Overview

A La Pavoni lever machine has no pump, no electronic board and no screen. It has a boiler, a heating element, a lever, a piston, a group and a set of rubber and silicone seals. That simplicity makes it repairable, and it also decides which faults you meet: a dripping group, a hissing safety valve, a stiff lever, no steam, or a machine that heats slowly or not at all.

This page is for owners of La Pavoni Europiccola, Professional, Stradivari and Expo machines in Dubai. It sets out what the maker's manuals say about water level, warm-up, pressure, steam and troubleshooting, what a seal rebuild involves, what the safety valve and pressurestat are for, and when to stop and call a technician.

Our technicians collect your machine or come to your home, test it, tell you what is wrong and quote a price before any part is fitted. Many lever machine repairs can be done at your counter on the day.

La Pavoni repair in Dubai: what we fix and what it costs

The visit costs AED 100 plus 5% VAT, and it pays for finding the fault. If you go ahead with a repair, most La Pavoni jobs come to between AED 80 and AED 400, depending on how many seals the machine needs and whether any part is worn out. You approve the figure before work starts.

Same-day visits in most cases. Send us the model and the symptom on WhatsApp.
Genuine seals and parts, quoted with the labour.
Workshop pickup if the machine needs a full strip. We try to fix on site first.
One month of cover on the parts and the work.

Which La Pavoni do you have?

La Pavoni's manual for the Europiccola covers a family: Europiccola, Professional, Stradivari, Stradivari Professional and Expo. The Esperto is a separate lever model with its own manual. The model name is engraved on the front or the base, and the data plate sits under the base.

Who looks after your La Pavoni in the UAE?

The manuals send owners to an authorised service centre for maintenance, for a worn gasket and for changing the power cable. For a machine still within its warranty, start with the shop that sold it, and keep the receipt.

How a lever machine works, in the manual's own order

Knowing the order explains most of the faults. These steps follow La Pavoni's Esperto manual and match the Europiccola manual.

1
Fill the boiler with cold water

The manual says the water should not rise above the top of the level glass and should not fall below its lower part. For a lot of steam, the water should sit about halfway up. Do not fill with warm or hot water.

2
Heat to pressure

The Esperto manual says to wait for the required pressure, about five minutes, and for the group to reach 90 to 95 degrees Celsius on the temperature plate. The indicator light switches on and off in normal use as the pressure switch regulates the boiler.

3
Read the gauge

The machine is ready when the pointer reaches the green zone. The manual gives no numeric pressure values. If the gauge shows a false pressure, open the steam knob briefly to release air, close it, and wait for the needle to return to the green zone.

4
Pull the shot

Raise the lever, then lower it fully to dispense. Match the force you use to the resistance you feel.

5
Rest the lever down

The manual says to leave the lever down so that any water remaining in the boiler does not leak out from the group head.

6
Wait before you remove the filter holder

Give it a few seconds, so that residual pressure releases.

The Europiccola manual adds that when the machine is off and cooling the lever may rise by itself, and says a vacuum forming in the boiler causes it. That is normal behaviour.

Troubleshooting: La Pavoni's own table

This is the Esperto manual's troubleshooting table, shortened and in plain English. The Europiccola and Professional charts may differ in detail. The last column is what we add.

The first half of the table is about dose, grind and tamp, which you control. The second half is about the boiler, the switch and the gasket, which need a technician.

The group gasket and the seal rebuild

A repair guide published by the iFixit community lists the seals in a lever machine's group. It is a repair guide and not La Pavoni documentation, and an enthusiast who writes about La Pavoni repair says that seal replacement covers almost all of the repairs he has needed. The list is a good map of what a rebuild means.

