Ice Maker Not Dispensing or Dropping Ice: Causes and Fixes

Overview

Ice that is made and does not come out is one of two faults, and they are in different parts of the fridge. If the ice maker freezes its cubes and does not drop them into the bin, that is a harvest fault in the ice maker. If the bin is full and nothing comes out of the door when you press the lever, that is a dispenser fault: clumped ice, the auger, the chute flap or the control.

This guide separates the two first, then takes each in order. Most dispenser complaints turn out to be a lump of fused ice in the bin, which you can fix in two minutes, and most harvest complaints turn out to be a raised arm, a jam or a freezer that is slightly too warm. It covers fridge ice makers and door dispensers of every make, with a section on free-standing machines. For a repair, see fridge ice maker repair in Dubai.

Take the ice bin out and look at both the bin and the ice maker above or behind it. That one look tells you which half of this guide you need.

How ice gets from the mould to your glass

1
Harvest

When the cubes are frozen, the ice maker either warms the mould slightly and sweeps them out with rotating fingers, or twists a flexible tray so they crack free and fall.

2
Storage

The cubes land in a bin. A sensor stops production when the bin is full.

3
Request

You press the dispenser lever or pad. A switch tells the control, which checks that the door is closed and the lock is off.

4
Flap opens

A solenoid or small motor opens a door at the top of the chute, which is otherwise shut to keep warm air out of the freezer.

5
Auger turns

A motor behind the bin turns a large spiral inside it, pushing ice toward the opening at the front.

6
Cubed or crushed

For cubes, a gate lets them pass the blades. For crushed, the gate closes and the ice is forced through rotating blades.

7
Delivery

Ice falls down the chute into the glass. The flap stays open a few seconds, then closes.

Part 1: ice maker not dropping ice

If the mould is full of solid cubes that are not being ejected, work through these in order.

CheckWhat to look forFix
Is the ice maker switched off?It may have been turned off mid-cycle, leaving a full mouldSwitch on. Give it a few hours
Is the bin signal saying full?Wire arm raised or latched, paddle held up by ice, optical windows frosted or blocked, bin not seatedLower the arm, clear the ice, clean the windows, reseat the bin
Is something jammed?A cube wedged under the fingers or in the stripper, cubes frozen across the mouldFree it by hand or with a little warm water
Is the freezer cold enough?Thermometer near the ice maker reads warmer than about minus 15 degrees CThe ice maker is waiting for a temperature it never reaches. Fix the temperature
Has it had time?Just filled, just switched onWait
Does it run a test cycle?Press and hold the test button once, or switch off and onIf it will not cycle with all the above right, the unit has a fault

The freezer temperature check surprises people. An ice maker holding solid cubes looks cold enough. But the release is triggered by a sensor that needs the mould well below freezing, and a freezer at minus 10 will freeze the water and never trip it. More in ice maker not freezing or cold.

Harvest faults inside the ice maker

How an ice maker fails to drop its ice depends on which of the two main designs it is.

Heated-mould ice makers with ejector fingers

These have a metal mould, a row of plastic fingers on a shaft and crescent-shaped cubes. A heater under the mould loosens the ice before the fingers sweep.

SymptomCause
Fingers stopped part way, pressing on the cubesMould heater failed. The motor stalls against ice that has not been loosened
Fingers at rest, cubes solid, nothing happensMould thermostat not closing, or the motor or module failed
Cubes ejected in pieces, some left stuckMould coating worn or scaled. Ice grips the roughened surface
Grey or black flecks in the iceCoating flaking. The ice maker needs replacing
Fingers turn, cubes ride round and fall back inStripper missing or broken
Clicking from the gearboxStripped gears, usually after being forced against a jam

Twist-tray ice makers

These have a flexible plastic tray that a motor turns upside down and twists. They are common in in-door ice makers and many newer fridges.

SymptomCause
Tray does not turnMotor failed, or the tray is frozen to its surroundings by frost
Tray turns, cubes stay inTray has lost its flexibility with age, or is cracked. Cubes frozen too hard in a very cold compartment
Tray turns and stops upside downPosition switch fault, or interrupted cycle. A test cycle usually brings it home
Some cubes drop, others stickScale in the tray. Water freezing over the tray's edge from an overfill
Water drips from the tray before freezingCracked tray

On both types, a jam that was forced is the commonest way the mechanism gets broken. If the fingers or the tray do not move freely, find out what is holding them before applying any pressure.

Part 2: clumped ice, the commonest dispenser fault

Ice cubes left sitting slowly fuse together. Each time the freezer defrosts or the door opens, the surface of the cubes melts a little and refreezes, welding them into a lump that the auger cannot move. The motor hums or groans and nothing comes out.

1
Remove the ice bin

Lift and pull, or press its release. If it is frozen in place, stop and go to the section on a stuck bin.

2
Look inside

A solid mass round the auger, or a crust across the top with loose cubes beneath.

3
Empty it into the sink

Break up what you want to keep with your hands or a wooden spoon handle. Do not use a knife or bang the bin on the worktop.

