Kenwood washing machines have been sold in different markets by different makers under the same name, so two Kenwood machines can be quite unlike each other inside. The model number on the label, inside the door or on the back panel, tells us which you have. Send a photo of it when you book.

A Kenwood washing machine service centre visit from us follows a fixed order: test, diagnose, quote, repair, test again, invoice.

Kenwood washing machine not working: checks in order

A Kenwood washing machine not working can often be narrowed down in a few minutes. Make these checks in order before you call.

1
Supply

Plug a lamp or kettle into the same socket. Check any wall switch for the socket, the plug fuse and the breaker.

2
Power button

Press it firmly, or turn the dial from Off to a programme.

3
Door or lid

Close it until it clicks. No front loader will fill with the door unlatched.

4
Tap

Open it fully. Check the inlet hose is not kinked.

5
Child lock and delay

A key symbol or an hours figure on the display explains a machine that seems to ignore you.

6
Filter

On a front loader, a blocked pump filter stops the machine at the first drain.

7
Restart

Off, unplugged for five minutes, then a short programme.

After the checksLikely fault
Still completely deadMains filter, on/off switch or control board

Kenwood washing machine not spinning, including the K814WM16

A Kenwood washing machine not spinning has usually skipped the spin because of water left in the drum, an unbalanced load or foam. A Kenwood K814WM16 not spinning with an empty drum has a belt, brush or control fault.

SymptomCauseFix
Water left at the endDrain faultFilter, hose, pump

Extra rinses, slow spinFoamLess detergent
Motor sound, drum loose by handBelt broken or offNew belt

Bangs and slowsShock absorbersNew pair

The K814WM16 is an 8 kg, 1400 spin front loader. On a machine of this type and age, check the pump filter and the load first, then the belt and brushes. Brushes are a wearing part and inexpensive. Left until the motor stops, they can damage it.

Run a spin with the drum empty. If the empty drum spins fully, the drive is sound. See the not spinning guide.

Kenwood washing machine not draining

A Kenwood washing machine not draining has a blocked pump filter in most cases, and it is the first thing to check.

1
Unplug and protect the floor

A tray and towels at the bottom front.

2
Open the filter cover

And loosen the filter slowly so that the water comes out in stages.

3
Clean the filter and chamber

Coins, hair grips and lint.

4
Check the impeller

It should turn.

5
Refit tightly

Then check the drain hose for kinks and blockage at the sink connection.

6
Test

Run a drain or spin programme.

A pump that hums and shifts no water is jammed or has a damaged impeller. A silent pump has failed. We replace pumps at home in about 40 minutes. On top load and twin tub Kenwood machines, check that the drain hose lies low to the floor drain. See the not draining guide.

Kenwood washing machine door locked

A Kenwood washing machine door locked after the wash will release a minute or two after the programme ends. If it does not, there is water in the drum or the lock has failed.

Wait for the door light or symbol to go out.
If you can see water, run a spin or drain, or empty the drum at the filter.
Switch off and unplug for five minutes, then try the handle gently.
If the handle moves loosely and the door stays shut, the handle or hook is broken.
Do not lever the door. The lock is released from inside by a technician and replaced in about half an hour.

A lock that will not close has the opposite symptom: the door shuts, and the wash never begins. It is the same part. See the door locked guide.

Kenwood washing machine not starting

A Kenwood washing machine not starting with its lights on is waiting for the door lock in most cases. With no lights, the fault is the supply, the switch or the board.

SymptomCheckIf fine

See our won't start guide for the full checklist.

Kenwood washing machine leaking

A Kenwood washing machine leaking has a fault at the door seal, the filter cap, the detergent drawer, a hose or the pump.

Feel round the door seal's fold for a coin or wire, and wipe it clean. Reseat the filter. If water still appears, close the tap, unplug and call. See the leaking guide.

Kenwood washing machine dryer not working

When the dryer side of a Kenwood washer dryer is not working, the machine washes and spins normally and the laundry comes out wet or only warm. The fault is in the drying circuit, which has its own heater, fan, thermostats and air duct.

SymptomCauseRepair
Drum turns, air coldDrying heater failed, or safety thermostat trippedHeater, or reset and find the cause
Warm, takes hoursFluff blocking the condenser and fan housingStrip and clean
No fan soundFan motor seizedFan motor
Drying will not startToo much laundry sensed, or the door lock not confirming for dryingReduce load. Lock if needed
Stops earlyDrying sensor or thermostatSensor
Damp cabinet, long dryingCold tap closed on models that condense with waterOpen the tap

Why drying faults build up slowly

Every drying programme carries fluff from the laundry into the air path. Unlike a separate tumble dryer, a washer dryer has no fluff filter you can empty. The fluff collects on the condenser and the fan until the air can no longer circulate. Drying times creep up, then the heater overheats and its safety thermostat cuts it out. Cleaning the duct restores the machine, and it is the most frequent washer dryer job we do.

