Overview

Franke makes the fully automatic coffee machines that sit behind many hotel breakfast rooms, office pantries and busy cafés: the A400, A600, A800 and A1000, with the Mytico and Flair lines above and beside them. They grind, brew and froth milk at the touch of a screen, and they depend on daily cleaning more than most machines do. When one stops, the usual causes are a milk system that has not been cleaned as the maker requires, a filter or water problem, a grounds container that was not emptied, or a part that has finally worn.

This page sets out what Franke's own documents say: the A400 and A800 user manuals, the A400 and A1000 product leaflets, and Franke's customer-service page. It covers display messages, taste faults, the cleaning schedule, water quality, power supply and what a repair visit involves. It also says plainly where those documents give no answer, because a wrong error code on a commercial machine costs a café a morning.

Our technicians come to your café, hotel or office, find the fault, quote the price before any part is fitted and repair on site wherever the machine allows. Cafés and hotels get priority booking.

Which Franke do you have?

The name is on the front or the screen, and the full model code is on the rating plate. Franke writes the milk and cleaning options into the code, which is why two A400s can behave differently. The leaflets define the letters like this.

CodeMeaning, according to Franke's leaflets
FMFoamMaster: hot and cold milk and milk foam with consistency you set
MSMilk System: hot and cold milk and warm foam, dosed by a milk pump (A400 leaflet)
CMCleanMaster: fully automatic cleaning with an integrated cleaning cartridge
ECEasyClean: automatic cleaning with the cleaning fluid added by hand (A400 leaflet)
ModelWhat the leaflets sayNotes
A400One 2 kg, two 1.2 kg or two 0.6 kg lockable bean hoppers; up to two grinders; 4.0 litre built-in tank on most versions, 3.0 litre drip trayAbout 140 espresso and 93 cappuccino per hour with one grinder; 186 espresso and 156 cappuccino in parallel
A600In Franke's new A Line, described in trade press as engineered in SwitzerlandNot stated
A800In the same A Line. Its user manual text is covered belowFranke's UAE site shows both in a hotel case study
A1000One to three grinders with ceramic disks; 2 kg, 1.2 kg and 0.6 kg hoppers; one or two powder units160 espresso and 156 cappuccino per hour single, 238 and 224 parallel

Franke's leaflets do not agree on every detail between models, so check your own rating plate and manual before you rely on a figure here.

Who looks after a Franke in the UAE?

Franke's customer-service page describes a network of technicians for maintenance and repairs, with parts replacement and machine maintenance handled by certified partners, plus out-of-hours support and technician training. The page gives no phone number and no regional contact list. Its only contact route is a form, and its Australian version lists nothing for the Middle East.

Franke's own pages and trade coverage of its Middle East launches name no UAE service partner. Trade coverage reports that Franke showed the Mytico at GulfHost Dubai and launched the A Line for Middle East hospitality, and Franke's UAE site carries a hotel case study, but none of those pages names a local service partner or an office address. We therefore do not name one.

Franke display messages and colour codes

The A400 manual and the A800 manual text list the messages below. The A800 page directs you to its troubleshooting chapter for the remedies. The remedies in the table come from the A400 manual, and the last column says what we do when the remedy fails.

Serious errorA fault the user cannot clearSwitch off at the main switch, wait a minute, switch on, check the power supply, then contact your service technicianAlways, if it returns

Franke also colours its error messages. The manuals describe four levels: a temporary interruption, a fault where the system is still fully functional, a fault with limited functionality, and one where resources are locked. On the A800, tapping an illuminated dashboard symbol shows more detail and instructions.

We do not publish numbered error codes for the A600, A800 or A1000. If your screen shows a number, send us a photo and the model code and we will look it up with the manual in front of us.

Coffee tastes wrong: what Franke's manuals say

Franke's troubleshooting table in the A400 and A800 manuals is the part most café staff need. It matches the taste to a cause and a remedy. We have grouped the entries and added what we look at when the manual's own remedy does not work.

The first-line fixes are free. Most taste complaints on a Franke are settings or cleaning, and a visit is only needed once they have been tried.

Cleaning a Franke: daily, weekly and by the interval

The A400 manual's cleaning schedule is short and strict, and the A800 text agrees on the key points. A missed clean is the first thing we look for on a milk or taste complaint.

