One Click Dubai technician repairing a Manitowoc ice machine

Overview

One Click Dubai repairs Manitowoc ice machines across Dubai, with a technician sent the same day and within the hour when a kitchen or bar has no ice. We repair Indigo and Indigo NXT machines, the older S and Q series, NEO undercounter machines and Manitowoc flake and nugget machines, including refrigeration faults, with genuine Manitowoc parts.

A Manitowoc cuber decides when to harvest with a probe that touches the water running over the ice, and decides the ice has fallen when a curtain swings open. Most Manitowoc faults come back to those two sensors, the water that feeds the plate, or scale on the nickel-plated evaporator. This page explains the display codes, the probe and curtain, each common fault, the cleaning cycle and the parts that wear.

We also install Manitowoc machines and maintain them under contract.

How a Manitowoc cuber makes and harvests ice

A Manitowoc cuber pumps water from a trough over an upright nickel-plated evaporator grid, where it freezes into a slab of joined cubes. A probe senses when the slab is thick enough, hot gas releases it, and the falling slab pushes a curtain open on its way to the bin.

1
Fill

The water inlet valve fills the trough until the water level probe is satisfied.

2
Prechill and freeze

The compressor chills the evaporator and the pump sends water over it. Ice builds from the back of each cell forward.

3
Bridge

The cubes join across the front in a thin sheet called the bridge. Water flowing over that sheet eventually touches the ice thickness probe.

4
Harvest

After continuous contact for several seconds, the board stops the pump, opens the dump valve to flush the trough, and opens the hot gas valve to warm the evaporator.

5
Release

The slab slides off as one piece, swings the water curtain open and drops into the bin.

6
Reset

The curtain swings shut, its switch tells the board the ice has gone, and the next freeze begins.

7
Bin full

When ice piles high enough to hold the curtain open, the machine stops until ice is removed.

The bridge holding the cubes together should be about 3 mm thick. That one dimension, set by the position of the ice thickness probe, governs batch weight, cube shape and how cleanly the slab releases.

Manitowoc Indigo codes and what they mean

A Manitowoc Indigo ice machine shows a fault as an E code on its display and keeps a log of recent events in its service menu. The meanings below are those commonly published for Indigo machines. The list varies by model and software, so confirm against the display text and the manual for your machine.

CodeMeaningWhere to look
E01Long freeze cycleWater system, dirty condenser, leaking valves, low refrigerant, ice thickness probe
E02Long harvest cycleScale on the evaporator, hot gas valve, curtain switch, low refrigerant
E03Power lossThe machine lost its supply and restarted. Check the circuit if it repeats
E04High condenser temperatureDirty condenser or air filter, failed fan, hot location
E05High pressure control faultAs E04, or an overcharge or restriction
E07Starving expansion valveLow refrigerant charge or a faulty valve
E12Curtain faultCurtain off its pins, magnet missing, switch failed
E19Ice thickness probe faultProbe dirty, wet with scale, miswired or failed
E20Water system faultNo water, inlet valve, water level probe, dump valve leaking
E21 to E24Temperature sensor faults, T1 to T4The named thermistor or its wiring
E25 to E27Bin level probe faultsBin probe, on machines fitted with one
E31Safe modeThe machine is running on timed cycles because a sensor has failed

Reading the event log

The log records how many times each event has occurred and when. One E01 in a month of summer afternoons is a dirty condenser. E01 every cycle is a failed part. Give us the codes and counts when you call, and do not clear the log first.

Safe mode

In safe mode the machine carries on making ice on fixed timings after its thickness probe or curtain switch has failed. Ice quality suffers and the batches are inconsistent, but the bar keeps running. It is a prompt to book a repair, not a state to leave the machine in.

Older machines without a display

S and Q series machines signal through lights on the control board and store safety limit trips, which are read by a sequence on the toggle switch. Safety limit 1 is a long freeze and safety limit 2 is a long harvest, matching E01 and E02.

Manitowoc ice machine troubleshooting: not making ice

A Manitowoc ice machine not making ice is off or in the wrong mode, short of water, stopped by its curtain, or has a refrigeration fault. Look at what it is doing before touching anything.

Not making ice after cleaning

A Manitowoc that stops after a clean has usually been put back together wrongly. Check that the machine is switched back to ice mode, the water is on, the water curtain is hanging on both pins with its magnet facing the switch, the ice thickness probe is clipped in and plugged in with its gap reset, the water level probe is in its holder, the distribution tube is seated with its holes facing the evaporator, and the trough is in place. Probes that are still wet with cleaner can also give a false reading for the first cycle.

