Overview

One Click Dubai refills AC gas in flats, villas, offices and shops across Dubai, with same-day visits. An AC gas refill restores the refrigerant an air conditioner has lost, and because gas is only ever lost through a leak, our technicians find and repair the leak first, then weigh the correct gas back in.

We carry R32, R410A, R22 and R407C, and work on split, window, cassette, ducted and central air conditioning and HVAC units of every brand. You may know the job as AC gas filling, a gas top up, a recharge or a regas. It is the same work, whether you search for an air conditioner gas refill or AC gas refilling.

This page explains how to tell whether your AC really needs gas, where units leak and how leaks are found, how a proper aircon gas refill is done, from leak test to gas charging, and what it costs in Dubai.

AC gas refill in Dubai: what we do and what it costs

AC gas refill in Dubai from One Click Dubai starts with a pressure and leak check, because adding gas to a leaking unit only buys a few weeks. Market prices run from AED 150 to AED 300 for a small top-up and AED 250 to AED 600 for a full refill with checks, per unit. Our diagnostic visit is AED 100 plus VAT.

What you want to knowOur answer
How soon can you come? The same day, with bookings taken at any hour
Do you check for leaks first?Yes. Pressures are measured, and a leak test is done before gas is added
How is the leak found?Nitrogen pressure test, electronic detector, soap solution or UV dye, depending on the unit
How is the gas added?By weight on a scale, to the amount on the unit's nameplate, after a vacuum
Which gases?R32, R410A, R22 and R407C
How long does it take?30 to 45 minutes for a top-up. Two to three hours with a leak repair and full recharge
Is the work covered?Yes, by our one-month warranty on parts and labour

If the unit has other symptoms, such as tripping, noise or water dripping, book AC repair and the technician will check the gas as part of the diagnosis.

Does your AC really need gas?

Most air conditioners that cool weakly do not need gas. Refrigerant runs in a sealed circuit and is not consumed, so a unit is low only if it has leaked. Dirty filters, a clogged coil, a weak capacitor or a faulty fan produce the same warm air, and are more common.

Three checks before you call

1
Wash the filters

Blocked filters are the commonest cause of weak cooling and of ice on the coil.

2
Look at the outdoor unit

The fan should spin and the compressor should hum. Fins matted with dust need cleaning, not gas.

3
Feel the two copper pipes at the outdoor unit

After ten minutes of running, the thicker pipe should be cold and wet. If it is barely cool, or coated in ice, the gas charge needs checking.

A technician who says an air conditioner needs a gas refill without connecting gauges is guessing. Ask to see the readings.

Signs of low AC gas

The signs of low AC gas are cooling that fades over days or weeks, ice on the indoor coil or the copper pipe, a hissing sound, an oily stain at a pipe joint, and a unit that runs all day without reaching its set temperature. Each one has a cause in how the gas behaves.

SignWhy low gas causes it
Air from the unit is cool, not coldLess refrigerant passes through the coil, so less heat is carried out of the room
Ice on the indoor coil or thin pipeLow pressure makes the coil colder than freezing, and the moisture on it turns to ice
Unit runs without stoppingIt never reaches the set temperature, so the thermostat never rests it
Higher electricity billLonger running hours for the same cooling
Hissing or gurglingGas escaping at a leak, or vapour bubbling where liquid should flow
Oil stain on a joint or coilCompressor oil travels with the gas and marks the place it escapes
Water dripping indoors after a period of weak coolingIce on the coil melts when the unit stops, and overflows the drain pan
Compressor cuts out, restarts laterThe compressor relies on returning gas to cool it, and overheats when starved

Running an AC for long on low gas is hard on the compressor, which is the most expensive part of the unit. If you see ice, switch to Fan mode to melt it and book a visit.

Why AC gas runs low: it leaks, it is not used up

AC gas does not wear out and is not burnt like fuel. The same refrigerant circulates for the life of the unit, changing from liquid to gas and back. If the charge is low, some has escaped through a leak, and it will keep escaping until that leak is repaired.

A unit that has run for ten years with no leak still holds its original charge.
A yearly gas top-up is not maintenance. It is an unrepaired leak, paid for every year.
A new unit that is low within months usually has a leaking flare joint from installation.
An older unit that begins to lose gas has usually developed corrosion in a coil.