SealWhere it isSign it has worn
Sieve gasketThe large gasket round the sieveCoffee or water leaks at the group, weak delivery
Unit-to-boiler gasketBetween the group unit and the boilerWater or steam weeping where the group meets the boiler
Piston lip rings (two)On the pistonLever feels loose or has no resistance, water bypasses the piston
Piston rod sealA silicone gasket with a brass disc and circlipWater or steam at the top of the lever housing
Steam pipe gaskets (two)On the steam pipeSteam leaks at the base of the wand
Riser pipe sealing plugThe black plugLeaks or poor sealing in the riser

What a technician watches for

The machine is unplugged and cold, the tank cap is open and the water is out before any part comes off.
The guide says lip rings face the pressure side. On the piston, the upper ring's lip points up and the lower ring's points down. The sieve gasket is asymmetrical and the flat side faces outward.
New seals and the sliding parts are lightly greased with food-safe silicone grease.
Chrome scratches easily. Plastic tools are used on the lever pins.
When the lever is refitted the rear pin hole must sit higher, and the lower cap nut is left with some downward play before the upper nut locks it.
The boiler is descaled if it needs it while it is open.

We do this work for you and test the lever for resistance, leaks and return afterwards. If the lever pins, the bushes or the chrome are worn, we tell you and quote that separately.

The safety valve, the pressurestat and the pressure gauge

The boiler is pressurised and hot, which makes these parts the ones to respect. La Pavoni's own wording is cautious.

The Esperto manual says that if the safety valve whistles, or steam escapes from the valve or the condensation basin, the spring may be blocked or the pressure switch may be out of range. Both need a service centre.
The Europiccola manual says the boiler has a pressure gauge and a safety valve with a condensation basin.
An enthusiast's site says Europiccolas built from about 1998 have a pressurestat, which keeps the boiler at a constant temperature, and that the Professional has an adjustable one.
A retailer's care guide says never to open the boiler cap while the machine is hot or pressurised, and that pressurestat and safety controls need qualified service.

A hissing valve after a descale

A forum thread described a pre-millennium Europiccola with a pressurestat whose safety valve began hissing after a vinegar descale. Users in the thread reported that machines with and without a pressurestat use different safety valve springs, and that fitting the wrong one made the valve hiss while the machine was warm. The hissing stopped when the right spring went in. That is forum experience and not La Pavoni documentation, but it shows why we check the model and year before we replace a valve part.

In that thread, one reply suspected a corroded valve ball or seat after the vinegar descale. A seat and ball that no longer seal need cleaning or replacing.
Do not tighten, plug or block a safety valve. Switch the machine off and unplug it.

A gauge that shows no pressure when the machine has been heating for a long time points to the element, the thermostat or a pressure leak. We find out which.

Water, scale and descaling

Scale is the quiet cause of slow heating, weak steam and a noisy boiler. The Esperto table lists scale as a cause of coffee that is too cold, no steam and a noisy machine, and the only instruction it gives is to descale.

The Esperto manual says to prepare a new boiler with water and two teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda or one tablespoon of white vinegar. It then tells you to run the lever to discharge the solution, refill with clean water and rinse.
The manual gives no step-by-step descaling procedure for ongoing use.
A retailer's guide says not to descale on a calendar, but to decide from the water quality, an inspection, how the machine performs and the maker's procedure.
The same guide says to use only acids at the strength the manufacturer specifies, because wrong chemistry can damage finishes, seals, elements and plated parts.
It adds that distilled water, and aggressive water from a reverse-osmosis system, may be unsuitable unless it is brought up to the maker's requirements.

Our advice follows from that. Do not experiment with strong acids in a boiler that has a chrome finish and rubber seals. If your machine heats slowly, makes noise or has lost steam, we open it, look at the element and the boiler, and descale by the right method. You can also read our guide to descaling a coffee machine for the general principles.

Steam: what the manual says

The Esperto manual says to keep the lever down, turn the steam knob anticlockwise to clear condensation, and then open it further.
It recommends dispensing steam for a maximum of two minutes at a time.
Steam comes out at about 100 degrees Celsius, and the manual warns against putting your hands under the nozzle.
The steam pipe should be wiped with a damp cloth after every use, to keep the holes clear.
If there is no steam, the manual lists not at pressure, a clogged tip, no water, a pipe not seated and scale. It says to clear the holes with a needle.

Weak steam from a clean tip on a hot machine with water in the boiler is a repair. The valve, the pipe gaskets or the element needs attention.

A stiff, rough or noisy lever

The lever and its piston are the heart of a lever machine, and the feel of the lever is the quickest diagnostic. Three things change it.

