Overview

One Click Dubai repairs fridge ice makers at home across Dubai, with a technician sent the same day. We repair the ice makers, ice dispensers and water dispensers built into French door, side by side, top freezer and bottom freezer refrigerators of every brand.

A fridge ice maker is a small machine that depends on four things outside itself: a cold enough freezer, water at enough pressure, a clear fill tube and a signal to run. Most faults are in one of those four, not in the ice maker unit. This page works through them in the order a technician does, then covers leaks, freezing up, dispensers, replacement and cost.

Where a part is needed, we fit a genuine ice maker assembly or valve for your refrigerator's model number.

Fridge ice maker repair in Dubai: the short answers

Fridge ice maker repair in Dubai from One Click Dubai starts with a AED 100 diagnostic visit, plus VAT. The technician tests the freezer temperature, the water supply, the fill and the ice maker's own cycle, finds the fault and gives a fixed price before any repair.

QuestionAnswer
How soon can you come? The same day, at any hour
Which fridges?French door, side by side, top and bottom freezer, built-in and American-style, all brands
What do you repair?Ice makers, ice dispensers, water dispensers, inlet valves, fill tubes, filters housings, door wiring and control boards
Which parts?Genuine parts matched to the model number. About 90% of what we use is in stock
Is it repaired at home?Yes, in nearly every case
What does the visit cost?AED 100 plus VAT, with no night or weekend surcharge
Is the repair covered?Yes. One month on parts and labour

The model number is on a label inside the fridge compartment, usually on a side wall near the top. Send a photo of it when you book. Ice makers look alike and are not interchangeable.

Fridge ice maker not working: troubleshooting the causes in order

A fridge ice maker not working has one of six causes in most cases: it is switched off, the freezer is not cold enough, no water is reaching it, the fill tube is frozen, ice is jammed in the mechanism, or the ice maker unit has failed. Check them in that order, because the first five cost little or nothing to fix.

CheckHowWhat it tells you
Is it switched on?Look for an on/off switch, a wire shut-off arm that should be down, or an Ice Off setting on the displayThe commonest cause after a clean-out or a holiday
Is the freezer cold enough? It should read about minus 18 degrees C. Ice cream should be hardAn ice maker will not cycle in a freezer warmer than about minus 12 to minus 15
Is water reaching the fridge?Does the door water dispenser run? Is the tap behind the fridge or under the sink open?No water at the dispenser either means a supply, filter or valve problem
Is the filter overdue?Check the filter light or the dateA clogged filter starves the ice maker before it affects the dispenser
Is the fill tube frozen?Look at the tube that enters the ice maker from the back. Is its end blocked with ice?A frozen tube means no water enters, though the valve may click
Is ice jammed?Look for a cube stuck in the ejector or under the armThe ice maker stops mid-cycle and waits
Does it run a test cycle? Most have a test button or a way to start a cycle by handIf it cycles and fills, the unit is sound. If not, the unit or its supply has failed

If it stopped making ice suddenly

An ice maker that stopped working overnight has usually been switched off by accident, lost its water supply after plumbing work, or jammed on a cube. One that faded over weeks, with smaller and fewer cubes, has a restriction: a filter, a kinked line or a valve that is failing.

After a new fridge, a move or a filter change

Allow 24 hours for a newly connected ice maker to produce its first ice, and discard the first two or three batches. Air in the line after a filter change can stop the fill for a cycle or two. Run a few litres through the water dispenser to clear it.

Our guides go further on each cause: ice maker not making ice, not making enough ice and a new or replaced ice maker not working.

How a fridge ice maker works

A fridge ice maker fills a small mould with water, waits for it to freeze, then turns or heats the mould to release the cubes into a bin. Knowing the sequence makes the faults easy to place.

1
Fill

The control opens an electric water valve at the back of the fridge for a few seconds. Water runs up a tube and into the mould.

2
Freeze

Cold freezer air freezes the water. A sensor in the mould watches its temperature.