Our guide to a commercial ice machine not making ice covers the general checks.

Manitowoc not turning on, and display not working

A Manitowoc ice machine not turning on, or with a blank display, has lost power to its control board or has a failed board or display. It is an electrical fault, and the ice-making parts are not involved.

SymptomCheckRepair
Completely deadBreaker, isolator, plug and the supply voltage at the machineRestore the supply
Dead after a power surge or stormFuse on the control board, the board's transformerReplace the fuse. Find why it blew
Display blank, machine runningDisplay cable loose, or the display module failedReseat the cable. New display

Turns on, shuts off within secondsHigh pressure control open, or low voltage as the compressor startsFind the cause. Do not bypass
Display works, nothing else doesMachine is in a programmed off period, or the curtain is openCheck the schedule and the curtain

Water and electronics share a small cabinet in these machines. A display that failed after a deep clean has often had water sprayed into its connector. Let it dry fully with the power off before assuming the worst.

The ice thickness probe

The Manitowoc ice thickness probe is a hinged metal sensor that hangs in front of the evaporator. When the ice bridge has grown enough for water flowing over it to touch the probe continuously, the board starts harvest. Its position sets the bridge thickness.

Probe conditionEffect
Set too close to the evaporatorEarly harvest, thin bridge, small batches, cubes fall as loose singles
Set too far awayThick bridge, heavy slab, slow or failed release, long freeze faults
Coated with scaleScale holds a film of water, so the probe signals early or erratically
Wire broken or unpluggedNo signal. The machine freezes until a timer or safety ends the cycle
Probe bracket knocked during cleaningGap changed, batch weight changes overnight
1
Run a freeze cycle and look at the slab

The bridge between cubes should be about 3 mm.

2
Switch off before adjusting

And let the plate clear.

3
Turn the adjusting screw

A small turn moves the probe toward or away from the evaporator. Toward makes thinner ice, away makes thicker.

4
Check the probe hangs freely

And that its wire and bracket do not touch the evaporator.

5
Run another cycle and check again

One adjustment at a time.

Clean the probe at every descale, with ice machine cleaner and a soft cloth, and rinse it. A probe that reads wrongly when clean, dry and correctly set is replaced.

Not dropping ice: harvest faults

A Manitowoc ice machine not dropping ice has formed a slab and cannot release it. Scale on the evaporator is the leading cause, followed by too thick a bridge and a hot gas valve that is not doing its job.

What you findCauseRepair
Slab clinging to a dull, rough evaporatorScaleDescale with a nickel-safe cleaner

Never lever a slab off with a tool. Nickel plating is thin, and a scratch through it starts the flaking that ends the evaporator's life. Switch off and let it melt.

The water curtain and bin switch

The water curtain is the hinged plastic flap in front of the evaporator. It keeps water in the trough during freeze, and a magnet on it works a switch that tells the board when ice has dropped and when the bin is full.

SymptomCauseFix
Machine will not start, bin emptyCurtain off a pin, hanging open, or its magnet missingRehang. Replace the curtain if the magnet has gone

Bin overfills, ice backs up to the evaporatorSwitch stuck closed, so the machine never sees the bin as fullNew switch

Twin-evaporator machines have two curtains and two switches, and either one can stop the machine.

Water system: inlet valve, dump valve, pump and level probe

The Manitowoc water system fills a trough to a set level, circulates that water during freeze and flushes it at harvest. Four parts do the work, and each has a recognisable way of failing.

PartJobWhen it fails
Water inlet valveFills the troughStuck shut: no water, water fault code. Leaking through: trough overfills, warm water dilutes the freeze, long freeze
Water level probe, or a float valve on some small undercounter machinesTells the board when the trough is fullScaled or failed: overfill, underfill or a machine that fills and stops
Water pumpCirculates water over the evaporatorWeak or seized: dry cells, uneven ice, noise
Dump valve, a solenoid valveFlushes mineral-heavy water at harvestStuck shut: scale builds quickly, cloudy ice. Leaking: water drains away during freeze, thin ice, long freeze
Distribution tubeSpreads water evenly across the top of the evaporatorBlocked holes: dry columns, cubes missing in vertical strips
Water troughHolds the charge of waterCracked or misplaced: leak inside the cabinet

A Manitowoc water inlet valve has a strainer at its inlet. Without a filter ahead of the machine, grit collects there and the fill slows until the board reports a water fault. A leaking dump valve is the fault most often missed: listen at the drain during freeze. Water running then means the valve is passing.

Leaking water

A Manitowoc ice machine leaking water has a drain or curtain problem in most cases. Purge water leaves at every harvest and bin melt drains all day.

