One Click Dubai technician replacing cracked glass on a ceramic hob

Overview

One Click Dubai replaces cracked and broken cooktop glass at home across Dubai, with a technician sent the same day to assess it and make it safe. We replace the glass on ceramic hobs, induction hobs, gas-on-glass hobs and the glass tops of freestanding stoves and ranges, with original glass for the model.

If the glass on your hob has cracked, the first thing to know is that it should not be used, and the second is that the glass cannot be repaired. It is replaced as a panel. Whether that is worth doing depends on the hob, because the glass is the most expensive single part of it. This page explains why hobs crack, how to tell a crack from a scratch or a stain, how replacement is done, how long the glass takes to arrive, what decides the cost and when a new hob is the better answer.

Glass cooktop replacement in Dubai: the short answers

Glass cooktop replacement in Dubai from One Click Dubai starts with a AED 100 diagnostic visit, plus VAT. The technician identifies the hob, checks whether anything beneath the glass has been damaged, and gives a fixed price for the glass and fitting before it is ordered.

Is a cracked hob safe to use?

A cracked glass hob is not safe to use, and appliance makers say the same in their own guidance: switch the appliance off and disconnect it from the supply. The reasons differ by type of hob.

Hob typeWhy a crack is dangerous
Ceramic electricLiquid from a boil-over can run through the crack onto live elements and wiring. That risks electric shock and a short circuit
InductionThe same, with high-voltage electronics directly beneath. A crack also lets steam and grease into the boards
Gas on glassThe panel carries the pan supports and is heated unevenly by the burners. A crack can run across the panel suddenly, and toughened glass can shatter
AnyA crack grows with each heating and cooling cycle. A hairline today is a break next week
1
Switch the hob off at the cooker switch or the breaker

Not only at its own controls. On gas hobs, close the gas isolation valve as well.

2
Do not cook on it

Including on the zones away from the crack.

3
Cover it if there are children in the house

With a board or a thick towel, once it is cold.

4
Do not tape, glue or seal it

And do not try to remove the glass yourself. The edges are sharp and components are bonded to it.

5
Photograph the damage and the rating plate

And send both when you book.

A chipped outer edge that has not started a crack is less urgent, and it should still be looked at, because edge chips are where cracks begin.

Why cooktop glass cracks

Hob glass is a glass-ceramic made to tolerate very high temperatures and rapid heating. It is strong against heat and weaker against impact and against stress at its edges. Four causes account for nearly every crack.

CauseHow it happensWhat the crack looks like
ImpactA jar, a spice bottle, a pan lid or a heavy pan dropped from a cupboard aboveA star or cobweb pattern spreading from a point, often with a small chip at the centre
Edge stressThe worktop cut-out is too tight, the hob is clamped unevenly, or the worktop has moved or swollenA crack running in from an edge or a corner, with no impact point
Thermal shock and overheatingA pan boiled dry, an oversized pan trapping heat over the surround, cold liquid on a very hot zone, or a hot lid sealing itself to the glassA crack across or around a zone
Bonded spillsSugar, jam or melted plastic left to cool on the glass contracts and pulls a flake out of the surfacePitting or a shallow crater, which can start a crack
WeightStanding or kneeling on the hob, or resting a heavy object on itA long crack from the load point
A fault under the glassAn element running uncontrolled because its limiter has failedA crack over one zone. The cause must be fixed with the glass

The pattern matters because it tells us whether simply fitting new glass will last. A crack from edge stress will return unless the cut-out is eased, and a crack from an overheating element will return unless the element is replaced.

Crack, chip, scratch or stain?

Not every mark on a glass hob is damage, and not all damage needs new glass. This table separates them.

