-cost capsule machine, that happens sooner. We would rather tell you so than fit a part to a machine that is not worth it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I descale a Dolce Gusto machine?

Mix Dolce Gusto descaler with water at 1 to 10, run half through, wait two minutes, run the rest, then rinse with clean water until the tank is empty. Your model may need a button sequence to start.

How often should I descale a Dolce Gusto?

About every three months, according to Dolce Gusto's page. The Esperta manual says at least every three to four months.

What descaler do I use?

Dolce Gusto descaler, or the kit named in your manual. Dolce Gusto's page gives a 1 to 10 dilution for its own product.

Can I use vinegar?

No. The Esperta manual says not to use vinegar, and a retailer guide warns it can clog the machine.

How do I put a Dolce Gusto into descaling mode?

On models without a descaling alert, hold the power button for at least 5 seconds until it blinks. Other models use a different sequence, so check the manual.

How long does it take?

About thirty minutes, including the two minute waits and the rinses.

Why does my Dolce Gusto only drip?

A blocked capsule holder or scale are the usual causes. Clean the holder, then descale.

Does my machine have a descale alert?

Some do, like the Genio S. Others, like the Mini Me according to Dolce Gusto's page, do not. Check your manual.

Where do I find a Dolce Gusto cleaning pin?

Only some models include a cleaning tool. Use the tool supplied for your machine and do not use improvised pins.

Can I put the tank in the dishwasher?

Check your manual first. Dolce Gusto's page warns against scrubbing the tank and says to wash it by hand with a soft sponge.

The descale light will not go off. What now?

Run the programme again from the start. If it stays on after two full descales, the machine needs a technician.

Should I rinse after milk capsules?

Yes. Dolce Gusto's page suggests running hot water through an empty capsule holder for 30 to 60 seconds as routine cleaning.

How much descaler do I use for a 1 litre tank?

At Dolce Gusto's 1 to 10 ratio for its own descaler, 100 ml in 1 litre. Check your pack and keep the total below the maximum line.

Does descaling fix a machine that will not pour at all?

It fixes scale blockages. If the machine still will not pour after a proper descale, the pump or a part is at fault.

Can I descale a Dolce Gusto I bought second-hand?

Yes, and you should before regular use, since you do not know its history.

Who repairs Dolce Gusto machines in Dubai?