Dry half loads. The drying capacity on the label is lower than the washing capacity. See washer dryer repair.

Noise and bearings

A Kenwood that has become loud on the spin is telling you which part is worn.

SoundWhenCause
Roar that climbs with speedSpinDrum bearings
BangingStart of spinShock absorbers, or an uneven load
RattleWashObject in the tub
Grinding low downDrainObject in the pump
SquealStart of spinBelt

Bearings are the major repair. On some models they can be replaced on their own. On others the tub is sealed and a tub assembly is fitted. We confirm which before quoting, and on a low-priced machine we compare the cost with a new washer. See the noise guide.

Kenwood top load and twin tub machines

Kenwood top loaders and twin tubs have the simple, mechanical faults of their type.

TypeSymptomCause
Top loadWill not spinLid switch, drain not complete, clutch
Top loadHums, no movementCapacitor or belt
Top loadTub fullHose raised, drain valve, drain motor
Top loadOverfillsLevel sensor tube or inlet valve
Twin tubWash side deadTimer or capacitor
Twin tubSpinner deadLid switch or spin timer
Twin tubSpinner slow to stopBrake

All of these are home repairs with inexpensive parts.

Heating faults and long programmes

A Kenwood front loader whose programmes overrun and whose laundry comes out cold has a heating fault.

Heating element. no heat, or a breaker that trips a few minutes into the wash.
Temperature sensor. stops or prevents heating.
Board relay. checked last.

The element is replaced in under an hour. If the breaker trips, leave the machine unplugged until it has been tested.

Kenwood control board faults

A Kenwood that is dead with a good supply, freezes, or never switches on one function has a board fault.

Power supply section. dead or flickering.
Motor triac. damaged when brushes are run to the end.
Relays. heater or motor direction.
Moisture. from a leaking drawer hose above the board.

We repair boards at component level in our workshop where possible, with the machine left at your home, and fit a replacement where one is available for the model. Because Kenwood machines come from more than one maker, board availability varies, and we tell you after the diagnostic.

Installation and care

We install Kenwood washing machines and washer dryers.

1
Transit bolts out

All of them, with the plugs fitted.

2
Level and lock the feet

No rocking.

3
Inlet hose

With its filter washer, tap fully open.

4
Drain hose

At the correct height, loose in the standpipe.

5
Test wash

Checking joints and the spin.

Care

Clean the pump filter every month or two.
Run a hot empty wash monthly.
Wash the drawer and wipe the door seal.
Leave the door ajar.
On a washer dryer, dry half loads and have the duct cleaned when drying times lengthen.

Kenwood repair cost, and repair or replace

Kenwood washing machine repair in Dubai typically costs AED 150 to AED 400 at market rates for a pump, door lock, belt, brushes, seal or heater, and AED 400 to AED 900 for a board, motor, bearings or drying system work. Our diagnostic visit is AED 100 plus VAT.

Kenwood washers are mid-priced. Small and medium repairs are worth doing. For bearings or a board on an older machine, we show you the repair cost beside the price of a replacement.

We cover all of Dubai, including Dubai Marina, JBR, Palm Jumeirah, JLT, Downtown, Business Bay, Jumeirah, Al Barsha, Dubai Hills and Deira. For other makes see washing machine repair.

Detergent, foam and the faults they cause

More washing machine faults come from detergent than from any single part, and a Kenwood is no exception. Too much, the wrong kind, or the right kind in the wrong place each causes its own trouble.

MistakeWhat it causesRemedy
Too much detergentFoam at the door and drawer, extra rinses, failed spins, leaksUse the dose for the load size and soil, at the lower end
Hand-wash or dish detergent in the machineA drum full of foam and a machine that stopsRun rinse programmes until clear. Never repeat
Liquid in the drawer on a delayed startIt runs into the drum early and is wastedUse powder for delayed starts, or a dosing ball
Damp powderCaked drawer, blocked jets, powder left behindStore powder dry. Clean the drawer
Only cool, short programmesGrease and film build up inside, smell, grey marksOne hot wash a week
Softener above the MAX markIt siphons away before the final rinseFill to the mark

If the drum is full of foam now, do not open the door. Select a rinse or drain programme and repeat it until the foam has gone.

Smells and hygiene

A Kenwood that smells musty, or leaves a smell on clean laundry, has a film of detergent residue and bacteria in the places that stay wet: the door seal, the drawer recess, the sump and the outside of the drum.