What you seeWhat it isSafe to use?Remedy
A line you can feel with a fingernail, possibly branchingCrackNoNew glass
A crater or a missing flake with sharp edgesChipNo if it is in a cooking zone or has a line running from itNew glass. A small edge chip can be assessed
Fine lines you can see and barely feelScratchesYesCannot be removed. Cosmetic
A rough or dull patchPitting from sugar or abrasionYes if shallowCosmetic. New glass if deep
Grey, silver or coppery smearsMetal rubbed off aluminium or copper pan basesYesCeramic hob cleaner removes them
White rings or a cloudy bloomLimescale or mineral deposits from boiled-over waterYesHob cleaner, or a little white vinegar on a cold hob
Rainbow or dark discolourationBurnt-on residue, or heat stainingYesScraper and hob cleaner. Some heat staining is permanent
Brown crustBurnt-on foodYesSoften, then a razor scraper held flat
Printing worn away around a zoneAbrasive cleaningYesCosmetic

If you are unsure whether a line is a scratch or a crack, look at it from underneath if you can, or wet it: water creeps into a crack and makes it stand out. When in doubt, treat it as a crack.

Can cracked cooktop glass be repaired?

Cracked cooktop glass cannot be repaired. There is no filler, resin or adhesive that restores the strength of glass-ceramic or survives the temperature of a cooking zone, and makers supply the glass as a replacement part for that reason.

Windscreen-type resin kits are for laminated glass at ordinary temperatures. They burn off on a hob.
High-temperature sealants bridge a gap. They do not join the glass, and the crack carries on growing beneath.
Scratch polishing kits can soften the look of light scratches. They cannot remove them, and aggressive polishing leaves a visible dull area.
A cracked panel has lost its strength across its whole width, not only at the crack.

So the choice is between a new glass panel and a new hob. The next sections explain how the first is done and when the second makes more sense.

How glass cooktop replacement is done

Cooktop glass replacement means lifting the hob out, moving its working parts onto a new panel and refitting it. On most hobs it takes one to two hours once the glass has arrived.

1
Identify the hob

From the rating plate: brand, model number and, where the maker uses one, the production or version code. The glass is printed, drilled and sized for one model.

2
Order the glass

Original glass for the model. If it is not in stock, it usually arrives in about two days.

3
Isolate

Power off at the breaker. Gas closed and disconnected on gas hobs.

4
Lift the hob from the worktop

The clips or brackets are released and the old seal is cut.

5
Open the hob

The base tray is separated from the glass frame.

6
Transfer the parts

Elements or induction coils, temperature sensors, the touch control board and wiring are moved to the new panel in their exact positions. On many hobs the new glass comes already bonded to its frame.

7
Check what lies beneath

Elements, limiters, boards and wiring are inspected for damage from liquid or from the event that broke the glass.

8
Check the cut-out

The opening is measured against the maker's dimensions and eased if it is tight.

9
Refit on a new seal

Seated evenly, clamped without stress.

10
Test

Every zone is run. Gas hobs are leak tested and each burner is lit.

If the cause was a fault in the hob, such as an element stuck on full, that is repaired in the same visit.

Getting the right glass

The right glass is the maker's panel for the exact model. Hob glass is not a generic sheet that can be cut to size.

Why it must be the originalDetail
MaterialGlass-ceramic rated for cooking temperatures. Ordinary toughened glass is not suitable over radiant elements
PrintingZone rings, control symbols and the touch area are printed on the underside in the right places
Touch controlsThe control board senses through the glass at marked positions. Different glass, different thickness or coating, and the keys misread
Cut-outs and holesGas-on-glass panels are drilled for each burner, knob and fixing
Frame and bevelFramed, bevelled and flush-fit versions of the same hob use different panels
SizeA few millimetres out and the hob will not seat or will be stressed

Many makers buy their glass-ceramic from specialist producers. Schott Ceran is the best-known name and is often printed in a corner of the panel. That mark identifies the material, not the part: a replacement is still ordered by the hob's brand and model.

What to send us

A photo of the rating plate. It is under the hob, inside the oven door frame on a range, or in the instruction booklet.
A photo of the whole hob from above.
A close photo of the damage.
Whether the hob is ceramic, induction or gas.

Gas-on-glass hobs

A gas-on-glass hob has gas burners mounted through a glass panel. The glass on these is usually toughened, and it fails differently from the glass-ceramic of an electric hob.