A rough or squeaking lever, a retailer's guide says, points to the piston seals, the condition of the cylinder and the lubrication. The machine must be cooled and depressurised before it is serviced.
A lever with no resistance suggests worn lip rings letting water past the piston, or a grind that is too coarse. Check the grind first, as the manual does.
A lever that rises by itself while the machine cools is normal. The Europiccola manual explains it as vacuum in the boiler.
A lever with sideways play at the pivot suggests worn pins or bushes.

We test the lever on the bench before and after the seals go in, so the feel of it is part of the repair.

Cleaning and care between visits

The Esperto manual's cleaning chapter is short, and a retailer's guide fills in the routine. We separate the two.

From the manual

Wipe the body with a damp cloth and dry it. Do not use alcohol, solvents, abrasives or detergents.
Clean the filter holder and the filters regularly with warm water and a neutral detergent.
Wipe the steam pipe after every use.
Unplug the machine before cleaning and when it is not in use, and let it cool before installing or removing parts.
For long storage, switch it off and unplug it by the plug, not the cable.

From a retailer's care guide

WhenJob
After each useRinse the puck, basket and portafilter. Wipe the group seal once it is cool enough. Purge and wipe the steam wand after milk. Empty and rinse the drip tray
WeeklyWash removable parts with an approved coffee cleaner, keeping items out of liquid if the cleaner forbids immersion. Inspect the group, sight glass, boiler cap, steam valve, base and cord. Check the lever only when the machine is cool
When symptoms appearService from symptoms, not a calendar

The same guide says not to backflush a classic lever group. Clean it according to the model's manual.

Voltage and the data plate

Dubai's supply is 230 volts at 50 hertz. The Europiccola manual says to check that the mains voltage matches the data plate under the base before you connect it, and La Pavoni's manual list includes Professional models for both 120 volt and 230 volt supplies.

A machine bought in the United States may be a 120 volt model. Plugged into a 230 volt supply, the element and the pressurestat can be damaged.
Check the plate, then the plug, before you switch on a machine from abroad.
Make sure the switch sits flush with the frame before you plug the machine in. The manual states it.
Do not use a machine with a damaged cable or plug. The manual sends the owner to a service centre for a cable change.

If you have a 120 volt machine and want to use it here, ask us. A step-down transformer is one answer. A 230 volt element or a different machine is another.

Why seal replacement goes wrong when it is not done carefully

Seal replacement looks easy because the parts are few. The sources show where it fails.

A kit for the wrong generation. A retailer's guide says to use the correct gasket kit for the machine's generation. Older and newer Europiccolas differ, and a pressurestat machine is not the same as one without.
A lip ring fitted the wrong way round. The repair guide says lips face the pressure side, so the upper piston ring and the lower one point in opposite directions.
A sieve gasket fitted flat side in. It is asymmetrical and the flat side faces outward.
A circlip fought into place without proper pliers. The guide calls it tricky.
A steam valve tightened too hard. The retailer's guide says not to overtighten the valve seal or seat.
Dry seals. New seals and sliding parts go in lightly greased with food-safe silicone grease.
Scratched chrome from the wrong tool. The guide uses a plastic tool on the lever pins.
A lower cap nut locked with no play. The guide leaves some downward play before the upper nut locks it.

Every one of those is avoidable, and every one produces a machine that leaks or feels wrong after the job. The enthusiast who writes about seal replacement also advises photographing the machine before you start. We do the same and keep the old seals for you to see.

Buying a second-hand La Pavoni in Dubai: what to check

Lever machines are sold second-hand, and some come from abroad. A few checks save an expensive surprise. You can also ask us to look at one before you pay.

CheckWhy
The data plate under the baseThe manual says the mains voltage must match it. A 120 volt machine is wrong for a 230 volt supply
The cable and plugThe manual says not to use the machine if either is damaged, and sends you to a service centre
The switchThe manual says it should sit flush with the frame
The sight glassA retailer's guide says a leaking sight glass means stop using the machine and repair it before reheating
The group and the filter holderLook for leaks at the sieve and a worn edge on the filter holder
The leverIt should move smoothly. A rough lever, per a retailer, points to piston seals, the cylinder or lubrication
The steam valve and tipLook for drips and blocked holes
A pressure gauge, where fittedThe Esperto manual treats the green zone as the ready signal. Check that the needle moves and settles
The safety valveIt should not whistle or leak steam. The Esperto manual treats that as a service matter
The historyAsk whether the seals were ever changed and whether it was descaled, and with what

A machine that heats, makes steam and pulls a shot on the seller's counter has passed the first test. A machine that has been sitting for years probably wants its seals changed, and you can budget for that.

