Overview
A washing machine not filling with water is being starved somewhere between the wall tap and the drum. In order of likelihood: the tap is closed or the supply is off, the inlet hose is kinked, the small mesh filter where the hose meets the machine is clogged, the building's water pressure is too low, or the electric inlet valve has failed. The first four can be checked and put right at home.
There is a second group of faults that looks the same from the front of the machine: the door has not locked, or a programme setting is holding the start, so the machine never asks for water. This guide separates the two, gives the checks in order, and then covers the related fill faults: filling too slowly, not stopping, filling when switched off, and filling and draining at once. The checks are the same on every make. For a repair, see washing machine repair in Dubai.
Washing machine not filling: the short answer
Do the first four before anything else. Together they account for most calls that end with no part being fitted.
How a washing machine fills
Knowing the sequence makes the fault easy to place. Each step depends on the one before.
The control checks the door.
The control waits for confirmation. Without it, nothing else happens.
An electromagnet lifts a small plunger. You hear a faint buzz or click at the back.
The valve does not pump. It only opens. The water has to arrive under its own pressure.
Different coils of the valve direct it through the prewash, main wash or softener compartments.
Air trapped in a small chamber at the bottom of the tub is compressed and pushes on a pressure sensor through a thin hose.
When it reaches the target, the control switches the valve off.
And the machine tops up as the laundry absorbs water.
Modern machines use far less water than older ones. A front loader on a normal cotton wash may show no water at the door glass at all, only wet laundry. That is by design and is often mistaken for a fill fault.
Is it really not filling?
Before chasing a fault, confirm there is one. Several normal behaviours look like a machine that is not taking water.
Cold if possible.
A buzz and the sound of running water mean it is filling.
You should see water streaming into one compartment.
Go to the tap and hose checks.
Go to the door and settings checks.
That one distinction, valve sound or no valve sound, halves the list of possible causes.
Check 1: the tap and the water supply
Behind or beside it, in the next cabinet, or under the sink. It may be a small lever valve or a round handle.
A lever is open when it lies along the pipe and closed when it lies across. A round handle opens anticlockwise.
Run the cold tap at the kitchen sink. If nothing comes, the supply to the flat or the building is off.
Under a sink there may be separate valves for the sink, the dishwasher, a filter and the washing machine. Follow the hose.
A tap that has not been moved for years can stick part open.
After any water shutdown in the building, run a nearby tap for a minute before using the machine. The first water through carries air and sediment, and it is better down the sink than in the valve.
Check 2: the inlet hose
The inlet hose is the braided or grey hose from the tap to the back of the machine. Hot and cold fill machines have two.
Enough to see behind it.
Look for a sharp bend, a twist, or a section trapped behind a foot or against the wall.
And leave enough room behind the machine for a gentle curve.
A strong jet shows the tap is delivering.
A strong flow shows the hose is clear. A trickle means the hose is blocked or has collapsed inside.
Leak-stop (aqua-stop) hoses
Some hoses have a safety device at the tap end, a plastic housing larger than a normal connector, sometimes with a small window. If the inner hose leaks, the device shuts off the water permanently and the window usually turns red. It cannot be reset. A tripped hose stops all water and is replaced as a unit. On machines where the device is electrical and built into the machine's own hose, replacement is a job for a technician.
Check 3: the inlet filter
Where the inlet hose screws onto the machine there is a small mesh filter, a thimble of plastic gauze sitting in the valve's inlet. It catches sand and scale from the pipes. When it clogs, the machine fills slowly and then not at all.
And unplug the machine.
By hand. A little water will run out.
You will see the mesh. Clean mesh is pale and open. Blocked mesh is brown, sandy or furred.
Grip the small tab in its centre and pull straight. Do not twist hard: the valve body is plastic.
Under a tap, with an old toothbrush, until light shows through all of it.
Some hoses have a second mesh washer at the tap end. Clean that too.
Make sure the rubber washer is in the connector.
Then run a programme.
If the filter clogs again within weeks, the problem is the water coming in. In a villa, have the tank cleaned. In an apartment, tell the building maintenance team. A small in-line sediment filter on the washing machine tap protects the valve.
Check 4: door, lock and settings
If you heard no buzz from the valve when the machine should have been filling, the machine never asked for water. The reason is usually at the door or in the settings.
