Overview

One Click Dubai repairs Sub-Zero ice makers at home across Dubai, with a technician sent the same day. We repair the ice makers in Sub-Zero built-in, integrated and PRO refrigerators and freezers, the UC-15I undercounter ice maker, and the cooling faults that sit behind many ice complaints, including sealed system work. We fit genuine Sub-Zero parts.

A Sub-Zero is built to be repaired, not replaced, and most are still in service after fifteen or twenty years. Its ice maker is a conventional unit placed in an unusually well-engineered freezer, so when ice stops, the cause is usually something simple around it: the shut-off arm, the water supply, a frozen fill tube or a freezer running a few degrees warm because the condenser is dusty. This page follows the maker's own order of checks, then goes further into the parts and the refrigeration.

Sub-Zero ice maker repair in Dubai: the short answers

Sub-Zero ice maker repair in Dubai from One Click Dubai starts with a AED 100 diagnostic visit, plus VAT. The technician checks the freezer temperature, the condenser, the water supply and the ice maker's cycle, then gives a fixed price before any repair.

QuestionAnswer
How soon can you come? The same day, at any hour
Which Sub-Zero models?Classic (BI) built-in, Designer integrated columns and drawers, PRO 36 and PRO 48, older 500, 600 and 700 series, and UC-15I undercounter ice makers
What do you repair?Ice maker assemblies, shut-off arms, inlet valves, fill tubes, filters and housings, ice dispensers, control boards, fans, defrost parts and the sealed system
Which parts?Genuine Sub-Zero parts, matched to the model and serial number
Is it repaired at home?Yes. Built-in units are serviced in place
What does the visit cost?AED 100 plus VAT, with no night or weekend surcharge
Is the repair covered?Yes. One month on parts and labour

The model and serial number are on a rating plate inside the unit, usually near the top hinge of the refrigerator section or on the upper frame. Send a photo when you book. Sub-Zero parts are specified by serial number range.

Sub-Zero ice maker troubleshooting: check these first

A Sub-Zero ice maker not working should be checked in the order Sub-Zero itself gives, because the first items cost nothing and account for a large share of calls.

CheckWhat to doWhy
Has it had 24 hours? After installation, a power cut or switching the ice maker on, wait a full dayThe freezer and the ice maker must both reach temperature before the first harvest
Is the ice maker switched on?Look for the ice maker key or indicator on the control panelIt is switched off for cleaning and holidays and then forgotten
Is the freezer cold enough? It should be at or below minus 15 degrees C, and minus 18 is the recommended settingThe ice maker will not cycle in a warmer freezer
Is the condenser clean?Vacuum it if it has not been done in the last 6 to 12 monthsA dusty condenser raises the freezer temperature just enough to stop ice production
Is the ice bin fully in?Push the bin or drawer homeA switch stops the ice maker when the bin is out of position
Is the shut-off arm down? The metal arm beside the ice maker must be free to dropArm up means stop
Is water reaching the unit?Check the supply tap. Reseat the water filterA filter that is not fully engaged blocks the flow
Is the fill tube frozen?Look at the tube that feeds the ice makerIce in the tube means no water enters
Switch the ice maker off and onAt the control panelThis resets the cycle

If all nine are right and there is still no ice after a day, the ice maker, the water valve or a control has failed and the unit needs a technician.

How the Sub-Zero ice maker works

The Sub-Zero freezer ice maker fills a metal mould with water, freezes it, warms the mould slightly and sweeps the crescent-shaped cubes out with rotating fingers. A shut-off arm rides up on the ice in the bin and stops production when the bin is full.

1
Fill

The water valve opens for a few seconds and water runs through the fill tube into the mould.

2
Freeze

A thermostat in the mould waits for it to reach freezing temperature.

3
Release

A small heater under the mould frees the cubes.

4
Eject

A motor turns the ejector fingers through a full circle, lifting the cubes over the side.

5
Sense

The shut-off arm rises and falls with the ejector. If it cannot drop back, the bin is full.

6
Refill

If the arm drops, the valve opens again.

Built-in Sub-Zero refrigerators use dual refrigeration: the freezer and the refrigerator each have their own compressor and evaporator. That is why one section can fail while the other is perfect, and why an ice problem with a slightly warm freezer is investigated as a freezer cooling fault and not as an ice maker fault.

The shut-off arm: stuck, loose or broken

The Sub-Zero ice maker shut-off arm is a wire lever that tells the ice maker when the bin is full. If it is held up, the ice maker stops. If it has come off, the ice maker never stops. It is the most common single reason a working Sub-Zero makes no ice.

SymptomCauseFix
No ice, arm in the raised positionArm lifted and latched up, on purpose or by accidentLower it
No ice, arm will not dropIce or the bin is holding it up, or it is bentClear the bin. Straighten or replace the arm
Arm moves less than it shouldIt should travel about an inch, roughly 25 mm, up and downCheck its pivot and the linkage inside the ice maker
Ice overflowing the binArm detached, or the rudder arm missingRefit or replace the arm
Arm hangs loose, no resistanceInternal linkage or spring brokenNew arm, or a new ice maker where the linkage is not sold separately
Ice maker runs with the arm upSwitch inside the ice maker failedNew ice maker

Sub-Zero ice maker arm replacement is a short job where the arm alone has bent or snapped. On some models a plastic rudder arm clips to the shut-off arm to extend its reach into the bin, and it can be knocked off when the bin is pulled out. If it is missing, check the bottom of the bin for it and clip it back on.

