Overview
WMF coffee machines turn up in Dubai in two very different places. The professional line, the 1000 S, 1500 S and 5000 S, runs in hotel breakfast rooms, offices and cafés. The Perfection range, which includes the 600 and 800, sits in kitchens and small offices. Both are fully automatic and both ask for regular cleaning and descaling. When they stop, the cause is usually a blocked brewing unit, a milk system that needs cleaning, a blocked grinder, a flow fault or a descale that was postponed.
This page sets out what WMF's own manuals say about those faults. For the professional machines that means the error-number tables and the list of faults without an error message in the 1500 S and 5000 S manuals. For the Perfection it means the 600 user manual's cleaning, descaling and troubleshooting tables.

Who looks after a WMF in the UAE?
WMF's service page for its professional machines describes preventive maintenance by a technician who checks the machine regularly and systematically, cleans and descales it when required, and uses only original parts. It also describes a CoffeeConnect platform for viewing service and maintenance information, and installation and break-and-fix repairs.
WMF's page of partners worldwide lists partners in Europe, America and Asia, and the Asian section shows only China and Japan. We therefore name no UAE partner. The map may list one that the page text does not.

WMF 1500 S error numbers
The 1500 S manual lists numbered errors with a remedy. The text gave the first five clearly. For the others the page layout made it hard to tell which remedy block goes with which number, so we say where we have inferred the pairing, and you should check it against your own manual.
When beverage dispensing is blocked (186, 188, 189)
Make sure it is inserted correctly.
Restart the machine.
If it stays, switch off, take out the mains plug and call WMF service.
If the error returns after a restart, do not keep restarting. Message us for service.
When a grinder is blocked (9516, 9517)
Switch off the machine and pull the mains plug.
Lift it off.
The manual says to turn the grinder disk counterclockwise only, using the hopper multitool with two pins in the recesses on the grinder.
Replace the hopper, switch on and clean the bean hopper.
Set the grinding degree one stage coarser.
The manual also gives a general reset. If the software hangs, hold the ON/OFF switch, which responds after about a second, to switch the controller off.
A blocked grinder that returns can mean a hard object in the beans or a worn disk. We take the grinder out and look rather than keep restarting it.
Faults with no error message
Many WMF faults show no number at all. The 1500 S manual and the 5000 S manual both list them. Neither page paired each symptom with a cause in a way we could confirm, so the remedies below are grouped by topic and the pairing is our reading.
The 5000 S list
The 5000 S manual repeats one line on milk: clean and rinse the milk system more often, daily if necessary.
Milk systems on WMF professional machines
The 1500 S manual names three milk systems, and the remedy for a milk fault depends on which one you have. Look at the front of the machine or the rating plate.
If the foam stays thin or the milk spits after those steps, the milk pump, the seals or the cooler are the next things we test.
Flow errors and coffee quality settings
Errors 161, 162 and 163 are flow errors, and the 1500 S manual's remedy for 161 involves two settings that change how the coffee is made. They are worth understanding because they change the cup.
Change the grind only as the manual says and write down the original setting first, so you can go back to it once the unit has been cleaned or repaired. If the error returns after the brewing unit is clean and the grind is coarser, the cause is no longer a setting, and a technician should look at the unit and the flow path.
Chocolate and powder dispensing
The professional manuals cover a chocolate or powder hopper. The faults they list are no powder drink, a drink made only with water, and a blocked portion controller.
If the portion controller is blocked and choc comes out only with water, stop dispensing it.
Clean the powder hopper as the manual describes: empty out the powder.
Turn the dosing auger by hand until all powder is removed.
Rinse with water if needed.
Let everything dry completely before refilling.
Moisture is the enemy of a powder system. Dry the system fully after cleaning, and top up with dry powder only.
Descaling a WMF professional machine
The 1500 S manual gives a clear procedure and one firm rule: use only WMF Descaling Agent. The manual says other products may damage the machine, and that warranty claims for resulting damage are not accepted.
Follow the screen and your manual for the individual steps. If a descale was interrupted by a power cut or a stuck screen, message us before you start it again.

The Perfection 600 manual gives the programme times and the rules. Its step-by-step instructions sit in figures that the text extract did not carry, so for the exact order follow your own manual or the on-screen prompts.
A retailer's account, labelled as such
Coolblue, a retailer that sells WMF's own descaler, describes the process in four stages: prepare (empty the drip tray and tank, remove the filter, fill to the CALC mark with lukewarm water and add the descaler), descale (a cycle of about 17 minutes, with the milk tube in an empty glass), rinse (twice, emptying the container and drip tray between rinses) and refit the filter (fill the tank to max and run one last rinse). Its figure of 17 minutes differs from the manual's 20, which is the kind of difference you get between a retailer and a manual. Use the manual's number for planning.

Cleaning programmes on the Perfection
The Perfection 600 manual lists its programmes in the cleaning tile of the settings menu.
The manual shows a cleaning prompt after a milk drink. Accept it. Milk left in the system is the usual reason for a milk fault.

Water hardness and the filter
A wrong hardness setting is a quiet cause of descale prompts that come too often or too late. Ask your building for the water report and set the level once.
Power and safety
The Perfection 600 manual gives its supply as 220 to 240 volts at 50 hertz and says to connect it to an earthed 230 volt socket. Dubai's single-phase supply sits in that range. Check the rating plate of a 1500 S or 5000 S against your supply, particularly if it was imported.

Write down the number and the words before switching off.
Where the manual calls for off and on, do it once, not repeatedly.
Seat the grounds container, bean hopper and milk container, and confirm no hopper was locked by accident.
Run the milk cleaning programme and look for a kinked hose.
Look at the tank level, the float and the filter.
If it is overdue, the machine will say so. Use WMF's own descaler.

Can I use another descaler on a WMF?

Why does my WMF not foam milk?
The manuals list a kinked milk hose, a dirty combi spout, a milk system that needs filling or cleaning, and an iced cooler. Check each in turn.
What does a blocked grinder error mean?
On the 1500 S, 9516 and 9517 refer to the right and left grinder. Pull the plug, remove the hopper and turn the disk counterclockwise only, as the manual describes.
How long does a WMF Perfection descale take?
The 600 manual gives 20 minutes and up to 1,400 millilitres. A retailer account gives about 17 minutes, so use the manual's figure.
