Two kinds of machine sit under the words bean to cup. One is the fully automatic coffee machine that grinds, brews and often froths milk at the touch of a button: a Jura, a De'Longhi Magnifica, a Siemens EQ, a Miele. The other is the stand-alone coffee grinder on the counter that turns beans into grounds for a French press, a filter machine or an espresso machine. Both have a grinder at the heart, and both stop working in similar ways.
This page covers both in Dubai. It explains the faults we are called to, what the makers' own pages say about each, how to clear a grinder jam safely, what a repair costs, and when a new machine is the better buy. We used De'Longhi, Miele and Siemens guidance for the automatic machines, and the Baratza Virtuoso and Bodum Bistro manuals for the stand-alone grinders.
Our technicians come to your home or office, normally the same day. You get the fault and the price before a part is fitted, and we repair on site wherever the machine allows.
Switch off and unplug the machine. Grinders and brewing units have moving parts, and the makers' manuals say to unplug before you clean or take anything out.
Do not force anything. De'Longhi's grinder page says in capitals not to force an object that is stuck.
Read the display or the light pattern, and note it. It tells us where to look.
If the grinder is noisy or does not grind, look for a stone or other foreign object, and do not run the grinder to find out.
If a bean-to-cup machine says to clean the brewing unit, clean it as the maker describes, without washing-up liquid if the maker says not to.
If a 120 volt grinder has been plugged into the wall here, stop using it and message us (see the voltage section).
The sections below take each point further.
The visit costs AED 100 plus 5% VAT and pays for finding the fault. If you go ahead, most repairs cost between AED 80 and AED 400, depending on the part. You approve the price before we fit anything.
Same-day visits in most cases. Give the brand, the model and what the display says.
Genuine parts, quoted with the labour.
One month of cover on the parts and work.
Workshop pickup for repairs that cannot be done at your counter. On-site repair comes first.