Sub-Zero not making ice: water supply faults

A Sub-Zero that is cold enough and switched on, with the arm down, and still makes no ice has a water fault. The supply, the filter, the valve and the fill tube are checked in that order.

SymptomLikely causeRepair
No ice, mould drySupply tap closed, filter not seated, valve failed or fill tube frozenTrace the water to where it stops
Small or hollow cubesLow water pressure or a restricted filterNew filter. Check supply pressure
Cubes joined in a sheetOverfill: valve slow to closeNew valve

Ice tastes or smells staleOld filter, old ice, or the bin needs washingNew filter. Discard the ice. Wash the bin
Water dispenser also weak, on models with oneSupply or filterRestore the supply

The filter

Sub-Zero built-in models have a water filter behind the grille or inside the refrigerator, and a panel indicator that asks for replacement. Use a Sub-Zero filter. After fitting, the first few batches of ice should be thrown away. A filter that is not turned or pushed fully home will stop the water altogether, which is why reseating it is on the maker's checklist.

The supply line

These units are built in, so the supply line and its shut-off tap are often in an adjacent cabinet or behind the plinth. Know where the tap is. A kink formed when the unit was pushed back into its housing can cut the flow for years without stopping it, and shows only as small cubes.

Ice maker frozen, jammed or leaking

A Sub-Zero ice maker that is frozen up or leaking has a fill problem: too much water, water at the wrong time, or water missing the mould.

What you seeCauseRepair
Cubes frozen into the mould, ejector stalledMould heater or thermostat failed, or a cube wedged under the fingersClear a jam. New ice maker if it will not cycle
Solid lump in the binIce partly thawed and refrozen: drawer left ajar, power cut, long disuseEmpty the bin

Icicle on the fill tubeValve seepingNew valve
Water under the unitSupply line or valve leaking, or a blocked defrost drainTrace and repair
Frost on everything in the freezerDoor or drawer gasket not sealingAdjust or replace the gasket

Sub-Zero door gasket replacement is worth doing as soon as a gasket is torn or no longer grips. A leaking gasket lets in humid air, which frosts the evaporator, warms the freezer and stops the ice maker. Closing the door on a sheet of paper is a fair test: it should be gripped all the way round.

Sub-Zero ice dispenser faults

Sub-Zero models with a through-the-door ice and water dispenser add an auger, a chute door and a dispenser control to the ice maker. When ice is in the bin and none is delivered, the fault is in those parts.

SymptomCauseRepair
Motor runs, no iceIce clumped in the binEmpty and break up

Ice chute door stays open or shutChute door actuatorReplace
Water dispenses, ice does notAuger motor or its driveReplace
Ice dispenses, water does notWater valve outlet or a frozen door lineValve. Thaw

Interior lights that stay off across the whole refrigerator are a separate fault, usually a door switch, the lamp module or the control board, and we repair those in the same visit.

UC-15I undercounter ice maker

The Sub-Zero UC-15I is a 15-inch undercounter machine that makes clear ice on a cold plate and stores it in an insulated bin that is not refrigerated. It works like a small commercial ice machine, and its faults are different from those of a freezer ice maker.

SymptomCheck or causeRepair

No ice or very littleSupply tap, kinked supply line, filter, room too hot, condenser blockedRestore water and airflow

Testing the drain

Sub-Zero's own test for the drain is to pour a cup of water into the bin behind the curtain and watch it leave. If it stands, the drain line is kinked or blocked, or the pump on the UC-15IP is not running. A blocked drain is the usual cause of water on the floor in front of one of these machines.

UC-15IP filter replacement

The P in UC-15IP means the unit has a built-in drain pump, for kitchens where the drain is higher than the machine's outlet. The filter is replaced the same way on both versions. Change it when the indicator asks.

The front grille at floor level is the machine's air path. A plinth panel fitted across it will cut production and overheat the compressor.

Freezer not cold enough, or freezer not working but the refrigerator is

A Sub-Zero freezer not working while the refrigerator section is fine is a consequence of dual refrigeration: the freezer has its own compressor, evaporator, fan and defrost system, and any of them can fail alone. The ice maker is usually the first thing to show it.

FindingLikely causeRepair
Freezer a few degrees warm, compressor running constantlyDirty condenserClean the condenser
Frost covering the rear panel or evaporator coverDefrost heater, defrost thermostat or control faultReplace the failed part
No air movement in the freezerEvaporator fan motor failed or icedNew fan motor. Fix the frost cause

Compressor runs, evaporator only partly frostedLow refrigerant from a leak, or a restrictionSealed system repair
Compressor silentControl board, relay or wiringElectrical diagnosis
Freezer warm after a door was left ajarFrost load on the evaporatorManual defrost, then monitor

The same logic applies in reverse to a Sub-Zero refrigerator not cooling with a healthy freezer. If the whole unit is dead with no lights, check the breaker and the unit's own power key before anything else.