Confirmed door codes are Samsung dC, dE or dS, LG dE, Bosch and Siemens E16 or F16, Whirlpool F5 E2 or LdL, and Miele F34. If the machine is completely dead, with no lights, that is a power fault and belongs in our guide to a washing machine that won't start.
Low water pressure
The inlet valve relies on water pressure to work. Makers specify a minimum, commonly around 0.5 bar, and a maximum, commonly around 10 bar. Below the minimum the machine fills too slowly, times out and shows a fill error. The valve can also fail to close cleanly at very low pressure.
A simple flow test
Put the inlet hose in a bucket and open the tap fully for exactly one minute. Makers' figures vary, but a healthy supply delivers several litres, often eight or more, in that time. One or two litres is too little for the machine to fill within its time limit.
A washing machine cannot be adjusted to work on low pressure. The supply has to be put right.
The inlet valve
If the tap delivers, the hose is clear, the filter is clean and the pressure is adequate, the valve is next. It is an electrically operated tap with one, two or three coils, fixed inside the back of the machine where the hose connects.
Valves are not repaired. A replacement is matched to the machine by its number of coils, their voltage, its flow rate and its mounting. The job is short. What it involves is on our washing machine parts page.
Pressure switch, wiring and control faults
When the valve itself is sound and still does not open, something upstream is not telling it to.
That last one is common and easily missed. If the machine has had a small leak, the float in the base tray holds the inlet off and may run the drain pump. Confirmed leak codes are Samsung LC, LE or 1C, LG AE, Bosch and Siemens E23 or F23, and Miele F138. The machine will not fill again until the tray is dry and the leak has been dealt with.
Fills and drains at the same time
If you hear water entering and water running to the drain together, and the cycle seems never to end, the machine is siphoning. The water is leaving through the drain hose as fast as it arrives.
Siphoning is an installation fault, usually introduced when a machine is moved or a new sink is fitted. The machine fills for a long time, washes poorly, uses far more water than it should and may end with a fill error. The full routing rules are in our guide to a washing machine not draining.
Fills too slowly, too much, or when it is switched off
Confirmed fill codes are Samsung 4C, 4E or nF, LG IE, Bosch and Siemens E17 or F17 and, on newer displays, E:30 -10 or E:92 -01, Whirlpool LF, Lo FL or F8 E1, and Miele F10 or Check inlet. Confirmed overfill codes are Samsung OC, OE or OF and LG FE.
Top load machines
Top loaders fill in the same way, with a few differences.
On twin tubs you fill the wash tub by hand or from a tap through a short hose, and you set the level yourself. If water will not stay in, the drain selector is in the wrong position or its valve is leaking.
What not to do
When to call a technician, and what it costs
Call when the tap, hose, filter and pressure are all good and the machine still does not fill, when it will not stop filling, when water enters while it is off, or when a leak or fill code returns.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my washing machine not filling with water?
The tap is closed, the inlet hose is kinked, the inlet filter is clogged, the pressure is low, the door has not locked or the inlet valve has failed. Check them in that order.
I cannot see any water in my front loader. Is it broken?
Probably not. Efficient machines use so little water that none shows at the glass. Listen for water at the drawer in the first minute.
The machine hums and no water comes in. Why?
The valve is opening and no water is reaching it: closed tap, kinked hose, blocked filter or no pressure. If all are good, the valve is jammed.
Where is the inlet filter?
In the water inlet at the back of the machine, where the hose screws on. Pull it out with pliers and rinse it.
Why is my washing machine filling so slowly?
A partly blocked inlet filter, a tap not fully open, a kinked hose or low water pressure.
Why does it fill and drain at the same time?
It is siphoning through the drain hose. Fix the hose so it rises to the height the manual gives and is not pushed far into the standpipe.
Why is water coming into the drum when the machine is off?
The inlet valve is not sealing. Close the tap and have the valve replaced.
Why will it not stop filling?
The valve is stuck open or the level sensor has failed. Close the tap immediately.
Can I fill the machine with a bucket?
No. The level will be wrong and the machine may not heat or wash correctly.
What water pressure does a washing machine need?
Makers commonly give a minimum of about 0.5 bar. Check the manual for your model.
How much does an inlet valve cost to replace in Dubai?
Published market ranges are about AED 150 to 300 fitted.