4
Clear the opening at the front of the bin

Where the ice leaves. Small fragments pack in there.

5
Wash and dry the bin fully

A wet bin refits as an ice block.

6
Refit it so that it engages

The fork or tab on the bin's auger must line up with the drive at the back. Turn the auger by hand a quarter turn if the bin will not push fully home.

7
Wait for fresh ice

Or put the loose ice back.

Why it clumpedWhat to do
Ice not used for a week or moreUse it, or empty the bin every week or two
Freezer door or ice room not sealingCheck seals and that the bin is seated
Chute flap staying openWarm, damp air enters. See the flap section
Small, wet or hollow cubesThey stick together faster. Fix the fill
A power cutPartial thaw and refreeze. Empty the bin
Freezer cycling warmA cooling or defrost problem
Dispensing a little crushed ice, then leaving itFragments left in the chute and bin throat refreeze. Run a few cubes through after crushed

If you rarely use ice, switch the ice maker off and empty the bin. An idle full bin is how most auger couplings get broken.

The auger motor and drive

If the ice is loose and the bin is seated and still nothing moves, the auger drive is next.

What happens when you press the leverLikely cause
Motor hums, auger does not turn, ice looseBin not engaged with the drive, or the coupling stripped
Motor hums or groans, then goes quietStill jammed, or the motor is seized
Motor runs freely, auger in the bin stays stillDrive fork or the bin's own coupling broken
Auger turns, ice does not move forwardAuger broken or come off its mount
Grinding, plastic fragments in the iceAuger, coupling or crusher parts damaged
Silence, and the flap does openAuger motor failed or its supply is missing
Silence, flap does not open eitherNot the motor: the request is not being registered. Next section
Works for a second and stopsMotor's thermal protection tripping against a jam, or a weak motor
1
With the bin out, look at the drive at the back of its compartment

A metal or plastic fork, bar or cup.

2
Close the door switch with a finger and press the dispenser

The drive should turn. Keep fingers clear of it.

3
If it turns, the motor is fine

The fault is in the bin: its auger, coupling or crusher.

4
If it does not turn and there is no sound

The motor or its supply.

Bin assemblies, couplings and motors are all replaceable. The motor is behind the back wall of the bin compartment and is a technician's job.

No response at the dispenser

If pressing the lever or pad does nothing at all, no light, no click, no sound, the fridge is not registering the request or is refusing it.

CheckWhat to look forFix

DisplayBlank or part litDispenser board, or its wiring
Wiring through the door hingeDispenser works with the door at one angle and not anotherBroken wire in the hinge loom
After a power cutPanel frozenUnplug the fridge for five minutes

The wiring loom to a door dispenser passes through the bottom or top hinge and flexes every time the door opens. After some years a wire can break inside its insulation. The sign is a dispenser that comes and goes with door position. It is repaired by replacing or splicing the loom at the hinge.

The chute and its flap

The chute door, or flap, sits at the top of the ice chute behind the dispenser. It opens when you dispense and closes a few seconds after, to keep room air out of the freezer.

SymptomCauseFix
Auger turns, ice piles up above the chute and nothing fallsFlap not opening: solenoid or motor failed, or flap frozen shutThaw. Replace the actuator
Ice dribbles out slowly or in burstsFlap opening part way, or the chute narrowed by frostClear the frost. Actuator

A fragment wedged in the flapCrushed iceClear it with a plastic utensil, not metal
1
Look up into the chute with a torch

From the dispenser recess.

2
Clear loose fragments

With a wooden or plastic handle.

3
Melt frost with a cloth wrung out in warm water

Held against the chute. Dry afterwards.

4
Press the dispenser and watch the flap

It should open cleanly and close a few seconds after you release.

A flap that does not seal is a common hidden cause of clumped ice, frost in the ice compartment and a freezer that struggles.

Cubed and crushed

SymptomCause
Crushed selected, cubes come outCrusher solenoid not pulling the gate closed, or its linkage disconnected
Cubed selected, crushed comes outGate stuck closed, solenoid stuck, or cubes fused so they break up on the way
Crushed comes out as slush or powderBlades worn, or small wet cubes
Loud bang or crack when dispensing crushedNormal to a degree. A jam being forced if very loud
Nothing on crushed, cubes workBlades jammed with a fragment
Metal blade bent or looseDamage from an object in the bin. Replace the bin assembly

The first glass after switching from crushed to cubed often contains some crushed ice left in the chute. That is normal.

What the sounds tell you

Listen as you press the dispenser. The sound, or the lack of one, often identifies the part before anything is taken out.

SoundMeaning
A click, then a whirr and the rattle of iceNormal
A click and nothing elseThe flap has opened and the auger motor has not started
A steady hum, no iceMotor powered and held: clumped ice or a jam
A hum that rises and fallsMotor straining against a partial jam
Grinding or crackingAuger forcing fused ice, or broken parts in the bin
A whirr with no ice and no strainMotor turning, auger not: coupling or bin not engaged
No sound at allRequest not registered: lock, switch, door or board
Rapid tickingA solenoid chattering on a poor supply, or a flap linkage slipping

A stuck or frozen ice bin

If the bin itself will not come out, it has frozen to its surroundings. This is common on in-door ice makers, where meltwater runs under the bin and refreezes.

