A front loader skips the spin when water remains, when one heavy item cannot be balanced, or when foam is detected. Clear the filter, mix the load and use less detergent. If the empty drum will not spin on the spin programme, the belt or the motor drive has a fault. Shock absorbers, suspension and a machine that will not stay still
A TCL that moves, bangs or repeatedly stops for imbalance has a problem with its support, its floor or its load.
Front load
The tub hangs from springs and is steadied by shock absorbers fixed to the base. When the shock absorbers wear, the tub swings wide as the spin builds, and the control cuts the speed. Test them by pressing down on the inner drum's lip and letting go. It should return and stop. More than one bounce means wear. They are replaced as a pair.
Top load
The tub hangs on four rods with dampers at their lower ends. Press the empty tub down and release it. If it bounces, the rods are worn and are replaced as a set of four.
Before blaming a part
When the wash itself is poor
Not every problem is a breakdown. A machine that runs through its programme and delivers poor results usually has a cause that can be found.
If results have changed without any change in detergent or habits, the machine may be heating poorly or filling short, and both are worth a check.
Signs that mean stop using the machine
Most faults can wait a day for a visit. A few should stop you using the machine at once.
For any of these, switch off at the wall, pull the plug, close the tap, and call. We treat them as urgent.

No water, slow filling and inlet faults
A TCL that stops soon after starting, or takes a very long time to fill, has too little water reaching it. The cause is usually outside the machine.
A half-open tap is the commonest cause on a newly installed machine.
For a kink behind the machine or a crush under its foot.
Close the tap, unscrew the hose at the machine and rinse the small mesh screen.
Run the tap into a bucket. A weak flow at certain hours points to the building's supply.
Run a short programme.
If the supply is good and the screen is clean, the inlet valve has failed or is not being powered. A valve that hums and passes a trickle is worn. One that lets water through with the machine switched off is stuck open, and the tap should be kept closed until it is replaced.
A machine that fills and empties at the same time is siphoning through its drain hose, not short of water. Raise the hose end to the height in the manual and leave it loose in the standpipe.
Connected features, child lock and other settings
Modern TCL machines have settings that can make a healthy machine look faulty.
If the app cannot find the washer, check that the phone is on the 2.4 GHz band of the router during pairing and that the machine is in pairing mode. The washer's own controls work regardless of the network.
