Overview
One Click Dubai repairs ice machines and ice makers across Dubai, with a technician sent the same day. We work on commercial ice machines in restaurants, cafes, hotels and bars, on undercounter, built-in and freestanding residential ice makers in villas and apartments, on the ice makers inside refrigerators, and on countertop units.
These four kinds of machine fail in different ways and cost very different amounts to repair, so the first job is to be clear which one you have. This page sorts them out, explains how each makes ice, lists the faults we are called to most, and sets out what is worth repairing. Each type and each major brand then has its own page with more detail.
We also install commercial ice machines and look after them on maintenance contracts.
Ice machine repair in Dubai: the short answers
Ice machine repair in Dubai from One Click Dubai starts with a AED 100 diagnostic visit, plus VAT. The technician tests the water supply, the freeze and harvest cycle and the refrigeration, finds the fault and gives a fixed price before any repair starts.
Before you call, find the data plate. On a commercial machine it is on the back or inside the front panel. On a fridge it is inside the fresh food compartment. A photo of it tells us the model, the refrigerant and the parts to bring.
Which kind of ice machine do you have?
An ice machine is one of four types: a commercial machine that makes ice in bulk for a business, an undercounter or built-in ice maker for a home or small bar, an ice maker fitted inside a refrigerator, or a countertop unit you fill by hand. The type decides how it is diagnosed and whether a repair makes sense.
Ice shape is a second clue. Solid cubes, half cubes and crescents come from machines that freeze water on a cold plate and release it in batches. Flake and nugget ice come from machines that scrape ice continuously off a cold cylinder with a turning screw. The two designs share almost no faults.
How an ice machine makes ice
Every ice machine uses a refrigeration circuit to chill a metal surface below freezing and puts water on it. What differs is how the water is applied and how the ice is removed, and that difference explains most fault patterns.
Batch machines: cubes and crescents
A water valve fills a small sump.
A pump circulates the water over a cold evaporator plate. Ice builds layer by layer, and pure water freezes first, so the cubes are clear and the minerals stay in the sump.
A probe, a float or a timer decides when the ice is thick enough.
Hot refrigerant gas, sometimes with a rinse of water, warms the plate so the ice slides off into the bin.
The mineral-heavy water left in the sump is flushed to the drain and the cycle restarts.
A full cycle takes 15 to 40 minutes depending on the machine and the room and water temperature.
Continuous machines: flake and nugget
Water enters the bottom of an upright refrigerated cylinder. Ice forms on its inner wall, and a slow, powerful screw called an auger scrapes it off and pushes it upward. Flake ice leaves as it is. Nugget ice is squeezed through a die that presses out most of the water. These machines have no harvest cycle. Their weak points are the auger bearings, the water seal and the gear motor.
Fridge ice makers
A valve squirts a measured fill into a small mould in the freezer. When a sensor reads the mould as frozen, a motor turns fingers or twists the tray to drop the cubes. There is no pump and no separate refrigeration, so the ice maker depends entirely on the freezer being cold enough.
Countertop ice makers
A small pump lifts water from a hand-filled tank into a tray. Chilled metal prongs dip into it, and bullet-shaped ice forms around them in six to fifteen minutes. The prongs warm, the ice drops, and a shovel pushes it into an uninsulated basket, where it slowly melts back into the tank.
Ice machine not making ice: what to check
An ice machine not making ice has lost water, cooling or the signal to run. Six checks, in order, find the cause on most machines, and the first four need no tools.
Then note what the machine did last. A machine that froze a slab and stopped has a harvest problem. One that runs with water flowing and never forms ice has a cooling problem. One that sits silent with lights on is waiting for a signal: a bin sensor, a water level sensor or a safety that has tripped.
Our guides take each case further: ice maker not making ice, commercial ice machine not making ice, not making enough ice and portable and countertop ice makers.
The faults we repair most
Most ice machine repairs fall into water, scale, airflow, sensors and refrigeration, roughly in that order of frequency. Refrigeration faults are the least common and the most expensive.
Scale deserves a line of its own. Minerals left behind as water freezes coat the evaporator, the water distributor, the float and the sensors. A scaled plate grips the ice, a scaled sensor misreads, and a scaled float sticks. A large share of faults reported as breakdowns are cured by a proper descale.
Water leaks and drainage
An ice machine leaking water has a drain problem far more often than a supply problem. Commercial machines send water to the drain on every cycle, and the bin drains meltwater all day, so any blockage or poor fall shows up as water on the floor.
A drain must fall all the way to the floor drain and end above it with an air gap, never pushed down into it. Without the gap, a backed-up floor drain can siphon dirty water into the ice bin. Where the floor drain is higher than the machine's outlet, a drain pump is needed, and that pump is a service item.
Noise, tripping and shutdowns
An ice machine that has become loud, trips its breaker or stops with a fault light is protecting itself from something. Reset it once. If it stops again, leave it off and call, because repeated resets on a real fault damage the compressor.
Brand machines report these shutdowns in their own ways: Hoshizaki boards beep a number of times, Manitowoc Indigo machines show an E code on the display, and Scotsman Prodigy machines show a code and coloured lights. The brand pages explain each.
Undercounter and built-in home ice makers
An undercounter home ice maker is a small commercial-style batch machine in a kitchen cabinet. It makes clear ice on a cold plate, cuts or drops it into an insulated but unrefrigerated bin, and drains the melt away. Because it works like a commercial machine, it needs the same care, and most faults follow from that care being skipped.