1
Clean the door seal

Wipe out the fold and clear its drain holes.

2
Clean the drawer and its recess

Remove the drawer and scrub both.

3
Clean the pump filter

Stagnant water sits here.

4
Run the hottest programme empty

With a washing machine cleaner, or as the manual advises.

5
Repeat monthly

And leave the door and drawer ajar between washes.

A smell of drains, as opposed to mustiness, comes from the plumbing. If the drain hose is pushed into a standpipe without a trap, or joined to a sink waste after the trap, sewer air travels back into the drum. The hose connection is corrected, and the smell stops.

Electrical faults: tripping, dead sockets and surges

Some of what looks like a Kenwood fault is an electrical problem around the machine.

SymptomLikely causeAction
Breaker trips as soon as the washer is plugged inMains filter, or water on a connectorLeave unplugged. Book
Trips a few minutes into the washHeating element leaking to earthLeave unplugged. New element

Dead after a power cutSurge damage to the board's power supplyBoard repair
Works on one socket, not anotherThe socketElectrician

Run the washer from a wall socket of its own. An extension lead shared with a dryer or a heater overheats, drops the voltage and shortens the life of the control board. In buildings with frequent supply interruptions, a surge-protected socket is a sensible precaution.

Hoses: the cheapest flood prevention

The inlet and drain hoses are the simplest parts of the machine and the cause of the worst floods.

Inlet hose. under mains pressure whenever the tap is open. Rubber hoses harden, crack at the crimped ends and can burst. Replace any hose that is stiff, bulged or more than about eight years old.
Hose washers. a missing or flattened washer drips at the tap or the machine. They cost almost nothing.
Drain hose. splits where it is kinked or rubs on the cabinet. Check its length for wet patches.
Standpipe. the hose end should be loose in it, not taped, and held by its hook so that it cannot jump out.
Tap. close it when you go away for more than a day or two.

We check both hoses at every repair visit and replace them on request.

Stacked, boxed-in and raised installations

How and where a Kenwood is installed affects how it behaves on the spin.

InstallationTypical problemWhat helps
Dryer stacked on the washerVibration passed to the dryer, items shaken off the topA proper stacking kit, and a level, firm base
Under a worktop with little clearanceCabinet knocking the worktop or side panelsCheck the gaps, level, and fit the lock nuts
On a raised plinth or drawer baseMovement magnifiedA plinth made for the machine, fixed to the floor
On a suspended or springy floorWalking, imbalance stopsMove over a joist line or onto a board that spreads the load
In a cupboard with the door shutHeat and damp, mould, short board lifeLeave the cupboard open while it runs and after

If a machine that used to be steady has started to move after being pushed back from cleaning, its feet have probably shifted. Re-level it before suspecting the shock absorbers.

What to tell us when you book

A few details at the booking stage let the technician bring the right part and finish in one visit.

The model number from the label.
The type. front loader, washer dryer, top loader or twin tub.
What the display or lights show.
The stage at which the machine stops. fill, wash, drain, spin or dry.
Whether the door is locked with laundry inside.
Whether there is water in the drum or on the floor.
Anything that changed just before the fault. a move, a power cut, a new detergent, a plumbing job.

A photo of the label and a short video of the fault, sent on WhatsApp, cover most of this.

Belts, brushes and the drive on a Kenwood front loader

The drum of a Kenwood front loader is turned by a motor at the bottom of the tub through a ribbed belt to a large pulley on the back of the drum. Two parts in that chain wear.

PartSign of wearWhat happens if ignored
BeltSqueal at spin start, rubber dust under the machine, drum loose by handIt snaps or comes off, and the drum stops
Carbon brushes, on brushed motorsSpin gets weaker over weeks, crackling, a hot smellBrush holders score the motor and the motor is lost
Motor speed sensorDrum races or jerksProgramme stops with a motor fault
Drum pulleyWobble, belt coming off repeatedlyUsually a sign of bearing wear behind it

With the back panel off, both the belt and the brushes can be inspected in a few minutes. We check the two together, because a machine old enough to need one is usually close to needing the other.

The door seal on a Kenwood

The grey rubber seal around the door opening keeps the water in and is the commonest source of a leak at the front.

Check the fold for coins, hair grips and underwires after every wash of items that carry them.
Wipe the fold dry after the last wash of the day and leave the door ajar.
Small splits at the bottom of the seal, where water sits, are the usual damage. A split seal is replaced, not patched.
A seal that has slipped off the front panel has lost its outer wire band. It is refitted in minutes.
Black mould that has gone into the rubber will not clean out. If it is extensive, replace the seal.

Replacement takes 45 minutes to an hour at home, followed by a test wash.