Repair or replacePremium machines are usually worth repairingCompare the quote with a new grinder
Most of this page is about the faults the two share: foreign objects, oily beans, a grind set too fine, and the need to clean.
De'Longhi's own grinder page gives a common cause plainly: a foreign object lodged in the grinder. It says small foreign objects in coffee bags are almost inevitable, and that better brands lower the risk. Miele gives the same cause for a louder-than-usual grinder, describing a stone or other debris from the beans, and adds a second: the bean container ran empty during grinding.
De'Longhi, for most models. switch off, unplug, vacuum out the beans, and look between the two gears for the obstruction. Remove it gently, and do not force it if it is stuck. If it is hard to remove, turn the grind knob towards a larger grind. If you still cannot remove it, contact a service centre. Afterwards add a small amount of beans and press the one-cup button to confirm the grinder runs clear.
De'Longhi, for models with an electronic grinder such as the Maestosa and PrimaDonna Soul. contact the nearest service centre.
Miele. empty the beans, vacuum foreign objects out of the hopper, add a few beans and brew one coffee to clear it. If plastic or stones are in the beans, Miele says to switch off right away to prevent damage and contact Miele service.
Our advice follows. a harsh whirling noise from a grinder that is not grinding is a reason to stop. Running it makes things worse.
De'Longhi lists a grind that is too fine as the probable cause with whole beans, and too much coffee with pre-ground. For a ground-too-fine error with loud buzzing, its steps are to fill the water tank, remove the water filter if the model has one, and run a rinse cycle. If water flows, set the grinder coarser while it runs and test two or three times. The page gives settings between 3 and 5 as optimal. If no water flows, the unit may need service.
Siemens's UAE support pages say that if a machine shows the refill-beans message with a full container, or the grinder is not grinding, the beans may be too oily to fall into the grinder. Its remedy is to tap the bean container gently, consider a different coffee, and wipe the empty container with a dry cloth. Siemens also lists a blocked coffee shaft in the brewing unit as a cause of no coffee, only water, with the remedy of cleaning the brewing unit.
If a grinder on any make has been cleared and still does not grind, or the motor hums, a technician opens it to check the gear and the motor.
The brewing unit: the other main fault zone
The removable brewing unit presses the ground coffee and passes the water through it. Siemens's pages for the EQ.6 plus tell owners to remove it regularly for cleaning. Their method is a useful example of what makers ask for.
Switch the machine off at the main switch and pull out the plug.
Open the door, release the unit as the manual shows and lift it out by its grips.
Rinse the unit under running water, and the strainer under a water jet.
Wipe the inside of the machine with a damp cloth to remove coffee residue.
Leave the unit and the interior to dry before it goes back.
Siemens says to clean it without washing-up liquid, and not to put it in the dishwasher.
Your own manual decides the details. Machines differ, and some brewing units are not removable. When the maker's message to clean the brewing unit keeps coming back after a clean, the unit may be stiff or worn, and Siemens lists a stiff mechanism among the causes. We replace seals or the unit.
Siemens's support pages list dirty or wrongly assembled milk systems as the first cause of several problems on its EQ.9 plus: little or no froth, no hot water dispensed, and no milk intake.
Little or no froth. the page asks for a clean system and intake, milk that is cold, unboiled and at least 1.5% fat, and a descale.
No milk intake. put the parts together as the manual shows, joining the milk system to the outlet system before the milk container.
No hot water. Siemens points to the same dirty milk system or intake.
Siemens's EQ.6 plus page asks owners to wash the milk system after each milk drink, taking it apart and using dishwashing liquid and a soft cloth. Other makers differ, so follow yours. When cleaning does not fix it, the hose or the seal is worn, and we replace it.
Water, filter and descaling messages
A tank that is full while the machine says it is empty is a frequent call. Siemens lists six reasons for the message, from a badly seated tank and fizzy water to a stuck float and a filter that is new, airlocked or spent. For the EQ.700 it adds limescale in the system.
Push the tank fully home and fill it with ordinary tap water.
Free the float and let any air out of the filter before it goes back in.
A descaling message that keeps returning has two causes on Siemens's list. hard water without a filter, and a blocked outlet.
Use the maker's own programme and descaler. On the EQ.700, Siemens warns against vinegar and citric acid because of the gaskets.
See our guide to descaling a coffee machine for the general method, and the guides for Jura and Breville.
Symptoms on an automatic machine, and the maker's first check
These pairings come from Siemens's EQ.9 plus problem list and from De'Longhi's grinder page. They show how often the first check is something you can do in a minute.
What you seeFirst check from the maker's page
No coffee, only waterSiemens: either the hopper is empty and the machine has not noticed, or the brewing unit's coffee shaft is blocked
Cup quantity not reachedSiemens: a grind that is too fine, heavy scale, or air in the water filter
Coffee grounds wet and not compactSiemens: the grind, or too little coffee in the dose
Drip tray will not come outSiemens: a very full grounds container, or the grounds slider stuck
Water drips inside when the tray is removedSiemens: the tray came out too soon after the last drink
Empty-tray message with an empty traySiemens: the machine cannot detect emptying while it is off, or the tray is dirty
Refill-beans message with a full hopperSiemens: beans too oily to drop into the grinder
Machine no longer respondsSiemens EQ.9 plus: press and hold the on/off button for ten seconds
Coffee does not flowDe'Longhi: whole beans, grind too fine; pre-ground, too much coffee
If the first check does not change anything, the next step is a technician. The messages that return after these checks are the ones worth a call.
Grind settings, and why a wrong one looks like a fault
A grind that is too fine causes more apparent faults than any worn part. The makers' pages show the same pattern.
MachineWhat the page says about settings
Baratza Virtuoso40 settings. 1 to 14 for espresso, 16 to 32 for filter, 34 to 40 for French press. Actual grind size varies with roast, freshness, humidity and bean type
Bodum BistroFine for espresso machines, medium for filter machines, coarse for a French press, with positions between. Turn the control only while the motor is running
De'Longhi bean-to-cupA ground-too-fine error: set coarser while the grinder runs, and test two or three times
Siemens bean-to-cupCup quantity not reached or wet grounds: change the grind
Retailer's grinder wikiDo not set the grind very fine. Move finer slowly, while the grinder runs
Change the setting while the grinder is running, as three of the sources say.
After a clean, start coarse and move finer in small steps.
A change of beans, roast or weather can need a different setting. The Baratza manual says grind size varies with roast, freshness, humidity and bean type.
If a setting that used to work now jams, clean the burrs before you change it again.
A grinder that behaves after a change of setting was never broken. One that jams at every setting needs inspection.

Wash the hopper, lid and ground coffee bin in warm soapy water by hand. Never in a dishwasher.
If used daily, clean the burrs every few weeks. Lift out the ring burr by its tabs, brush off residue with the bristle brush, and do not wash the burr.
Wash the silicone seal in warm soapy water.
When refitting the burr, align the red tab on the burr with the red tab on the adjustment ring. If misaligned, turn the ring fully counterclockwise first.
The manual's automatic option is to run 2 tablespoons of a grinder cleaner such as Grindz through the empty hopper at setting 20, then run 4 tablespoons of coffee through and throw it away.
A Virtuoso that stops abruptly with a foreign object, and does not recover after cleaning, may have damaged burrs. We replace them.
The Bistro has a safety cut-out in the form of a friction clutch. A loud rattling noise signals a stone in the grinding gear. Switch off, unplug, open the unit as the maintenance section describes and remove the stone.
Do not grind more than one full timer of 20 seconds in a row, and wait 5 minutes before restarting so the motor can cool.
If beans are loaded, turn the grind control only while the motor is running.
To clean the grinding gear. unplug, empty the bean container, twist the container counterclockwise to the release stop, lift off the hopper, lift out the grinding ring and clean with a soft-bristle brush.
Clean the housing, lid, bean container and grinding cover with a damp cloth. The ground coffee container and its lid are dishwasher-safe.
The manual says other servicing should be done by an authorised service representative.
For a Bistro that rattles after the stone is out, or that hums without grinding, we check the clutch, the gear and the motor.
A jammed grinder: causes and what to do
The makers' pages agree on the main causes of a jam. A retailer's support wiki and a cleaning-products company add detail, and we label them as such.