ProblemCauseOutcome
Panel shattered into small piecesToughened glass releasing its stress after an impact, an edge chip or overheatingNew panel. Check the burners and valves for fragments
Crack near a burnerOversized pan or a griddle reflecting heat down onto the glass, or a burner cap misplaced so the flame plays on the panelNew panel. Correct the cause
Crack from a fixing or a burner holeOver-tightened fixing or uneven seatingNew panel, fitted with even pressure
Glass discoloured around a burnerFlame too large for the pan, or lazy yellow flamesClean and adjust the burner
Use pans no larger than the maker recommends for each burner.
Do not use a flat griddle or a heat diffuser that covers two burners unless the manual allows it.
Seat the burner caps properly, so the flame goes up and out and not down.
Do not use the hob as a worktop.

Replacement involves disconnecting the gas, transferring every burner, valve seal and igniter to the new panel and leak testing the hob afterwards. See also gas stove repair.

Glass top on a freestanding stove or range

The glass top of a freestanding electric range is replaced in the same way, with easier access. The top is hinged or lifts off after two or three screws are removed at the front.

The elements hang from the underside of the glass on brackets and are transferred one by one.
The control panel at the back or front is usually separate from the glass.
Ranges from Whirlpool, Samsung, Frigidaire, GE, LG and KitchenAid each use their own top, ordered by the model on the plate inside the oven door or the storage drawer.
If a burner on a glass-top stove is not working and the glass is intact, the fault is the element or its switch, not the glass. See electric stove repair.

What a crack can damage underneath

The glass is a lid over the hob's working parts. Once it is cracked, whatever is spilled goes through, and the damage beneath can cost more than the glass.

Part beneathWhat liquid or the breakage does to itWhat we check
Radiant elementsThe insulating base soaks up liquid and the element shorts or trips the breakerInsulation resistance of each element
Temperature limitersThe glass rod of a limiter is fragile and can be broken by the same impactEach limiter for continuity and for a cracked rod
Induction power and control boardsLiquid tracks across the board and corrodes or shorts itBoards for residue, corrosion and burn marks
Induction coils and their sensorsSensors bonded under the glass can be torn off when the panel breaksEach sensor and its wiring
Touch control boardPressed against the underside of the glass. Easily cracked or wettedDisplay and every key
Gas burners and valves, on gas-on-glassFragments of toughened glass fall into the burner bases and valve areaEach burner cleared and each joint leak tested
Wiring and terminal blockLiquid collects in the base trayTray dried and connections inspected

This is the practical reason not to carry on cooking on the undamaged zones. A hob that only needed glass on the day it cracked can need glass and a control board a week later.

Worktop cut-outs and why edge cracks come back

A crack that starts at the edge of the glass with no impact mark is caused by the hob being squeezed or twisted in its opening. Fitting new glass into the same opening gives the same crack again, sometimes within weeks.

The cut-out should match the maker's dimensions, which leave a few millimetres of clearance all round. A hob should drop in under its own weight, never be pressed in.
Wood and laminate worktops swell when water gets into the cut edge. A cut-out that was correct when new can tighten over the years.
Stone and quartz worktops do not swell, and they do not give either. A corner of the cut-out that is slightly out of square puts a point load on the glass.
Fixing clips tightened unevenly bend the frame.
A hob bedded on hard silicone all round, where the maker specifies its own soft seal, cannot move as it heats.
An oven beneath that has dropped or been refitted can push up on the hob's base.

When we replace glass that cracked from the edge, the cut-out is measured and eased before the hob goes back, the cut edge of a timber worktop is sealed, and the hob is fitted on the maker's seal with the clips tightened evenly.

Warranty, insurance and rented homes

Who pays for a cracked hob is a common question, and the answer depends on how it broke and whose hob it is.

SituationWhat usually applies
Hob under the maker's warranty, cracked by an impactMakers generally treat impact damage as outside the warranty, so the repair is chargeable
Hob under warranty, cracked with no impactWorth raising with the maker or the retailer first. They will want to see the crack pattern and the installation
Home contents insurance with accidental damage coverSome policies cover fixed glass and hobs. Check your policy wording
Rented homeCheck your tenancy contract and speak to your landlord or the property manager before arranging a repair
New kitchen, crack appeared soon after installationOften an installation fault, such as a tight cut-out. Raise it with the installer

We provide a written quotation and a description of the damage and its likely cause, which is what a landlord or an insurer normally asks for.