Where the idea of routine refilling comes from

Some companies add gas at every service because it is quick to sell and hard for a customer to check. Overcharging is as harmful as undercharging: pressures rise, the compressor works harder, and cooling gets worse, not better. A routine service should measure the pressure and leave the gas alone if the readings are right. Our AC service and maintenance page lists what a service should include.

Where AC gas leaks

An AC gas leak, or refrigerant leak, starts in one of five places in most units: the flare joints where the pipes connect, the service valves on the outdoor unit, the indoor coil, the outdoor coil, and the copper pipes themselves where they rub or are bent. Where the leak is decides whether the repair is small or large.

LocationWhy it leaksTypical onSize of repair
Flare joints, indoor and outdoorBadly made or under-tightened flare, or a cracked flare nutUnits in their first two years, and after relocationSmall. Joint remade
Service valves and valve coresWorn valve core or missing capAny unit that has had gauges connected many timesSmall. Core or cap replaced
Indoor (evaporator) coilPinhole corrosion in the copper tubes, from inside the fins outwardsUnits of five years and moreLarge. Coil repaired where reachable, or replaced
Outdoor (condenser) coilCorrosion from salt air, dust and moisture, or impact damageUnits near the coast, and older unitsMedium to large
Copper pipesRubbing against a bracket or another pipe, a kink, or damage during other building workAny ageSmall to medium. Section brazed or replaced
Brazed joints inside the unitsVibration cracks a factory jointOlder units with a noisy compressorMedium. Joint re-brazed

Dubai's coastal districts are hard on outdoor coils. Units facing the sea in the Marina, JBR and the Palm corrode faster than the same model inland, and washing the outdoor coil with fresh water at each service slows it.

AC leak detection: how the leak is found

AC leak detection uses four methods: a nitrogen pressure test, an electronic detector, soap solution and UV dye. Each suits a different size of leak. Our technicians choose by the unit and the situation, and often use two together: one to prove there is a leak, another to pinpoint it.

MethodHow it worksBest forLimits
Nitrogen pressure testThe system is filled with dry nitrogen to a set pressure and the gauge is watched. A falling reading proves a leakConfirming a leak, and proving a repair has heldShows that there is a leak, not where. Takes time for slow leaks
Soap solutionLeak-detection fluid is brushed onto joints and valves, and bubbles form at the leakFlare joints, valves, reachable brazed jointsOnly finds leaks you can reach and see
Electronic detectorA probe senses refrigerant in the air and sounds as it nears the sourceCoils, and joints hidden behind insulationWind and draughts outdoors reduce accuracy
UV dyeDye circulates with the gas and glows under an ultraviolet lamp where it has escapedVery slow leaks that other methods missNeeds the unit to run for a period, then a return look
Visual check for oilOil stains mark the leak pointA quick first lookDust hides small stains

Why nitrogen, and not air

Nitrogen is dry and inert. Compressed air carries moisture into the system, which later forms acid in the oil. A unit should never be pressure tested with air, and never with oxygen, which is dangerous in contact with compressor oil.

How long a proper test takes

A large leak shows on the gauge in minutes. A slow one needs the pressure held for half an hour or more, and sometimes overnight. A leak test that lasts as long as it takes to connect the hose has tested nothing.

AC gas leak repair

AC gas leak repair, or AC leak repair for short, depends on where the gas leakage is. A leaking flare joint is cut back and remade, a valve core is replaced, a pipe is brazed, and a leaking coil is brazed if the hole can be reached or replaced if it cannot. After any repair the system is pressure tested again before gas goes in.

Leak sealants

Liquid leak sealers that are injected with the gas are sold as a cheap fix. They can block the fine metering parts of the system and contaminate recovery equipment, and makers do not approve them. We repair the leak itself.

If you want a top-up only

We will always tell you when a leak should be repaired and what it will cost. Topping up a leaking unit keeps it cooling for a while, and the gas you paid for then leaks away. On a small, slow leak in an old unit that you plan to replace, that can still be a reasonable choice. It should be your choice, made with the facts.

How an AC gas refill is done properly

A proper AC gas refill has eight steps: measure, find the leak, repair it, pressure test, vacuum, weigh in the gas, check the running readings, and record what was done. Recharging an air conditioner by connecting a cylinder and watching one gauge skips six of them.

1
Measure

Gauges and thermometers are connected. Pressures and pipe temperatures show whether the charge is low, correct or too high.

2
Find the leak

By the methods described above.