WhenWhat the manuals say
At least dailyClean the machine and its add-on units. Do not operate it again until it has been cleaned as instructed (A400)
At least dailyEmpty and clean the grounds container to prevent mould
WeeklyClean the bean hopper, powder hopper and brewing module as the supplied cleaning instructions show (A400)
After more than two days unusedRinse the machine before use (A800)
Annually or every 30,000 productsService by a technician (A400)

The rinse and clean programmes

On the A400 you reach them from the maintenance level: tap the Franke logo, enter the PIN and go to Cleaning and Maintenance. The menu offers Clean Coffee Machine, Rinse Coffee Machine, Wipe Protection and Filter water quantity. Hot liquid and steam come out of the spouts and nozzles during cleaning, so keep your hands clear.

What not to use

Do not spray or hose the machine. The A800 manual says to avoid water jets and high-pressure cleaners.
Do not pour or spray liquid on the A400. If liquid gets in, or it leaks, disconnect the power.
Use Franke's own milk system cleaner only. Both manuals say other cleaning agents can leave residue in the milk system.
Cleaning tablets and descaler can irritate skin and eyes. Follow the product information and wash your hands.
The A800 manual says children may not carry out any cleaning.

If your daily cleaning is being skipped because the screen takes too long or the staff change often, tell us. We can show your team the sequence on your own machine during a visit.

Franke milk system problems

Franke's manuals are unusually firm about milk. Both say to use only pre-cooled milk at 2 to 5 degrees Celsius and only Franke's cleaning product. The A400 manual adds that you clean the milk container, the parts that touch milk and the cooling chamber when you empty the cooling unit.

SymptomLikely causeWhat we check
Milk will not frothMilk too warm, dirty milk path or an air leakThe milk temperature, the cooling unit, the pump and the seals
Foam is weak or collapsesMilk path not cleaned to the scheduleHoses, valves and the foam head
Milk comes out in spurtsPartly blocked line or a worn sealThe path from the container to the outlet
Cleaning does not finishWrong cleaner, empty cleaning cartridge or tankThe cleaner type and the cartridge or dosing bottle
Sour smell in the cooling chamberMilk residueDeep clean the cooling chamber and container

The accessories differ by variant. The A400 leaflet and manual list a cleaning container, dosing bottle, tablets, microfibre cloth and brush set for the MS EC version, and tablets, a cloth and brushes for the FM CM version. Your machine's variant decides what you should have in the cupboard.

This table is our own working list, not Franke's. Franke's manuals give the milk rules above and no fault table for the milk path.

Water, filters and descaling

The two manuals give different water specifications. Keep to the one for your model.

ItemA400 manualA800 manual text
Total hardness4 to 8 degrees dH, 70 to 140 ppmMaximum 70 mg CaO per litre (7 dH)
Carbonate hardness3 to 6 degrees dHNot stated
pH6.5 to 7.5Ideal pH 7
Other limitsChlorine under 0.5 mg/l, chloride under 30 mg/l, iron under 0.3 mg/l, TDS 30 to 150 ppmNot stated
Water pressureNot stated0.36 to 8.0 bar
The A400 manual says water should not come from a household decalcification system.
The A800 manual wants a fixed water connection with a shut-off valve, a check valve and a filter that can be inspected.
The A1000 leaflet gives mains pressure of 0.8 to 8.0 bar, flow above 0.1 litres a second and water below 25 degrees Celsius.

Changing the filter on an A400

1
Remove the tank

Take out the tank and empty it.

2
Remove the old cartridge

Unscrew it counterclockwise and dispose of it.

3
Clean the tank

Wash the tank before you fit the new cartridge.

4
Fit the new cartridge

Prepare it as the cartridge instructions say, install it and refill the tank.

5
Let it rinse

The filter rinse runs automatically.

Descaling

Franke's filters and cleaning tablets are part of its system, and the safest course is to follow the procedure in your own manual and to ask us if it is missing. For the general idea behind descaling any coffee machine, see our descaling guide.

Power, plugs and installation

Franke sells the same models with several electrical set-ups, and the supply must match the plate. The A1000 leaflet lists these options.

SupplyPowerFuse
380 to 415 V, 3 phase plus neutral, 50 or 60 Hz6.7 to 7.9 kW16 A
220 to 240 V, single phase, 50 or 60 Hz2.6 to 3 kW16 A
220 to 240 V, single phase, 50 or 60 Hz4.4 to 5.2 kW30 A
220 to 240 V, 3 phase without neutral5.6 to 7.9 kW30 A
200 to 220 V, 2 phase or 3 phase, 50 or 60 Hz4.5 to 8.1 kW30 A
Dubai's supply is 230 volts single phase and 400 volts three phase at 50 hertz. A 380 to 415 volt A1000 fits the three-phase supply, and a 220 to 240 volt version fits the single-phase one.
A 30 amp single-phase machine needs a circuit rated for it. A café on a shared supply should check the load before adding a second machine.
A machine made for 200 to 220 volts or 60 hertz does not match Dubai's supply without a transformer or a different version.
The A400 leaflet lists a 120 volt cooling unit for the US market, which does not suit the UAE.

