Overview
A washing machine door that is locked and won't open is nearly always doing what it was designed to do. The lock holds for one to three minutes after the cycle ends, and it will not release at all while the machine senses water in the drum, a drum that is still turning or a temperature that is too high. Wait, drain the water, and most doors open.
When the door stays shut with the drum empty and the machine cold, the cause is a child lock, a cycle that has not actually finished, a lock that has failed in the locked position, or a broken handle. This guide gives the steps in order, shows how the emergency release works on machines that have one, explains how to get laundry out without damaging the door, and says when to stop. It covers front load and top load machines. For a repair, see washing machine repair in Dubai.
Washing machine door locked: the short answer
Do not pull hard on the handle at any stage. A forced handle snaps, and a door with a broken handle and an engaged lock is a much harder problem than the one you started with.
Why washing machine doors lock
A front load washing machine holds water above the level of the door and spins at over a thousand revolutions a minute. The door lock exists so that neither can meet an open door. The control refuses to release the lock until three conditions are met.
Why there is a delay even after everything stops
Many locks are thermal. A tiny heater inside the lock warms an element that pushes the locking pin. When the cycle ends, the heater switches off, and the element has to cool before the pin withdraws. That takes one to two minutes, sometimes three, and you hear a soft click when it lets go. Machines with a solenoid lock release at once with a sharper click.
So a door that will not open the instant the music plays is normal. A door that is still locked ten minutes after the end, with an empty drum, is not.
Step 1: wait, and read the display
Is the cycle really over? An End message, a zero, or all stage lights off means it is. A time remaining, a flashing stage light or a pause symbol means it is not.
With the machine left on. Do not switch off at the wall yet: on many models the lock needs the control to tell it to release.
Then try the handle with normal pressure.
A lit padlock usually means locked. On most machines it goes out when the door can be opened.
A code means the machine stopped because of a fault, and the door is locked because of that fault.
Step 2: check for water in the drum
Water is the commonest reason for a door that stays locked. Look through the glass. If you can see water, or the laundry is sitting in it, the door will not release until it has gone.
And press Start. Listen for the pump.
The door should open two or three minutes after the programme ends.
The filter, hose or pump is blocked. The water has to be let out by hand.
Before draining by hand.
Behind the small flap at the bottom front, beside the filter. Pull it out, hold it over a shallow tray, remove its plug and let it run. Replug it to empty the tray.
Unhook it at the back and put its end in a bucket or floor drain, below the level of the water in the drum.
Over a tray, with towels down.
Once the level has dropped, the lock releases within a few minutes. Some machines need a short Spin or Drain programme run to the end before they let go.
Expect a lot of water, 15 litres or more. The full method, and how to clear the blockage that caused it, is in our guide to a washing machine not draining. Do not open the filter fully on a machine that stopped during a hot wash until it has cooled.
Step 3: child lock and control lock
Child lock disables the buttons, and on some machines it also holds the door after the cycle. It is easy to switch on by accident while wiping the panel.
The button combination is printed on the panel on most machines, as a small key or face symbol with a bracket joining two buttons. If the panel has no marking, check the manual by model number. Once the lock is off, the buttons respond again and the cycle can be cancelled or ended normally.
Step 4: reset the control
An electronic control can freeze in a locked state, particularly after a power dip or when a cycle is interrupted. A reset costs nothing.
If it responds.
Or switch off the socket.
This lets the control discharge and a thermal lock cool.
A thermal lock often releases by itself once it has cooled with the power off.
Then try the door.
And wait for the click.
One reset is useful. Repeating it many times is not. If the door does not release after one proper cool-down, move on.
After a power cut or switching off mid-cycle
If the power fails or the machine is switched off during a wash, the door stays locked because the machine stopped with water inside and no chance to drain it.
Opening the door during a normal wash is done with Pause, not by switching off. Press Pause and wait. If the water level and temperature allow, the door releases after a minute or two. If the level is too high, the machine keeps the door shut, and on models with a small add-door in the main door, that is what the add-door is for.
The emergency door release
Most current front loaders have a manual release for the door lock. It is for a machine that has been drained and still will not open. Where it is and how it works differ by make, so treat this as a general guide and confirm in your manual.
And let the machine cool.
Always.
The same flap that covers the pump filter.