These machines must breathe through the front grille at floor level. A plinth board fitted across it by a kitchen installer is a fault we find more often than any failed part. They also need the water filter changed about every six months and a descale at least twice a year.
Countertop and portable ice makers
A countertop ice maker is a low-cost appliance with a sealed refrigeration circuit that is not designed to be opened. Simple faults are worth fixing. A refrigeration fault usually is not, and we will say so before you spend money.
Three habits keep them going: use filtered or bottled drinking water, drain the tank after each use so it does not sit warm, and descale monthly with a food-safe descaler. Leave the unit upright for a few hours after moving it before switching on.
Fridge ice makers
A fridge ice maker that has stopped is usually short of water or cold, not broken. The freezer must be at about minus 18 degrees C, the filter must be clear, and the fill tube must not be frozen. Those three account for most calls.
The full procedure is on our fridge ice maker repair page, with separate pages for Samsung and LG, whose designs have their own habits.
Ice machine cleaning, descaling and sanitising
Ice machine cleaning is two separate jobs done one after the other: descaling with an acid ice machine cleaner to dissolve mineral scale, then sanitising to kill the bacteria, mould and yeast slime that grow in a cold, wet machine. One does not do the work of the other.
Remove all ice. Start the machine's clean or wash cycle so water circulates without freezing.
Add the correct amount of ice machine cleaner. Many evaporators are nickel plated and need a nickel-safe cleaner. The wrong acid strips the plating, and the plate then has to be replaced.
Remove the water distributor, curtain, sump parts, float and probes and clean them by hand. The cycle alone does not clear them.
Run the rinse and flush until no cleaner remains.
Circulate a food-contact sanitiser at the stated dilution, and wipe the bin, door, scoop and scoop holder with it.
Brush and vacuum the condenser fins and wash the air filter.
Discard the first one or two batches of ice.
Makers generally ask for this at least every six months. Sites with yeast or flour in the air, such as bakeries, pizzerias and bars with beer on tap, grow slime much faster and need it every two to three months.
Never mix cleaner and sanitiser, and use only the products and dilutions the maker's manual specifies. Household descalers and vinegar are not substitutes. Ice is food, and the municipality's food inspectors treat the inside of an ice machine as a food-contact surface.
Ice machine maintenance and service contracts
Ice machine maintenance is a fixed set of tasks at fixed intervals. Staff can do the frequent ones. The six-monthly service is a technician's job because it involves stripping the water system and checking the refrigeration.
We offer maintenance contracts for commercial ice machines that cover the scheduled cleans and checks, with a record of each visit for your hygiene file. The exact inclusions and number of visits are written into each contract to suit the machine and the site.
Ice machine installation
Ice machine installation decides how well the machine will run for the rest of its life. Most chronic low production and repeat breakdowns trace back to the location, the water or the drain.
We install self-contained and modular machines, connect the water, filter and drain, and commission them: timing the first cycles, checking cube size and setting the bin control.
Brands we repair
We repair every brand of ice machine in use in Dubai, with genuine parts. The brands below have their own pages because their controls, fault signals and weak points differ.
We also repair Ice-O-Matic, Brema, Icematic, Simag, ITV, GE, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Electrolux, Viking, Marvel, Summit, EdgeStar and Magic Chef machines and ice makers, among others.
What ice machine repair costs, and when to replace
Ice machine repair cost depends on which system has failed. Water-side and sensor repairs are small. Refrigeration repairs are large because the circuit must be opened, repaired, evacuated and recharged.
A fair rule: replace the machine when the repair costs more than half the price of an equivalent new one, when the evaporator plating has failed, or when it has needed a second refrigeration repair. Otherwise repair it. The diagnostic visit is AED 100 plus VAT, and you have a fixed price before deciding.
We cover all of Dubai, including Dubai Marina, JBR, Palm Jumeirah, JLT, Downtown, Business Bay, Jumeirah, Al Barsha, Dubai Hills and Deira.
Frequently asked questions
Who repairs ice machines in Dubai?
One Click Dubai repairs commercial ice machines, home ice makers and fridge ice makers across Dubai, the same day. Call or WhatsApp +971 55 209 9785.
Why is my ice machine not making ice?
It has lost water, cooling or its signal to run. Check the power and mode, the water supply and filter, the bin sensor and the condenser first.
How much does it cost to fix an ice maker?
The diagnostic visit is AED 100 plus VAT. The repair is quoted at a fixed price once the fault is found. Water and sensor faults are small jobs. Refrigeration faults are larger.
Can an ice maker be repaired, or should I replace it?
Most can be repaired. Replace when the repair exceeds about half the cost of a new machine, or when a countertop unit has a refrigeration fault.
How often should an ice machine be cleaned?
At least every six months, and every two to three months where there is yeast, flour or grease in the air.
What cleaner should I use?
The ice machine cleaner and sanitiser named by the maker. Nickel-plated evaporators need a nickel-safe cleaner.
Why is my ice machine leaking?
A blocked or badly routed drain in most cases. A cracked sump, a loose hose or a failed drain pump are the others.
Do you repair countertop ice makers?
Yes, for sensor, pump and mechanical faults. A refrigeration fault on a countertop unit is rarely worth repairing.
Do you install ice machines?
Yes. We install and commission commercial ice machines, including the water filter and drain.
Do you offer ice machine maintenance contracts?
Yes, for commercial machines.
Do you use genuine parts?
Yes.
Is the repair guaranteed?
Yes, for one month on parts and labour.