If a new unit has been installed and trips the breaker, the supply is the first thing we measure.

Safety on a commercial Franke

Keep hands away from spouts and nozzles during rinsing and cleaning. Hot liquid and steam are released.
Do not operate the A400 until it has been cleaned as instructed.
Never spray or pour liquid onto the machine, and disconnect the power if liquid enters.
Keep cleaner out of drinks and avoid skin and eye contact.
Do not use pressure cleaners on the A800.
In a serious error, switch off at the main switch and wait a minute before restarting, as the A400 manual says.

These are the points in the manuals. Your own manual has the full list.

What a Franke visit includes

1
Questions

We ask what the screen said, when it began and when the machine was last cleaned and serviced.

2
Supply and plate

We read the plate, check the supply and look at the water connection and filter.

3
Cleaning record

We look at the milk system, the brewing module and the grounds container, because the manuals tie most faults to cleaning.

4
Tests

We run the grinder, pump, heater and milk path as far as the fault needs.

5
One price

You get a quote before anything is fitted.

6
Proof

After the repair we pour a coffee and a milk drink, check for leaks and walk your staff through the daily clean.

A job that cannot be finished on site goes to the workshop. We tell you why, and how long it will take, before we collect the machine.

Repair or replace a Franke?

Get the quote, price a new machine of the same class, and think hard when the repair reaches about half of it. A café that depends on the machine every morning should weigh downtime as well.

A daily routine for a café or hotel Franke

This routine is ours, built on the two manuals' rules. Franke gives the intervals, not a timetable, so adapt the times to your opening hours.

WhenJobSource of the rule
Before openingCheck the screen for messages, the milk level and temperature, the hoppers and the drip trayDisplay messages in the manuals
Before openingPour a test coffee and a milk drink and taste bothOur habit, to catch a problem before the first customer

After closingRun the cleaning programme with Franke's cleaner, empty and clean the grounds container, empty the milk container and clean the cooling chamberA400 and A800 manuals
WeeklyClean the bean hopper, powder hopper and brewing module as the cleaning instructions showA400 manual
After a closure of more than two daysRinse the machine before the first coffeeA800 manual

Pin the table above the machine. A clean that nobody is sure they did is an easy fault to prevent, and a tick sheet beside the machine settles it.

Keeping a log that saves a visit

A short log makes every call faster. We ask for these items when you ring, and a café that records them has the answer ready.

The date and time of each message, with the exact wording and colour.
The date of the last clean, rinse, filter change and service.
The number of products since the last service, if the screen shows it. The A400 manual links the service interval to 30,000 products.
Any change in beans, milk supplier or water supply before the fault began.
What you tried and whether it changed anything.

A change of beans or milk supplier is a common explanation for a taste complaint, and the log shows it.

Planned service for a Franke

The A400 manual asks for a technician service every year or every 30,000 products, whichever comes first. We offer a service plan for cafés, hotels and offices that fits visits to that interval. We agree the plan with you in writing, and plan customers get priority booking.

A scheduled visit to clean and inspect the milk path, the brewing module, the grinder and the water connection.
A check of the filter, the water supply and the cooling unit.
A written note of what we found and what is wearing, so you can budget before a part fails.
Priority on the day if the machine stops between visits.

We do not quote a plan price here because the figure follows the number of machines and visits. Call and we will give you a figure for your site.

Keeping a café open when the Franke stops

A stopped machine in a café costs sales every hour. A few preparations make a breakdown easier to manage.

Know the nearest backup. A second machine, even a smaller one, covers the morning rush.
Keep Franke's cleaner, tablets and spare filter cartridges in stock. Running out is a self-inflicted fault.
Photograph the rating plate and the screen message. It lets us check likely parts before we arrive.
Tell us how many products you serve a day. That decides whether a workshop repair is acceptable or an on-site repair is the only option.
Do not keep restarting a machine with a serious error. The A400 manual gives one restart, then a call to the technician.