1
Do not pull hard

The bin's handle, the drive coupling and the compartment cover all break.

2
Switch the ice maker off
3
Leave the compartment open for a short while

Twenty to thirty minutes with the fridge door open is usually enough for a bin frozen in a door. Keep an eye on the rest of the fridge.

4
Or warm the edges

A hair dryer on low, kept moving and held back, round the sides of the bin.

5
Ease it out once it moves freely
6
Find out why

Frost in the ice room, a dripping fill, or a bin that was refitted wet.

If it freezes in again within days, there is an air or water leak into the ice compartment. That is a repair, described in our guides for Samsung and LG and on our fridge ice maker repair page.

If your fridge has no dispenser in the door, everything in Part 2 can be skipped. Your fault is in the ice maker's harvest.

Free-standing and commercial machines

On machines that make ice on a cold plate or in a cylinder, 'not dropping ice' means something different.

MachineSymptomCause
Commercial or undercounter cuberSlab forms and stays on the plateScale on the evaporator, hot gas valve not opening, ice too thick, low refrigerant, sensor fault
Clear-ice undercounter machineSlab drops, is not cut into cubesCutter grid wire or its transformer
CountertopIce forms on the prongs, does not fallRoom too cold or too hot, harvest heater or valve fault, shovel jammed
CountertopIce falls, is not pushed into the basketShovel motor or its switch
Ice dispenser (hotel type)Machine full, nothing dispensesIce bridged in the hopper, agitator or dispense motor, sensor

Do not prise ice off a commercial evaporator. Its plating is thin and easily damaged. See commercial ice machine not making ice and portable and countertop ice makers.

What not to do

Do not chip at ice in the bin, the mould or the chute with a knife or screwdriver.
Do not force a bin that is frozen in.
Do not turn ejector fingers or a twist tray by hand against resistance.
Do not put your fingers into the bin's auger or the drive with the fridge powered.
Do not keep pressing the dispenser against a jam. The motor overheats and the coupling strips.
Do not pour hot water into the bin compartment or the chute.
Do not refit a wet bin.

When to call a technician

The freezer is at minus 18 and the ice maker will not eject on a test cycle.
Fingers or tray are stalled and nothing is jammed.
The auger motor is silent with the ice loose and the bin seated.
The drive turns and the bin's auger does not.
The flap does not open or does not close.
The dispenser is dead with the lock off, or works only with the door in a certain position.
The bin freezes in repeatedly.
There are flecks or plastic fragments in the ice.

Our diagnostic visit is AED 100 plus VAT, with a fixed price before any work. Tell us whether the bin has ice, what you hear when you press the lever, and whether water dispenses. See fridge ice maker repair.

Preventing it

Use the ice regularly, or empty the bin every week or two.
If you are away or rarely use ice, switch the ice maker off and empty the bin.
Keep the freezer at about minus 18 degrees C.
Change the water filter on time, so cubes are full size and dry.
Wash and fully dry the bin every couple of months.
Run a few cubes through after dispensing crushed ice.
Keep the chute and flap clean.
Make sure the bin is pushed fully home every time.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my ice maker making ice but not dispensing it?

The ice has clumped in the bin in most cases. Empty the bin, break up or discard the ice and reseat the bin. If the ice is loose, check the lock, the auger motor and the chute flap.

Why is my ice maker not dropping ice into the bin?

The bin sensor thinks it is full, a cube has jammed the mechanism, the freezer is not cold enough to trigger the release, or the ice maker's motor or heater has failed.

The dispenser motor hums and no ice comes out. Why?

Ice is fused round the auger, the bin is not engaged with the drive, or the drive coupling is stripped.

Nothing happens when I press the ice lever. What should I check?

The control lock, the ice selection, that the freezer door is fully closed, then the lever switch and the dispenser board.

Why does my ice dispenser only give crushed ice?

The crusher gate is stuck closed or its solenoid has failed, or the cubes have fused and are breaking up.

Why is ice stuck in the chute?

The flap is not opening fully, or frost has narrowed the chute because the flap does not close properly.

Why does my ice keep clumping together?

It is sitting unused, the freezer or ice compartment is not staying cold, or the chute flap is letting warm air in.

How do I get a frozen ice bin out?

Switch the ice maker off, let it thaw for 20 to 30 minutes or warm the edges gently, then ease it out. Do not force it.

Water dispenses and ice does not. Is that the ice maker?

No. Water and ice use different parts of the dispenser. Look at clumped ice, the auger and the flap.

Can I fix an auger motor myself?

It is behind the back wall of the bin compartment and is a job for a technician.

Is it worth repairing an ice dispenser?

Yes. Bins, couplings, motors and flaps are modest repairs.