3
Recover the remaining gas

For a full recharge, what is left in the unit is drawn into a recovery cylinder. It is not released into the air.

4
Repair

The joint, valve, pipe or coil is repaired.

5
Pressure test

Nitrogen is held in the system to prove the repair.

6
Vacuum

A vacuum pump removes air and moisture. The vacuum is held to confirm the system is tight and dry.

7
Weigh in the gas

The cylinder sits on a scale, and the weight on the unit's nameplate goes in, with an allowance for pipe length as the maker specifies.

8
Run and check

The unit is run. Pressures, pipe temperatures and the air temperature at the outlet are checked against what the unit should produce.

Why weight, not pressure

Pressure changes with the outdoor temperature. A gauge reading that is right at 30°C is wrong at 45°C, so charging by pressure alone on a Dubai afternoon tends to overfill. Inverter units are especially sensitive, and their makers specify the charge by weight.

What you should be told afterwards

Where the leak was, and what was done to it.
The type of gas and the weight added.
The readings before and after.

AC gas charging done this way takes two to three hours with a repair. It is slower than a top-up, and it is done once.

Top-up or full recharge?

An AC gas top up adds a small amount to a unit that is slightly low. A full recharge empties the system, vacuums it and weighs in the complete charge. A top-up suits a small loss after a minor repair. A full recharge is needed after a large leak, after the system has been opened, or when air or moisture has got in.

Gas typesSuits R32 and R22. Acceptable on R410APreferred for R407C after a leak, and for all inverter units

R407C is a mixture of three gases that leak at different rates, so what remains after a leak no longer has the right proportions. Topping it up leaves the unit with the wrong mixture, and a full recharge is the correct repair.

R22, R410A and R32: which gas is in your AC

The gas in your AC is printed on the nameplate of the outdoor unit. Older units mostly use R22, most units from the last decade use R410A, and the newest inverter units use R32. The three are not interchangeable: each needs its own pressures and oil, and the wrong gas damages the compressor.

GasFound inWhat to know
R22Older split, window and package unitsDamages the ozone layer and is being phased out worldwide under the Montreal Protocol. Supply shrinks and the price rises each year
R410AMost split and ducted units of the last decadeNo ozone damage. Runs at much higher pressure than R22, so it needs its own gauges and hoses
R32Most new inverter splitsMore efficient, with about a third of R410A's global warming effect. Mildly flammable, so technicians keep flames and sparks away while handling it
R407CSome ducted and package units, and R22 replacementsA three-part blend. Needs a full recharge after a leak

Can an R22 unit be switched to another gas?

Not simply. R410A and R32 run at pressures an R22 unit was not built for. Replacement blends made for R22 systems exist, but capacity usually drops and the oil may need changing. On an R22 unit of ten years or more with a major leak, the money is usually better spent towards a new unit. See AC installation.

Is AC gas the same as freon or coolant?

Freon is a brand name that became the everyday word for AC gas, most often meaning R22. Coolant and refrigerant mean the same thing. If someone offers a freon refill or an AC refrigerant recharge, ask which gas they mean and check it against your nameplate.

Different gases must never be mixed in one unit. If the wrong gas has been added, the whole charge is recovered and the unit recharged.

AC gas refill price in Dubai

AC gas refill price in Dubai is typically AED 150 to AED 300 for a small top-up and AED 250 to AED 600 for a full refill with checks, per unit. Leak repair is separate. These are 2026 market prices published by companies in the city, before VAT, and are not our fixed price list.

JobTypical Dubai market range (AED)
Diagnostic visit100 to 200
Small gas top-up150 to 300
Full recharge, R32280 to 500
Full recharge, R410A300 to 550
Full recharge, R22350 to 600
Leak repair at a joint or valve100 to 500
Coil leak repair400 to 1,500

Our own diagnostic fee is AED 100 plus VAT. The technician gives you the price for the repair and the gas before starting.

What changes the price

The gas. R22 costs more because supply is shrinking.
The amount. A 2.5 ton unit holds roughly twice the charge of a 1 ton unit. Published top-up prices run from AED 150 to 200 for a 1 ton split, AED 180 to 250 for a 1.5 ton AC, and AED 220 to 300 for 2 tons.
Where the leak is. A flare joint takes minutes, and a coil takes hours.
Pipe length. Long runs need extra gas.
Access to the outdoor unit.

