Five checks before you book
Five checks settle a good share of washing machine not working calls without a visit: the power, the tap, the door, the drain filter and the load. Each takes a minute or two and needs no tools.
Try another appliance in the same socket. Check that the breaker has not tripped. Press the machine's power button firmly, and hold Start for two seconds on machines that need it.
Make sure the tap behind the machine is fully open and the inlet hose is not kinked. A machine with no water waits, then shows a fill error.
Push the door until it clicks. A sock or a strap caught in the seal stops the lock from engaging, and the machine will not start.
On most front loaders there is a small flap at the bottom front. Put a tray and a towel down, unscrew the filter slowly and clear coins, hair pins and lint. Do this only when the drum is not full of hot water.
One heavy item, such as a bath mat or a single blanket, cannot balance. The machine refuses to spin. Add a few towels or take the item out and try the spin again.
Three settings that look like faults
If the machine has stopped working mid-cycle with water inside, do not force the door. The lock releases a couple of minutes after the power is off, once the water level is below the door.

Three signs to stop using the machine
Not draining and not spinning: the two commonest faults
A washing machine that will not drain usually has a blocked filter or a failed pump, and a machine that will not spin often has the same problem, because it refuses to spin while water remains in the drum. Check the drain before suspecting the motor.
Washer not draining
We clear the filter, the sump hose and the drain hose, test the pump, and replace it if it has failed. A pump is among the quicker repairs.
Washer will not spin
On a top load machine, a lid switch that has failed stops the spin in the same way a door lock does on a front loader.
Leaks, noise and vibration
Where the water appears tells you where a washing machine is leaking, and when a noise happens tells you what is making it. Both can be narrowed down before a technician arrives.
A new machine that shakes violently on its first wash almost always still has its transit bolts in. They hold the drum for delivery and must come out before use.

Washing machine drum repair nearly always means the bearings. They sit behind the drum, and when their seal fails, water reaches them and they begin to roar. Bearing replacement is the largest common repair on a washing machine, and it is one of the jobs we often take to the workshop, because the whole tub has to come out.

We tell you which kind of tub your model has before quoting. A cracked drum, a broken drum paddle and a loose drum are different faults, and are checked at the same visit.
PCB and control board repair
Washing machine PCB repair fixes the electronic board that runs the cycle. A board can sometimes be repaired at component level, by replacing a relay, a capacitor or a burnt track, and sometimes has to be replaced. Repair costs less. Replacement is the surer fix when the damage is widespread.
If you have been told the motherboard has failed, ask which part of the cycle fails and what was tested. Many boards are blamed for a faulty lock or sensor.
Front load, top load, automatic and semi-automatic machines
Front load and top load washing machines fail in different ways, because they are built differently. A front loader has a door seal, a door lock and bearings behind a horizontal drum. A top loader has a lid switch, a clutch or gearbox on many models, and suspension rods.
Inverter or direct-drive machines have no belt and no brushes. Their motor is fixed to the back of the drum. They are quieter and have fewer wearing parts, and when they fail, the fault is usually the motor's position sensor or the control board.
Washing machine error codes: what the display is telling you
A washing machine error code names the function that failed, not the part. A drain code means water did not leave in time: the cause may be the filter, the hose or the pump. Use the code to choose the check, and look up the exact meaning in your model's manual, because codes differ between models.
What to do with a code
Codes with similar letters mean different things. A photo avoids mistakes.
Drain code: clean the filter and check the hose. Water code: check the tap and the inlet hose. Door code: reclose the door. Unbalance code: redistribute the load.
Switch off at the socket for five minutes and try again.

Repair or replace?
Repair a washing machine when the repair costs less than about half the price of a comparable new machine and the machine is under eight to ten years old. Replace it when a major part fails on an old or budget machine, or when it has needed several repairs in a year.
A new 7 kg front loader sells for roughly AED 1,400 to AED 1,900 in Dubai, and premium models for AED 4,000 and more. A repair of AED 500 means something different on each. We give you both figures and leave the choice to you.
Washing machine installation
Washing machine installation takes about an hour: the transit bolts come out, the machine is levelled, the inlet hose is connected to the tap, the drain hose is set at the right height, and a test cycle is run. We install new washers, reinstall after a move, and stack washers with dryers.
Three or four bolts at the back lock the drum for delivery. Left in, they make the machine shake violently and can damage it. Keep them for the next move.
The machine must stand on a firm floor, with all four feet down and the lock nuts tightened. Check with a spirit level across the top.
Hand-tight with its rubber washer and filter in place. Open the tap and check for drips.
The hose should rise to the height the maker gives, usually 60 to 100 cm, before it enters the standpipe or the sink trap, and should not be pushed far down the pipe. Too low and the machine siphons, emptying as it fills.
Plug straight into a wall socket. Extension leads overheat under a washing machine's load.
Run a short cycle with no clothes and watch the fill, the drain and the spin.

Do I have to bring the machine to a repair shop?
No. The technician comes to you. If a job needs the workshop, we collect and return the machine or the part.
Can you repair a machine that is built into a kitchen cabinet?
Yes. Tell us when you book, because removing the cabinet door and plinth adds time.
Is it safe to keep using a noisy machine?
A rattle from a coin is harmless. A roar in the spin is a bearing, and continued use damages the drum shaft and can make the repair uneconomic.
Why does my washing machine smell?
Mould grows in the door seal, drawer and drum when only cool washes are used and the door is kept shut. A monthly hot wash and an open door prevent it.
Can I open a locked door with water inside?
Not by force. Drain the machine through the small emergency hose beside the filter, wait a few minutes with the power off, and the lock releases.

Around eight to twelve years with normal use. Premium machines are built for longer. Hard water and overloading shorten it.