Often coloured orange, red or yellow, sometimes with a door symbol. On some machines it is a plastic loop you pull downward. On others it is a small lever.
And at the same time pull the door open with the other hand. Some need a tool hooked into the loop.
On some machines the lock is reached from above with the top panel removed, by reaching down beside the drum to push the lock's release tab. That means removing screws at the back of the top panel and is best left to a technician if you are unsure.
The release frees the lock. It does not repair it. A machine that needed its emergency release will usually need a new lock before the next wash, because whatever stopped it letting go will stop it again.
A broken handle or latch
If the lock has released and the door still will not open, the handle or the latch mechanism inside the door has failed. The usual history is that someone pulled hard on a locked door.
Getting a door open with a broken handle
With the machine drained and unplugged, a length of strong thin cord or fishing line can sometimes be worked into the gap between the door and the front panel on the latch side, looped round the latch hook and pulled sideways toward the hinge to draw the hook back. It works on doors where the gap allows it and not on others. If it does not go easily, stop. Levering at the door with a screwdriver chips the glass surround and bends the front panel.
Handles and latch kits are specific to the model and are fitted from inside the door, which is split by removing its ring of screws. It is a short job for a technician with the right part.
Door locked with a code or flashing lights
If the machine stopped with a code and the door is locked, the code tells you why it stopped, and that tells you what has to be dealt with before the door will release.
For makes not listed here, note the code or the pattern of lights and look it up in the manual for your model. Do not guess from another brand's list. The same letters mean different things on different machines.
When the lock itself has failed
Door locks wear out. They cycle on every wash, and thermal types run a small heater for the whole programme.
A lock is replaced, not repaired. On most front loaders the outer band of the door seal is released, the seal is folded back on the latch side, and the lock is unscrewed from behind the front panel and unplugged. The control's output to the lock is tested at the same time, because a relay stuck on at the board will hold a new lock shut as well.
Confirmed door-lock codes are Samsung LO, FL or dE1 for the lock and dC, dE or dS for the door, LG dE, dE1 or dE2, Bosch and Siemens E16, F16 or E34, Whirlpool F5 E2, and Miele F34 for a door that could not be locked and F35 for a door that could not be released.
Top load machines: a lid that won't open
Top loaders with a lid lock hold the lid during the spin, and on some models for the whole cycle. The lid should release within a minute or two of the tub stopping.
Confirmed Whirlpool codes are LdL, the lid is not locking, LdU, the lid cannot be released, and lid, the lid was left open. For LdU, take anything off the top of the washer, such as a laundry basket, and try again. Do not prise a lid. The strike and the lock housing are plastic.

What not to do
When to call a technician, and what it costs
Call when the drum is empty and cold and the door still will not open after a reset, when there is no emergency release you can reach, when the handle is broken, when the door has opened and the machine now will not start, or when the machine will not drain and you cannot empty it.

How to avoid a locked door
Frequently asked questions
Why is my washing machine door locked?
It locks for safety during the cycle and for one to three minutes afterwards. It stays locked if there is water in the drum, the cycle has not finished, child lock is on or the lock has failed.
How long does a washing machine door take to release?
Usually one to two minutes after the cycle ends, sometimes three.
How do I open a locked washing machine door?
Wait three minutes. If there is water, run Drain or empty it by hand. Switch off child lock. Unplug for ten minutes. If the drum is empty and it is still locked, use the emergency release.
How do I unlock the door with water still inside?
You should not. Drain the water first, through the emergency hose, the drain hose or the filter. The door then releases.
Where is the emergency door release?
On most front loaders, behind the pump filter flap at the bottom front: a coloured tab or loop. Check your manual.
The cycle finished and the door is still locked. Why?
Water left in the drum, a control that has frozen, or a lock stuck in the locked position.
My handle broke. How do I open the door?
Drain and unplug the machine. A cord looped round the latch can sometimes release it. Otherwise it needs a technician and a new handle.
Does unplugging the machine unlock the door?
With a thermal lock it often does after a few minutes, as the lock cools. With other types it may not.
Can I open the door during a wash?
Press Pause and wait. If the water level and temperature are safe, the door releases. Do not switch off at the wall to do it.
Is it safe to bypass the door lock?
No.
How much does a new door lock cost in Dubai?
It is one of the smaller repairs. We fix the price after diagnosis, and the visit is AED 100 plus VAT.