Condenser cleaning

Sub-Zero asks for the condenser to be cleaned every 6 to 12 months, and a blocked condenser is behind more Sub-Zero ice complaints than any failed part. Dust and kitchen grease on the coil stop the unit shedding heat, the freezer drifts warm, and the ice maker stops cycling.

1
Switch the unit off

At the control panel or the breaker.

2
Open the grille

On built-in models the condenser is behind the flip-up or lift-off grille above the doors. On integrated and undercounter models it is behind the kick plate at floor level.

3
Vacuum the fins

With a soft brush attachment, moving in the direction of the fins. They bend easily and are sharp.

4
Clean the fan blade and the surrounding area

Grease-bound dust may need a coil brush.

5
Close the grille and switch on

Allow 24 hours for the freezer to recover fully.

In a home with pets, or where the kitchen opens to the outside, do it every six months. We clean the condenser as part of every Sub-Zero visit.

Sealed system repairs: compressor replacement and refrigerant

Sealed system repair is work on the refrigeration circuit itself: finding a leak, replacing a compressor, evaporator, condenser or drier, and recharging with refrigerant. We carry out this work on Sub-Zero units with genuine parts.

1
Confirm the diagnosis

Temperatures, compressor current and the frost pattern on the evaporator are checked before the system is opened.

2
Recover the refrigerant

Into a cylinder.

3
Repair

Replace the compressor or the leaking component and fit a new filter drier.

4
Pressure test

With dry nitrogen.

5
Evacuate

To a deep vacuum to remove air and moisture.

6
Charge by weight

To the figure on the rating plate, with the refrigerant it specifies.

7
Run and record

The section is monitored down to temperature.

A request for a freon recharge is really a request for a leak repair. A refrigeration circuit is sealed for life and does not use up its gas. If the charge is low, it has leaked, and adding more without fixing the leak gives a few weeks of cooling at most.

Sub-Zero compressor replacement is a large job, and on these refrigerators it is generally worth doing: the cabinet, doors and controls are built to outlast several compressors, and a new built-in unit of the same size costs many times the repair. Some sealed system work is done in our workshop where access in the kitchen is too tight.

Where the ice maker is on each Sub-Zero range

Sub-Zero has fitted ice makers to several generations of product, and access differs on each. Knowing the range helps us bring the right assembly and allow the right time.

RangeWhere the ice maker isNotes for repair
Classic built-in (BI series), over-and-underIn the freezer drawer at the bottom, with a lift-out ice binThe drawer must close fully for the ice maker to run
Classic built-in, side by sideAt the top of the freezer side, with a bin below, and a door dispenser on some modelsDispenser models add an auger and chute
Designer integrated columns and drawersIn the freezer column or drawerPanels match the kitchen, so the unit is identified from the plate inside
PRO 36 and PRO 48In the freezer drawer or freezer sideHeavier drawer assemblies, so replacement takes longer
Older 500 series (532, 550, 561, 590), 600 series (632, 642, 650, 685, 690, 695) and 700 series (700BR, 700TC, 736TC)In the freezer section or drawerParts are specified by serial number. Many of these units are still worth repairing
UC-15I and UC-15IPThe whole appliance is the ice makerClear-ice machine with its own filter, drain and cleaning cycle

On built-in models, removing the ice bin or leaving the freezer drawer out of position pauses ice making. If the ice maker stopped straight after the freezer was reorganised, check the bin and drawer before anything else.

Looking after a Sub-Zero ice maker

Sub-Zero ice makers need little attention, and what they need is regular.

Vacuum the condenser every 6 to 12 months.
Change the water filter when the indicator asks, with a Sub-Zero filter, and discard the first batches of ice afterwards.
Keep the freezer at minus 18 degrees C.
Use or discard the ice. Ice that sits for weeks takes on odours and fuses together.
Wash the ice bin with mild soap and water a few times a year and dry it fully before refitting.
Switch the ice maker off and close the supply tap before a long absence, and empty the bin.
On the UC-15I, run the cleaning procedure in the use and care guide with the recommended cleaner, and keep the floor-level grille clear.
Check door and drawer gaskets for tears once a year.

Sub-Zero ice maker replacement

Sub-Zero ice maker replacement is needed when the unit will not cycle with the freezer cold, the arm down and power present, or when its mould coating is flaking into the ice. We fit the genuine assembly for the unit's serial number.

FindingReplace the ice maker?
Will not cycle, freezer at minus 18, arm downYes
Black or grey flakes in the iceYes. The mould coating is worn
Ejector stalls, mould heater open circuitYes
Cycles, mould stays dryNo. Valve, tube or supply
Freezer above minus 15No. Cooling fault first
Arm bent or rudder arm missingNo. Arm or rudder arm

On most models the ice maker is held by two screws and a plug behind the bin, and the job takes under an hour. PRO 48 and drawer models take longer because the drawer assembly comes out first.

What Sub-Zero ice maker repair costs