What a very low price leaves out

AC gas filling charges and split AC gas refilling prices advertised well below the market usually cover a short top-up with no leak test, no vacuum and no weighing. The unit cools that evening, and the gas is gone again in weeks. Ask what is included before comparing prices.

Gas refill by AC type

The refill method is the same for every air conditioner, at home or in an office, but the amount of gas, the access and the common leak points differ by type. A split AC gas refill is the simplest. Central and ducted systems hold more gas and have longer pipe runs to test.

TypeTypical gasCommon leak pointsPoints to know

Central air conditioner gas refill (ducted and central split)R410A, R407C or R22Joints in long pipe runs, coilsLarger charge. Leak testing takes longer

Portable ACR410A, R32 or R290Rarely leaksSealed system. Often not economical to refill

Chilled-water fan coil units in district cooling towers contain no refrigerant gas at all. If one stops cooling, the cause is the valve, the fan or the chilled water supply.

Is leaking AC gas dangerous?

A small AC gas leak in a ventilated room is not a poisoning risk, but it should not be ignored. Refrigerant is heavier than air and, in quantity, displaces oxygen in a closed space. Leaked gas touching a flame or a very hot surface can break down into irritating fumes.

If you smell something sweet or chemical near the unit, or hear steady hissing, switch the AC off and open the windows.
Do not smoke or light candles in the room until it has aired.
Liquid refrigerant escaping from a pipe is extremely cold and causes frostbite. Do not touch a frosted joint or try to tighten it.
R32 is mildly flammable. Normal leaks from a home unit do not reach a dangerous concentration, but keep ignition sources away.
Anyone who feels dizzy or short of breath should move to fresh air and seek medical advice.

Refrigerant should never be released on purpose. R22 damages the ozone layer, and all of these gases add to global warming, which is why we recover old gas into cylinders.

Rented homes: who pays for a gas refill

In a rented Dubai home, a gas refill caused by a leak is a repair, and under Dubai's Law No. 26 of 2007 the landlord is responsible for repairs and maintenance unless the tenancy contract says otherwise. Many contracts do say otherwise for minor repairs, so read the maintenance clause.

Ask for the fault to be written on the invoice. where the leak was and what was repaired. It shows the cause was a defect, not misuse.
Tell the landlord before the work, and agree who pays.
Keep the invoice. If the same unit needs gas again, the record supports a proper repair or a replacement.

How to avoid paying for gas twice

You avoid paying for gas twice by insisting on three things: readings before any gas is added, a leak test, and the weight of gas written on the invoice. With those three, a refill is a repair. Without them, it is a guess.

Ask to see the gauge readings, and what they should be.
Ask where the leak is. If it has not been found, it has not been fixed.
Ask whether the system will be vacuumed, if it is being opened or fully recharged.
Ask which gas is being used, and check it matches the nameplate.
Ask for the weight added.
Be wary of gas offered at every service.
Keep the outdoor coil clean, since washing it at each service slows corrosion.

If a unit was refilled recently and is weak again, tell us when it was done and by whom. That history often points straight to the leak.

Frequently asked questions

How often does an AC need a gas refill?

Never, if it does not leak. The gas is sealed in and is not used up. A unit that needs gas has a leak that should be found and repaired.

How long does AC gas last after a refill?

For the life of the unit, if the leak was repaired. If gas was added without a repair, it lasts until it leaks out again, which can be days or months.

Can I refill AC gas myself?

No. It needs gauges, a vacuum pump, a scale and the correct gas, and the pressures involved are high enough to injure. Wrong charging damages the compressor.

Will a gas refill make my AC colder?

Only if it was low. If the charge is already correct, adding gas makes cooling worse and strains the compressor.

Why does my AC need gas every year?

Because a leak has never been repaired. Each top-up escapes through the same hole.

Can you top up without finding the leak?

We test first and tell you what we find. If you then choose a top-up only, we explain what to expect.

Does a new AC need gas when it is installed?

No. The outdoor unit comes charged for a standard pipe length. Extra is added only for longer pipe runs.

Which is better, R32 or R410A?

R32 is more efficient and has a lower warming effect, but you cannot choose. A unit must use the gas it was built for.

Is ice on my AC pipe always low gas?

No. A blocked filter or dirty coil causes ice as well. Clean the filters first, and if ice returns, have the gas checked.

Do you refill gas for all brands?

Yes, including Daikin, Mitsubishi, LG, Samsung, Gree, O General, Midea, Hitachi, Carrier and York.