Manitowoc ice machine cleaning: descaler, sanitiser and the clean cycle

Manitowoc ice machine cleaning uses two products in two separate cycles: an ice machine cleaner, which is a descaler that removes mineral scale, and a sanitiser, which disinfects. Manitowoc evaporators are nickel plated, so the cleaner must be nickel safe. Use the maker's cleaner and sanitiser at the quantities in the manual for your model.

1
Remove the ice

Wait for a harvest to finish, or switch off and let the plate clear. Empty the bin if it is being cleaned too.

2
Start the clean cycle

Press the clean button, or select clean from the menu on Indigo machines. On older machines move the toggle to clean.

3
Add the cleaner when prompted

The machine fills and starts circulating. Add the measured cleaner to the trough when the display asks for the chemical, or once water is flowing over the evaporator on older machines.

4
Let the cycle finish

It circulates, then rinses several times automatically. Do not interrupt it.

5
Switch off and strip the water parts

Curtain, ice thickness probe, water level probe, distribution tube, trough and pump. Soak and brush them in cleaner solution, then rinse.

6
Wipe the evaporator surround and the cabinet

With cleaner solution and a soft cloth or nylon brush. No metal tools or abrasive pads.

7
Sanitise the parts and refit them

Then run a second clean cycle with sanitiser in place of cleaner.

8
Clean the bin

Liner, door, baffle and scoop, then sanitise.

9
Wash the air filter, clean the condenser, change the water filter

Then return the machine to ice mode and discard the first batch.

Manitowoc asks for cleaning and sanitising at least every six months. Kitchens with yeast, flour or grease in the air need it more often, and slime on the curtain or the bin ceiling is the sign that the interval is too long.

Cleaning a Manitowoc storage bin

B series bins such as the B570 are cleaned empty: remove the ice, wash every surface including the door track and the baffle with cleaner solution, rinse, apply sanitiser and let it air dry. Check the bin drain runs freely while it is empty.

Air filter, condenser and water filter

Three filters and coils decide how hard a Manitowoc has to work. All three are quick to look after and expensive to ignore.

ItemWhereCare
Air filterBehind the front louvres on air-cooled Indigo machinesWash in warm soapy water about monthly in a kitchen, dry and refit. Do not run the machine without it
CondenserBehind the air filterBrush and vacuum when dust or grease shows. Grease needs a coil cleaner
Water filterOn the supply ahead of the machineChange about every six months, or when the gauge falls

A blocked air filter is the usual reason for high condenser temperature faults and for summer production falling away. A neglected water filter causes water faults and small ice. Neither needs a technician.

Parts we replace on Manitowoc machines

We fit genuine Manitowoc parts, specified from the model and serial number. These are the ones we replace most.

PartSigns of failure
Ice thickness probeWrong bridge thickness, early or missed harvest, probe fault code
Water level probeFill faults, overfilling
Curtain and curtain switchMachine idle with an empty bin, or overfilling
Water inlet valveNo fill, slow fill or constant fill
Dump valveThin ice and long freeze, or fast scaling
Water pumpDry plate, uneven ice
Display and control boardBlank screen, dead buttons, wrong sequence
ThermistorsSensor fault codes, odd harvest timing
Condenser fan motorHigh temperature faults
Hot gas valveNo release, or long freeze
Compressor and start componentsHums and trips, runs without cooling
Dispenser partsDispense motor, chute sensor and agitator on ice dispensers
EvaporatorPlating failure or a leak

A Manitowoc ice machine compressor is rarely the first thing to fail. When one does, the cause is usually years of running against a dirty condenser, and the condenser, fan and charge are all checked before a new compressor is fitted.

Installation and maintenance contracts

We install Manitowoc ice machines and maintain them under contract. If you are choosing a new machine, we can advise on capacity and type for the site and fit and commission it.

Air-cooled machines need the clearances in the manual and a location away from cooking heat.
Each machine needs a dedicated water supply with a shut-off tap and a filter, and a dedicated electrical circuit.
Machine and bin drains run separately, with fall and an air gap.
The machine must be level, or the slab hangs on one side.
At commissioning we set the bridge thickness, time the cycles and set the clock and any cleaning reminder.

A maintenance contract covers the scheduled descale and sanitise, air and water filter care, condenser cleaning, a probe and curtain check and timed cycles, with a written record of each visit. The number of visits is set to suit the site and written into the contract. See commercial ice machine repair.

What Manitowoc repair costs, and when to replace

Most Manitowoc repairs are sensors, valves and cleaning. The decision to replace turns almost entirely on the condition of the evaporator.