3
Harvest

When the mould is cold enough, the ice maker releases the cubes. Some types warm the mould briefly and sweep the cubes out with rotating fingers. Others twist a flexible tray to crack them free.

4
Check the bin

A wire arm, a paddle or an optical sensor checks whether the bin is full. If it is, the ice maker waits.

5
Repeat

If there is room, the cycle starts again with a new fill.

StageWhat stops it
FillClosed tap, clogged filter, failed inlet valve, frozen fill tube, low water pressure
FreezeFreezer too warm, door seal leaking, blocked air vents, cooling fault
HarvestIce maker not dumping ice: jammed cube, failed motor or gears, failed mould heater, faulty mould sensor
Bin checkArm stuck up, optical sensor blocked by frost, bin not seated
ControlIce Off selected, child lock, door switch, failed board or wiring

A full cycle takes roughly one and a half to three hours, so a healthy ice maker produces a bin of ice over a day, not an hour. Heavy use on a hot day can empty the bin faster than it refills, and that is a limit of the design, not a fault.

Ice maker not filling with water

An ice maker not filling with water has a problem somewhere between the wall tap and the mould. If the door water dispenser works and the ice maker gets no water, the fault is in the ice maker's own valve outlet, its tube or its signal. If neither works, the fault is in the supply, the filter or the main valve.

Why fill tubes freeze

The fill tube is the last few centimetres of pipe before the mould, and it sits in freezing air. It should be empty between fills. If the inlet valve does not shut cleanly, it lets a slow drip through, and each drip freezes in the tube until it is blocked. Low water pressure makes this worse, because these valves rely on pressure to seat firmly. Thawing the tube gets ice for a week. Replacing the valve cures it.

Water pressure

Fridge inlet valves need a minimum supply pressure to work properly, commonly given as about 20 psi, or 1.4 bar. Apartments on high floors and villas fed from roof tanks without a pump can fall below that. The signs are slow dispenser flow, small or hollow cubes and repeated frozen fill tubes. A booster pump on the supply, not a repair to the fridge, is the fix.

See also our guide to an ice maker not filling with water.

Ice maker leaking water

An ice maker leaking water has one of four faults: the inlet valve is letting water through when it should be shut, the fill tube or cup is out of position, the mould is overfilling, or the fridge is not level. The water usually shows as a sheet of ice on the freezer floor or as drips from the bottom of the door.

Where the water or ice appearsLikely causeRepair

Puddle on the floor at the frontBlocked defrost drain, not the ice makerClear the drain

A leaking supply line behind a fridge can run unnoticed for weeks and damage flooring and cabinets. If you find water under the fridge, close the supply tap first. Plastic supply lines harden and split with age, and we replace them with braided or copper lines.

A fridge that leans forward lets the mould fill unevenly and spill over its front edge. The fridge should sit level side to side and tilt very slightly backward.

Ice maker frozen or freezing up

An ice maker freezing up has water arriving where or when it should not, or warm, moist air getting in. The result is a block of ice around the mould, the ejector or the bin that stops the mechanism.

In-door and fridge-compartment ice makers

Many French door refrigerators put the ice maker in the fresh food compartment, inside an insulated ice room in the door or the top corner, and blow freezing air to it through a duct. The arrangement saves freezer space and is far more prone to frosting, because any gap in the ice room's seals lets in humid fridge air. On these models, freezing up is more often a sealing or airflow problem than a failed ice maker.

Defrosting safely

Switch the ice maker off, empty the bin, and let the ice melt with the door open, or use a hair dryer on a low setting held well back. Never chip at the ice with a knife. The mould coating and the plastic housing are easily damaged, and the fill tube is fragile.

More detail is in our guide to an ice maker not freezing or cold.

Fridge ice dispenser not working

A fridge ice dispenser not working, while there is ice in the bin, has a fault in the parts that move the ice out: the auger motor, the crusher, the chute door or the switch you press.