Portafilter held too close to the chuteA cleaning-products company (Urnex)Hold the basket below the chute so the grounds do not pile up. Baratza says the same
Urnex also says a harsh whirling sound may signal a broken part or a dead motor if the clog is left alone. That matches our view that a noisy grinder should be stopped.
Voltage, plugs and imported grinders
Dubai's supply is 230 volts at 50 hertz, and its sockets take British three-pin plugs. Grinders and coffee machines often arrive from other markets.
The Baratza Virtuoso manual says to use it only with 120 volt AC current. A 120 volt grinder on a 230 volt supply can burn out the motor.
The Bodum Bistro was sold in a 220 to 240 volt EU version and a 120 volt US version. Check the rating plate. Bodum says to confirm the rating-plate voltage matches your mains supply.
The Bistro manual says the mains plug must stay accessible during use, and not to use the grinder with a damaged cord or plug.
A step-down transformer must be rated for the grinder's load. A small travel adaptor is not enough.
If you have plugged a 120 volt grinder into 230 volts and it died or smelled hot, tell us. The motor may be damaged.
Send us a photo of the rating plate. It is the first thing we check.
Use the grinder only with the voltage the manual states (Baratza. 120 volt AC only).
Do not operate it with a damaged cord or plug, or if it malfunctions or has been dropped (Baratza, Bodum).
Unplug before cleaning and when it is not in use, and pull the plug, not the cord (Baratza).
Do not leave it unattended while it is running (Baratza), and keep it away from children.
Never immerse the grinder, its plug or its cord in water or any other liquid. Clean the housing with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
Household use only, not outdoors and not near hot burners or ovens (Bodum).
Check the hopper for foreign objects before use (Bodum).
Keep the mains plug accessible while the grinder is in use (Bodum).
If a grinder smells hot, smokes, sparks or trips the breaker, unplug it and do not use it again until it has been looked at.
When we advise replacing, these are the checks we suggest before you buy. They come from the faults above, not from any brand.
Voltage. Buy a model rated for 230 volts and 50 hertz, or you will be back where you started.
Settings. Make sure the range covers the way you brew, from fine for espresso to coarse for a French press.
Access. Look for a burr set you can lift out and brush clean, as on the Baratza and Bodum models the manuals describe.
Safety features. A friction clutch that protects the gear from a stone, as on the Bodum, is worth having.
Timer. A timer or pulse control helps you grind without leaving the machine running.
Service. Ask the seller who repairs it locally, and what the warranty covers.
We repair the grinder you have if it is worth repairing, and tell you if it is not. The choice of a new one is yours.

Unplug a grinder or a bean-to-cup machine before anyone looks into the hopper or the chute. Fingers and tools do not belong near the burrs of a machine that is plugged in, even if it has stopped.
Do not keep pressing start on a grinder that is humming without grinding. Switch it off.
Empty the beans from the hopper only after it is unplugged, and keep them in a clean container so we can see whether they are oily.

How much does bean-to-cup coffee machine repair cost in Dubai?
+
The visit is AED 100 plus VAT. Most repairs cost between AED 80 and AED 400, and you approve the figure before any part goes in.
Who repairs coffee grinders in Dubai?
+
We do, at homes and offices, normally the same day: +971 55 209 9785. We repair stand-alone grinders and the grinders inside automatic machines.
Why is my bean-to-cup grinder noisy and not grinding?
+
De'Longhi and Miele both name a foreign object, such as a stone, in the grinder. Switch off, unplug and do not run it. Remove the object without force, or message us.
Can I fix a jammed grinder myself?
+
For a stand-alone grinder, the manuals describe cleaning the burrs and removing the object. For an automatic machine, De'Longhi and Miele send some models straight to service. Do not force anything.
Can oily beans damage a grinder?
+
Siemens says oily beans may not fall into the grinder. A retailer says oily, caramelised or flavoured beans can jam an espresso grinder and that resulting damage is often not covered by warranty.
Why does my machine say clean the brewing unit?
+
Siemens gives three causes: a dirty unit, too much pre-ground coffee in it, and a stiff mechanism. Rinse it, let it dry, and message us if the message comes back.
Can I use a 120 volt grinder in Dubai?
+
No. The Baratza Virtuoso manual says to use it only on 120 volt AC. Dubai's supply is 230 volts. Send us the plate photo.
Why does my Bodum Bistro rattle?
+
The manual says a loud rattling noise signals a stone in the grinding gear. Switch off, unplug and remove the stone. If it still rattles, the clutch or the gear may be worn.
How long can I run a Bodum Bistro?
+
The manual says not to grind more than one full timer of 20 seconds in a row, and to wait 5 minutes before restarting.
Do you repair Solis grinders?
+
Yes.
My machine says the tank is empty but it is full. Why?
+
Siemens lists a badly seated tank, fizzy water, a stuck float and a filter that is unrinsed, airlocked or worn. Check each, then message us.
Is it worth repairing a bean-to-cup machine?
+
For premium machines, usually yes. For a budget machine with a board or heater fault, compare the quote with a new one.
Message us on WhatsApp at +971 55 209 9785. Give the brand, the model, a photo of the rating plate and what the machine does.