What cooktop glass replacement costs, and when to replace the hob

The cost of glass replacement is mostly the price of the glass, and that varies widely with the brand, the size and whether the hob is ceramic, induction or gas.

What raises the costWhat lowers it
Premium brandsCommon mid-range models
Wide hobs, 80 or 90 cmStandard 60 cm hobs and two-zone dominos
Induction with full-width touch slidersCeramic or knob-controlled hobs
Bevelled, framed or flush-fit glassPlain frameless panels
Damage beneath: a board or coil wetted through the crackGlass only
Worktop work to ease a tight cut-outA correct cut-out
SituationUsual decision
Mid-range or premium hob under about eight years old, nothing else damagedReplace the glass
Built-in hob that matches other appliances in the kitchenReplace the glass
Basic hob where the glass costs most of the price of a new oneReplace the hob
Old hob with glass no longer suppliedReplace the hob
Glass broken and a power board or elements damaged as wellUsually replace the hob
Freestanding range in good conditionReplace the glass top

We give you the price of the glass fitted and tell you plainly when a new hob is the better buy. If you choose a new hob, we can fit it, and a same-size replacement usually drops into the existing cut-out. The diagnostic visit is AED 100 plus VAT.

Scratched glass stovetop: what can be removed

Most marks on a scratched or stained glass hob are deposits sitting on the surface, and those come off. Scratches are cuts in the surface, and those do not.

1
Let the hob cool completely

Except for sugar spills, which are lifted while still hot with a scraper.

2
Scrape

Hold a hob scraper with a new blade almost flat and push burnt residue off.

3
Apply ceramic hob cleaner

A small amount, worked in with a soft cloth or paper towel.

4
Buff dry

With a clean cloth.

5
For metal marks

Repeat with the cleaner. They sit on the glass and lift with patience.

6
For white mineral rings

Wipe with a little white vinegar on a cold hob, then clean as above.

Do not use scouring pads, steel wool, oven cleaner or abrasive powders.
Do not use a dishcloth that has been used for other cleaning. Grit in it scratches.
Scratches can be made less noticeable with regular use of hob cleaner, which fills them slightly. They cannot be polished out without leaving a dull patch.
Scratches do not affect how the hob cooks.

Preventing cracks

Most cracked hobs were broken by something falling on them or by a pan that boiled dry. A few habits prevent both.

Do not store jars, bottles or heavy items in the cupboard directly above the hob.
Lift pans on and off. Do not slide or drop them.
Use pans with flat, clean bases no larger than the zone. Keep cast iron especially clean underneath.
Never leave an empty pan on a hot zone.
Do not put hot lids face down on the glass. They can seal to it as they cool.
Clean sugar spills at once.
Do not stand on the hob to reach a cupboard, and do not use it as a chopping surface or a shelf.
Do not pour cold water onto hot glass.
If the worktop has swollen or shifted around the hob, have the cut-out checked.

A hob protector mat can be used on induction hobs where the maker allows it. Do not use one on a ceramic radiant hob, which heats the glass directly.

What happens at the visit

Glass replacement is normally two visits: one to identify and assess, one to fit.

1
First visit

The hob is isolated and made safe, identified from its plate, and checked beneath for liquid or heat damage. You are given a fixed price for the glass and fitting, and the price of a new hob for comparison where that is sensible.

2
Order

The glass is ordered on your approval. About two days where it is not in stock.

3
Second visit

The hob is lifted, rebuilt on the new glass, sealed back into the worktop and tested on every zone or burner.

If you have the model number and clear photos, send them when you book. The more certain the model, the sooner the right glass can be found.

We cover all of Dubai, including Dubai Marina, JBR, Palm Jumeirah, JLT, Downtown, Business Bay, Jumeirah, Al Barsha, Dubai Hills and Deira.