What a La Pavoni repair visit includes

We ask about the symptom, the age of the machine and whether it has had seals before.
We check the data plate against the supply.
We look at the water level, the sight glass, the group, the steam valve and the lever with the machine cold.
We test the element, the thermostat and the pressure behaviour as the fault requires.
We open the group when the seals need replacing and show you the old ones.
You get one price before we fit anything.
After the repair we heat the machine, pull a shot, steam, check the valve and the lever, and explain what to watch.
One month of cover applies.

If the machine needs a full strip on the bench, we take it to the workshop and tell you how long it will be away.

Repair or replace a La Pavoni?

A La Pavoni is designed to be rebuilt. The rule we use for other machines is the same: compare the quote with a new machine of the same class and stop to think at about half of that price.

If a replacement is the sounder choice we say so, and you pay the visit fee only.

What to tell us when you book

The model name and a photo of the data plate under the base.
What it does. leaks, hisses, no steam, slow to heat, stiff lever, no power.
Whether there is a pressure gauge on the machine.
The date of the last service, and if the seals were ever changed.
If you have descaled it, and with what.

If you have tried something from this page, say what, and we continue from there.

While you wait for the technician

A La Pavoni boiler is closed and holds pressure while it is hot. If the safety valve is hissing, steam is escaping or the lever is hard to move, switch the machine off, unplug it and leave it to cool before anyone handles it.

Do not open the fill cap or unscrew the group while the machine is hot.
Do not force a lever that will not move. Leave it where it is and tell us where it stopped.
Once it is cool, photograph the data plate under the base and the pressure gauge, if there is one. We read both before we start.

Frequently asked questions

How much does La Pavoni repair cost in Dubai?

The visit is AED 100 plus VAT and most repairs come to between AED 80 and AED 400. You agree the price before a part is fitted.

Who repairs La Pavoni machines in Dubai?

We do, at homes and offices, normally the same day: message us on WhatsApp at +971 55 209 9785. Ask the seller first if the machine is within its warranty.

How often should I replace the gaskets on a Europiccola?

A retailer's guide says to service from symptoms, not a calendar. Leaks at the group, a loose lever or weeping at the boiler are the signs.

What does a La Pavoni rebuild include?

The sieve gasket, the unit-to-boiler gasket, the piston lip rings, the piston rod seal and, where needed, the steam pipe gaskets and the riser plug, with food-safe silicone grease on the new seals.

Why is my safety valve hissing?

The Esperto manual says the spring may be blocked or the pressure switch out of range, and tells the owner to contact a service centre. Forum users report that the wrong spring for the model can also cause it.

My La Pavoni has no steam. What should I check?

The Esperto manual lists not at pressure, a clogged tip, no water, a pipe not seated and scale. Clear the holes with a needle, add water and check the gauge. If it still fails, message us.

My coffee drips from the group. Is it the gasket?

It may be. The manual first lists a grind that is too fine, too much coffee or overpacking. If the dose and grind are right and it still leaks round the filter holder, the gasket is worn.

The lever rose by itself. Is that a fault?

No. The Europiccola manual says that when the machine is off and cooling, the lever may rise by itself because a vacuum forms in the boiler.

How long should I wait before pulling a shot?

The Esperto manual says about five minutes to reach pressure, and for the group to reach 90 to 95 degrees Celsius. Check your model's manual.

Can I use vinegar to descale a La Pavoni?

The Esperto manual uses white vinegar or bicarbonate of soda for first-use preparation and gives no ongoing procedure. A retailer warns that wrong acids can damage finishes, seals and elements. Ask us before you try it.

Can I run a 120 volt La Pavoni in Dubai?

Not directly. The supply is 230 volts, and the manual says the voltage must match the data plate. Send us the plate photo.

Is it worth repairing an old La Pavoni?

Usually yes. The machine is made from serviceable parts and most faults are worn seals, a valve or an element.