For a hotel with breakfast service, book the repair for the earliest slot after the rush ends, and we will arrange the visit around it.

Grind, dose and temperature: change one thing at a time

Most taste complaints in Franke's table come down to three settings: the grind, the amount of coffee and the temperature. Each pushes the cup in a predictable direction, so a barista can work through them in order.

You want to fixFranke's table points toTry first
A cup that tastes flat or staleA finer grind, more coffee or a higher temperatureFiner grind by one step, then taste
A cup that tastes bitterA coarser grind, more coffee or a lower temperatureCoarser grind by one step, then taste
A cup that tastes sourA finer grind, a higher temperature or a darker roastRaise the temperature a little, then taste
Change one setting, pour, taste, and write the result in the log before touching a second setting.
The A800 manual lists a bean hopper that is not locked correctly as a cause of stale coffee, so check the lock before you touch the grinder.
Franke's table lists spoiled beans and beans that have sat in the hopper too long. Fill the hopper with what you will use in a few days.
If the table's settings do not cure the fault, the cause may be the grinder disks or the brewing module, and that is when a technician is needed.

We are happy to set up the grind and the temperature for your beans during a visit, and to write the settings in your log.

Chocolate and milk powder units

The A400 and A1000 leaflets list one or two powder dosing units, in 0.6 and 1.2 kilogram sizes, for chocolate or milk powder. Franke's table treats them separately from coffee.

ResultCause listedRemedy listed
Drink too thickToo much powder or too little waterLess powder, more water
Drink too thinToo little powder or too much waterMore powder, less water
Too sweetToo much powder (A800 table)Less powder, more water
Not sweet enoughToo little powder (A800 table)More powder, less water
Strange taste or clumpingPowder system dirty or dampClean and dry the powder system

Damp is the usual enemy of a powder system in Dubai's humid months. Keep the hopper lid closed, do not top up a damp hopper, and dry the system after cleaning. If clumps keep forming after a proper clean, the dosing unit needs inspection.

Six checks before you message us

1
Read the screen

Write down the message and any code before you switch off.

2
Seat the containers

Re-seat the milk container, bean hopper, drip tray and grounds container and lock the hopper.

3
Check the milk

Use pre-cooled milk at 2 to 5 degrees and Franke's cleaner only.

4
Restart if the manual says so

For a serious error, switch off at the main switch, wait a minute and switch on.

5
Look at the water

Check the tank level, the filter and the mains valve.

6
Check the last clean

If the daily or weekly clean was missed, run them first.

If the same message comes back, the cause is in a part you cannot reach.

What to tell us when you book

The model name and the full code from the rating plate.
The exact words and colour on the screen, and any code.
When the machine was last cleaned, filtered and serviced.
Any service agreement you hold, and with whom.
Whether it runs from a tank or a mains connection.

If you tried a step from this page, tell us which, so we do not repeat it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Franke coffee machine repair cost in Dubai?

The visit is AED 100 plus VAT. Most repairs cost between AED 80 and AED 400, and you agree the price first.

Is there a Franke service centre in Dubai?

We are an independent technician and not an authorised service partner of Franke. We are an independent repair company that visits the same day in most cases.

Do you repair the Franke A400, A600, A800 and A1000?

Yes. Send the model code from the rating plate and the wording on the screen.

Why does my Franke say refill milk?

The A400 manual says the milk container is empty or not installed correctly. Fill it and seat it. If the message stays, the sensor or pump needs checking.

How often must a Franke be cleaned?

The A400 manual says at least once a day, with the bean hopper, powder hopper and brewing module cleaned weekly. A technician should service it yearly or every 30,000 products.

Can I use any cleaner on the milk system?

No. Both manuals say to use only Franke's milk system cleaner, because other agents may leave residue.

What milk temperature does a Franke need?

Pre-cooled milk at 2 to 5 degrees Celsius.

What should I do after a serious error?

The A400 manual says to switch off at the main switch, wait a minute, switch on, check the power supply and then contact your service technician.

Why does my coffee taste bitter?

Franke's table lists a temperature that is too high, a grind that is too fine, too little coffee or a roast that is too dark. Change one thing at a time.

How do I descale a Franke?

Use your own manual or ask us.

Does a Franke run on Dubai's supply?

Franke sells versions for 220 to 240 volts single phase and 380 to 415 volts three phase. Check the rating plate against the supply.

Is it worth repairing a Franke?

A milk, brewing or grinder fault is normally worth mending. For a board on an older unit, compare the quote with a new machine.