SymptomCauseRepair
Motor hums, no ice comes outIce clumped in the bin, jamming the augerEmpty and break up the ice. Check why it clumped

Ice that sits unused for a week or more fuses together. If you rarely use ice, empty the bin now and then or switch the ice maker off. A clump forced through the auger strips the plastic drive coupling, which is the commonest dispenser repair we do.

See our guide to an ice maker not dispensing or dropping ice.

Small, hollow, cloudy or bad-tasting ice

The ice itself tells you about the water supply and the fill. Poor ice is rarely a fault in the ice maker unit.

Ice problemCauseFix
Small cubesLow fill: clogged filter, low pressure, partly frozen tubeFilter, pressure, valve
Hollow cubesHarvested before fully frozen, or a short fillCheck freezer temperature and fill

Bad taste or smellOld filter, stale ice, food odours absorbed in the freezerNew filter. Discard old ice. Cover strong foods
Black or grey specksCoating flaking off an old mould, or carbon dust from a new filterNew ice maker. Flush a new filter
Plastic taste on a new fridgeNew lines and reservoirDiscard the first batches. Flush several litres

Change the water filter about every six months, or sooner if the flow slows. In buildings where the supply carries sediment, a filter can clog in half that time. A genuine filter matters: poorly fitting copies can leak or restrict the flow from new.

Fridge water dispenser repair

Fridge water dispenser repair covers the chilled water outlet in the door, which shares its supply, filter and valve with the ice maker. When the dispenser stops, the cause is usually a frozen water line in the door, a clogged filter or a failed valve or switch.

SymptomLikely causeRepair

A frozen dispenser line

The tube that carries water to the door passes through the freezer door on a side by side, and it can freeze if the freezer is set colder than it needs to be or the tube's insulation has shifted. Raising the freezer setting to about minus 18 and thawing the line cures many cases. If it refreezes, the tube or its heater needs attention.

Standalone water dispensers, the kind with a bottle or a mains connection that stand on the floor, are a separate appliance, and we repair those too.

Ice maker replacement: when it is needed and what it involves

Fridge ice maker replacement is the right repair when the unit itself has failed: it will not cycle on a test with power and cold present, its motor or gears have stripped, its mould coating is flaking, or its heater or sensor has gone. It is the wrong repair when the cause is water, temperature or frost, and a new unit fitted to cure those will fail the same way.

1
Identify the part

From the fridge's model and serial number. The same fridge model can use different ice makers in different years.

2
Power off

And remove the bin and any cover.

3
Release the unit

It is held by two or three screws or clips and one wiring plug.

4
Fit the new unit

Check the fill tube sits correctly in the fill cup.

5
Test

Run a test cycle and watch the fill.

6
Wait

The first ice follows within a few hours, and a full bin within a day.

The job takes 30 to 45 minutes on most fridges. In-door units take longer because the ice room has to be defrosted and resealed.

The diagnostic visit is AED 100 plus VAT, and you are given a fixed price before any repair. A fridge is not replaced because its ice maker has failed. The only time we suggest living without the ice maker is on an old fridge where the part is no longer made, and then the fridge itself carries on working normally.

Looking after a fridge ice maker

A few habits prevent most ice maker faults.

Change the water filter every six months, with the correct filter for the model.
Keep the freezer at about minus 18 degrees C. Colder than needed encourages frozen tubes and door lines.
Use the ice. Empty and refill the bin if it has sat for more than a week or two.
Wash the bin every few months with warm water and dry it fully before refitting.
Switch the ice maker off, and close the supply tap, before a long holiday.
Keep the fridge level and the doors closing fully.
Check behind the fridge once a year for a damp supply line or joint.
After a filter change or plumbing work, run several litres through the dispenser and discard the first batch of ice.

We cover all of Dubai, including Dubai Marina, JBR, Palm Jumeirah, JLT, Downtown, Business Bay, Jumeirah, Al Barsha, Dubai Hills and Deira.
